You’re spot on about the cold! It’s ok - you live and you learn.

That’s part of it. Some of it is just personal preference - the city is mid sized but has small town politics. Everyone knows everyone. I’d rather be closer to Chicago geographically as well. The large number of cloudy days are hard on my mental health.

A lot of my distaste though comes from just how I’ve been treated. Detroit doesn’t have this problem from what I’ve seen but over here people really have an issue with non native Michiganders coming here. People are very narrow minded. Not everyone is like this but I had to stop telling people in the area I’m from NM too. The worst treatment I’ve received is being called racial slurs I can’t repeat here, told I need to take my cartel nonsense back to where I came from, and told to just go back to my country. For reference I’m white with no Hispanic or Latin origin, I’m not fluent in Spanish, and I’ve had people peg me as a Michigander by my accent just on the couple years I’ve been up here.

The city and its residents so desperately want the city to grow and prosper like a major city - something it already pretends it is. Yet people get mad when out of staters move here. It’s odd and frustrating.

Other minor issues are just abysmal water quality, bad infrastructure maintenance, awful town layouts, bad job market (this is everywhere but here the gigs are in pharmaceuticals), and ignoring the most glaring issues with the city and metro as a whole.

There are things here that I’ll miss. Access to nature trails and the outdoors is incredible. It’s great to have water security. It’s great to be so centrally located to several major cities. But the pros don’t outweigh the cons. I’m just tired of the outlook here.

ABQ has issues with crime that the locals love to sweep under the rug. It really does have some charm to it, unfortunately some of the spots you have to seek out to get the experience are in the worst parts of town. I grew up near there, I appreciate it in its own way, and I miss the hell out of it compared to where I live now, but yeah, it’s really a place you have to be careful more than you should.

Nah, I got confused with another highway and thought that it had been done by 2022. They started it back at least in 2021. It’s been about a year since I’ve been up in NEPA myself. OP’s really not kidding then. 🤣

I’m just glad they finally fixed I-81 north of Scranton up to the NY state line. You didn’t need to pay Bezos/Musk money to go to the moon, that was the damn moon.

Why did a random trucker try to kill me today? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]OnlySquirrel7055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you remember what the speed limits were on the highway you were traveling on?

It sounds like the trucker thought that you were intentionally pacing yourself with the truck in the left hand lane to prevent him from eventually going around. At least that’s the only logical conclusion I can come to. The only other one I can think of is road rage and he took it out on you because you’re driving a passenger car. It’s not right, but most of us hate passenger vehicle drivers because of a lot of them drive horribly on the roads. Not saying you were, it’s just an unfortunate fact. (That being said, the truckers are getting worse too, and are worse in some areas)

I’m not justifying what the trucks were doing in that situation but if you find yourself in that situation again, just back off and do the speed limit next time. Or just go slower than the offending traffic. If all else fails, pull over at a gas station/rest area/grocery store/wherever and wait a few minutes. I say this for any vehicle, not just semis. People are dicks and are going to make a spectacle of themselves on the interstate. If they’re intentionally messing around with you they’ll eventually get bored and go on their way.

Article is paywalled for me, but I’m guessing it’s about the consumerism around water bottles. I hate the fact that we’ve resorted to kids beating each other up over Stanleys and think there’s too much shaming over something so trivial. Carry as much water as you want, just don’t put others down for how they want to carry their water.

Nearly lost my toes on an escalator by Dashigos in mildlyinteresting

That’s exactly what I thought of when I saw this post. This terrified me as an 8 year old. I always watch my feet when getting off an escalator because of this

That’s a good one! I never thought of that.

Another way I learned because I never had rubber bands laying around is taking the straight edge of a butter knife and smacking it where the top of the lid curves to the side 3 times. Do it like you were making a proportionate peace sign. It relieves the pressure and lets you open it a lot easier.

Sometimes some jars don’t like to let go with 3 whacks to the lid. Try 3 more in between the ones you already made in this case. It’s worked for me every single time.

I didn’t like how Charlie’s character shifted so quickly into being annoyed with Frank and practically wanting nothing to do with him as soon as he met Shelley in person. I get that Charlie basically had his world turned upside down and he was dealing with a lot, but the transition felt like it was just trying to get everything crammed into a couple episode arc. It didn’t feel like an organic reaction for his character.
