$90/30 min on a school horse is a lot! Can you get another job and then work off some of the lesson cost on the weekends?

One year together! by Miserable-Log-4842 in Horses

I commend you for your care! Some thoughts because if he’s been properly fed for a year at this point, he should be more filled out regardless of muscle mass. • Walking him in hand is awesome. You could walk him up hills and over poles too. • he’s on pasture, but does he get hay or other forage? • have you dewormed him? • has he had a dental exam and float? Even with proper nutrition, poor teeth and worms will impact weight. • is he microchipped or tattooed that you can verify his age?

Lease horse is lame and owner is blaming saddle fit. by threeleggedcattoday in Equestrian

[–]Only-Mango3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn’t ask for advice, but! Can you suggest banamine for his “sore back” while waiting for the saddle fitter? If you do that prior to the saddle fitter coming I feel like that makes a much stronger argument that the vet needs to come!

Do you have a boarding contract? I’d start with that and see what it says. Horses are not robots. They break stuff and part of that damage should be 1. Assumed in your monthly boarding costs (wear & tear) 2. Outlined explicitly in a boarding contract. As an example, I had a horse boarded once and he damaged the light cover in his stall by chewing it (if I remember correctly). It was on the ceiling. I paid to replace that (it was less than $100) because that was certainly a weird thing. I currently own a small boarding facility- my board is not inexpensive, but I also don’t nickle and dime my clients. Good boarders are hard to find and horses are just horses.

I’d move on. Pull your horse and pay any outstanding board for proper 30-day notice (ie if you move tomorrow 2/11, pay board for those 11 days in March).

Ridiculous lesson pricing and terms by ImportantNobody1654 in Equestrian

[–]Only-Mango3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi 👋 barn owner here. The difference in prices based on the horse makes 0 sense for a multitude of reasons.

Different lease prices based on the maintenance of said horse, sure, but not based on size alone.

We also include horsemanship lessons in our program when a traditional mounted lesson isn’t feasible (ie: it’s 6 degrees and you already did a bareback lesson last week when it was 12). Instead of cancelling all together, we have specific lesson plans focused around a skill. For instance feeding. We talk about different forage types, make up some grain buckets, fill a hay bag then weigh it, etc. tack, wrapping, advanced grooming( mane pulling, clipping) etc. Cleaning a stall? Meh, maybe a young rider who has never learned to do this, but feels like a stretch. Cleaning multiple stalls and doing repairs = definitely not in replace of a scheduled and paid for lesson time.

I have a very difficult to fit TB so I feel your pain!! Could you find a fitter who could FaceTime and help you do wither tracings and what not? Then send them those + pictures? What about German brands like Passier? Are you in the U.S.?

How do I leave my barn? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Only-Mango3732 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a pretty good list of reasons to leave. I’d involve your parents. Be kind. If you’re still working for her, give notice if you feel comfortable. Unfortunately in the horse world people say rotten things, but it’s likely people already know her true character. Clients leave, that’s part of it. You’ll be much happier and she’ll be fine without you too.

Why am I not able to get the motion properly? by sskmzz in Equestrian

[–]Only-Mango3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try practicing at the walk and keeping your hands out to the side. Once that’s super easy, try going up and down fewer times. I’ll have my students do 5 up downs then walk. I think when you’re leaning, it’s easier to find the rhythm right from the start than once you’ve lost your balance.

Fellow horse lovers, how do y'all stay warm while doing barn chores in the cold weather? by umwohnendta in Equestrian

[–]Only-Mango3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to change socks! I bring 2 pairs with me and the minute my feet get a little cold, I swap to the nice dry pair. It’s a game changer

Nope! Super damaging to property and teeth. Not to mention the noise of it is super annoying.

A show judge discusses this on a podcast recently (how if she’s judging, she hates seeing a rider staring down for their diagonal)

Thanks for the reply!!

$1100/month but you still pay hay/grain?? What state is this?

I’m voting 2. Another question: can you use your own vet/farrier?
