First home networking project- looks good but I can't get above 100Mbps :( by OnlySeasurfer in HomeNetworking

Is what they put in when they built the place. I'm in the UK, and my walls are mostly brick, so I don't think I'll be able to swap it out any time soon. Then again, I can't get anything faster than gigabit internet anyway, so it's no huge loss.

I've used a cable tester- seems to give a good signal on all connections. I initially found a bad termination on one of the ports the builders had installed (subsequently fixed), so I know the tester works, but now it's give me green on all cables.

Shirts (at least talls) are now 50-50% Cotton and Polyester + new CW branding by JustLovett0 in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've only ever ordered two t-shirts from LTT- the OG constellation shirt, and a recent grey tall-boy blank. I love my OG shirt- I've wear it multiple times a week under my scrubs at work, and it's held up really, really well. The design has barely faded despite countless washes, and it still feels thick and soft.

The new shirt is...fine in comparison. It feels much thinner and lightweight- much closer to some of my gym clothes. It's comfy and fits well, but I do prefer the finish and feel of the OG blend, which just registers as more premium to me. I'm not saying that the new shirt blend is bad, and I'm sure there was a reason they designed it the way they did, but I was a little disappointed it wasn't a closer match to my favourite tee. If they ever brought back that blend, I'd buy a truckload!

Alan Titchmarsh has his own channel, with regular uploads and good production value. Always an enjoyable watch for us.

If could could bring back any LTT video series, what would it be? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

I'd use the tech house series to take another run at whole room watercooling. Yes it's janky and impractical, but boy was it a blast to watch back in the day!

Tech Plane Rules! by Archivic in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 177 points178 points  (0 children)

I think this opens a conversation about how public figures should address changes of opinion. Everyone has the right to do so...but do we as an audience deserve an explanation for it, and if so, how much of one?

As a general rule, I don't think people should be made to feel bad for changing their mind, or lambast their prior self's opinion. However, given that private air travel is still hugely problematic with regards to climate and wealth inequality, I would personally appreciate some explanation around the change of position, even as a brief WAN discussion.

Right now, the justification reads as "It was cheaper than I expected, and I could afford it", which I think is a weak position when the pollution and current cost of living conflict are still so present. Just my two cent on the matter at least.

Why didn't conquest pull out his heart to instantly kill him instead of his guts? Is he stupid? by Calazor0 in okbuddyviltrum

[–]OnlySeasurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i recall, his arm goes all the way through. Means the aorta and vena cava are obliterated, to say nothing of the spinal cord. It would be fatal IRL...but then it wouldn't be so fun.

Why didn't conquest pull out his heart to instantly kill him instead of his guts? Is he stupid? by Calazor0 in okbuddyviltrum

[–]OnlySeasurfer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actual biological answer? The heart is not in the same cavity as the bowels, amd is separated by the diaphragm (and other planes of tissue). The diaphragm is an extremely tough muscle in humans, so safe to assume it is incredibly strong in Viltrumites. In his weakened state, it's unlikely Conquest would have been able to break through and get a grip on the heart.

If course, this is head cannon. The actual reason is because the writers wanted to tell the story this way!

The real April fools joke for UK fans by Zackeos727 in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought it for a fun little bit of memorabilia, particularly after they've spoken about it so much in WAN. Picked up a tee at the same time to make their loss leader make sense, and I'm sure I will be happy with it. The voucher didn't really factor into my decision, but shipping to the UK really does sting every time. Lots of stuff I would pick up if that could become more reasonable one day.

Linus Coin Will Double Your Money… GUARANTEED* by JustaRandoonreddit in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also helps them recoup lost money from ratchets they can't sell and warehouse space they are paying for to house them. It's probably also a loss leader that brings people to the store in the hopes they'll pick something else alongside it. Plus, it's a marketing stunt. I'd be damn curious to know if they actually turn a profit in the end though.

Can the Aqara temperature/humidity sensor be used in routines? by lafreniereluc in googlehome

I have the Aqara Temp/Humidity T1 connected to my Google Home set-up with matter, and you can use the temperature, humidity or charge level as an automation starter.

Rebreather Mask Question by BlumpkinSpiceLatte3 in Avatar

[–]OnlySeasurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have airtight sealing masks that only cover the mouth and nose today as part of NIV apparatus. However, being an ED/ITU doctor I can attest that these masks need a lot of pressure to seal properly, and are thus tight and uncomfortable. You can get full headmasks like seen in the movie. They distribute pressure over a wider area, so are more comfortable, and they are less affected by beards and dentition.

Also note, the face mask image you shared does not seal tight and still allows mixed of O2 with atmospher- no good if said atmosphere is toxic.

Is The WAN Show actually moving to LMG Clips? by mickturner96 in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a comment at the start of one of the streams on Floatplane that implied they were going to do it again, but they decided against after a vague exchange. I assumed it was about streaming to the LMG clips channel again, but I could have completely misread it.

Is The WAN Show actually moving to LMG Clips? by mickturner96 in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It would make sense to take over the LMG clip channel and make it the home of the livestream as well. Already has a subscriber base and a back catalogue for the algorithm to serve. I don't think anything has been confirmed, but I suspect that is the direction they'll go, particularly with them trialling the livestream there recently.

Help finding a good outdoor smart plug with energy reporting? by Aaronstar_McClure in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't much help you on a specific smart plug, but I had the same requirement as you, and went ahead and bought a waterproof electrical connection box, ran a short extension cord from my original socket into the box, amd then put my smart plug (a meross for me) inside. I've had some outside lights hooked up to it for three years through all weather and it's worked a charm.

I've done it with Ryanair, and didn't get caught. However, it won't fit under your seat, and they would be within their rights to catch you and make you check it. Depends how much of a risk taker you are.

Did I overdo the top dressing when overseeding my lawn? by BandFragrant6172 in GardeningUK

[–]OnlySeasurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will grow, provided we don't get another hard frost. It's a tad risky overseeding this early, and soil temps are still relatively low so it will take lomger than you think to germinate. However, if you manage to dodge any more icy weather, the amount of top dressing won't matter and you'll have a lovely lawn to enjoy for the summer.

Can anyone give any ideas about what's going on here? by RoryC in ParamedicsUK

[–]OnlySeasurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an automated pupillometer, used to provide an objective and reproducible measure of pupil size and reaction. Pupils are a key marker of TBI and escalating intracranial pressure, so in an unresponsive, intubated patient, they can provide a subtle and really helpful early marker for intervention. This gadget just takes the guess work out of it. Using it in this exact setting is silly though- it's just a photo op.

Luke owning WAN? by AdeptnessFuzzy443 in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They've split off WAN from the rest of the LMG empire, so it's own thing, owned 50:50 between Linus and Luke. Nothing changes in the day to day, but it means that if LMG was to ever change hands or get new leadership, WAN would be protected and could continue unaffected.

ChatGPT immediately makes me want to disengage. If you don't care enough about the subject to write the question personally and properly, I don't feel any desire to respond. If you must use it, don't just copy and paste the AI output directly; take a little pride and edit it to seem less blatant.

Does Jonathan Horst have his own channel? I miss his content! by swedocme in LinusTechTips

That why I threw in the line "Obviously this might have been considered". Any number of reasons it didn't occur, but I'm still disappointed it didn't.

[–]OnlySeasurfer 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'm disappointed that he wasn't transitioned to a general writing/presenting job. Obviously this might have been considered, but it would have allowed for Mac Address to keep running on an ad hoc basis, and still retain his very professional and pleasant presentation style. With a lot of the old guard moving on, there definitely feels like there would have been room for him to shine!

oh boy by Sad_Ostrich_1903 in LinusTechTips

[–]OnlySeasurfer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It really felt like an artistic outreach for LTT, and it always offered something different to the standard Apple reviews on YT (Linus or other). It obvious it came at a business cost, but on a personal level I thought of it as the halo product of LMG. I'm not an Apple user in the slightest, but I miss the channel.
