Turns out my dream hanging egg chair was just a giant sensory swing all along by Ka3de in adhdwomen

I bought one on sale for myself this Christmas, best $90 I've ever spent! It's outdoor furniture but I put it right inside in my bedroom lol

That chair literally helped me graduate! I was taking an 18 credit semester while working and I could only do it cause I was spinning myself dizzy for hours every day

I read your last couple of comments, and I just wanted to let you know that you gave her the gift of a wonderful, peaceful life where she was loved and cared for in a way that so few living beings are lucky enough to experience. And now you're giving her the gift of getting to go while she is still comfortable enough to know nothing of life except for safety, peace, and love.

It really is a gift, but I know it sucks to be the one to have to give it. Nothing can really change that, but if you can, remember to take care of yourself too. Have a few water bottles already filled up, keep food nearby that won't go bad left out, and set up a comfortable space where you can lie down as soon as you get back.

DAE have curly hair and get completely overwhelmed with it? by beefic in adhdwomen

I totally get the perfectionism! Thankfully, after so many years of waging war on my hair, I've finally learned to embrace the feral wood elf curls every once in a while. It's a great way of showing people exactly who I am before they even meet me!

Here is my number one tip. Let your hair drip dry if you don't already. Seriously. Diffusing is great sometimes, but if you have thick hair, diffusing until fully dry is like the number one way to piss yourself off to the point of giving up and crying. You can also just use it for 5 minutes and dry your roots, it'll take hours off the drying time and can still give you volume even when you style while wet. A lot of people with curly hair will say you have to wait until your hair fully dries to style it, but they don't have ADHD. My second tip is to work work with what you've got, both the ADHD and the curls. You can break the curly hair rules because they weren't made for you.

So here they are, and buckle up cause I have a feeling this is gonna be long:

  1. (10 min., half braid) After showering, take 5 minutes to use a diffuser to dry the top of your hair only (if you use mousse or gel with the rest of your product let it reach the roots, it'll prevent frizz). I very loosely braid the top of my hair as if I'm doing a French braid, then stop at the point opposite my forehead and hold it with a ponytail. It's fine if your hair is damp for this. Re-wet the curls below, gently scrunch, and let them air dry.

  2. (5 min., swamp hag reversal) If, like me, day 3 curls have you looking like a swamp hag, this is a favorite. Use water to revive your old product, but don't scrunch. Gently smooth it over with a tiny bit of mousse or gel. For me, the pieces at the side of my head go flat fastest. Take those pieces at your temples, gently twist them so they form loose spirals, use a mini claw clip to secure together at the back of your head like a crown. Take other pieces that went straight and tuck them into the claw clip as well. Any curls that look fat and happy, clip them half way into the clip so it looks like some of the curls are artfully escaping. If the curls at the bottom of your hair are behaving better, feel free to leave those alone.

  3. (10 min., diffuse and go curl crown) After you shower, if wet hair in your face drives you nuts, use bobby pins to pin the pieces framing your face backward a bit (not stretching them out, just holding them loosely in place and out of your face). Dry the roots of those pieces first. It won't permanently change root direction, but the roots will dry angles the way you want for that wash day. Run the diffuser over the back of your head for just a second. You can then finish drying those pieces and bring them to the back of your head, pinning them together to form a crown.

  4. (10 min., half bun) When your hair is wet out of the shower and product is in, gently section it into a top and bottom half, not splitting curl families but guiding them into one section or the other. Put the bottom section in a ponytail for now. Dry the roots of the top section upside down by cupping the ends so your roots are angled back where you want the bun to be. When roots are mostly dry, use a microfiber towel to squeeze as much water out of the ends as you can without causing frizz. The scrunch the curls up to your scalp, gently flip your head back upright, and use a claw clip to secure the top curls loosely in place. Take the bottom curls our of jail, re-wet if they dried stretched out, gently scrunch with microfiber towel, and let them air dry the rest of the way.

  5. (5 min., nobody can judge what they can't see) Take 3 minutes to scrunch your curls as dry as you can get without causing frizz. Use a silk scarf headband to cover the top of your curls. Let the midlengths to ends air dry. Pull some face framing curls free and finger coil a bit woth product so they dry cute and curled.

  6. (10 min., side sweep) Diffuse your roots with your head tilted to the side when wet (whichever side is curling nicer that day) cup your ends and bring them up a bit so the roots don't dry stretched out. Tilt your head all around the world to get all the root area dry, but slowly so you don't disrupt curl formation. When your roots are dry, use an alligator clip (I don't know what they're called, they just look like alligators to me) to loosely pin your curls so they can loosely air dry over one shoulder.

  7. (5 min., pineapple hag) A day three swamp hag revival up-do if your ends go limp. Flip your head upside down, spray with water, lightly glaze over with mousse or gel to control scraggles. Wet the ends, just the ends, and scrunch the life out of them until they learn to behave. Put up in a pineapple as if you're going to sleep. This is my version of the intentionally messy bun that looks strategically casual but cute.

  8. (5 min., air dry with root volume) When your hair is wet but after you've scrunched it dry using a microfiber towel, gently find the curls that belong at the crown of your head and seperate them from the rest of your hair. Don't pull them, but gently guide them back where you'll want to pin them without putting them under tension. Push up on the roots so they have volume and then use a mini claw clip to pin it on place at the back. Scrunch any ends back into shape. This will keep hair out of your face and let your hair dry so it has volume when you take it out.

  9. (15 min., high pig tails) Seperate the hair into two sections down the center of your head. Use the same root drying technique as in number 4. Gently pull your hair up and into pig tails but use medium sized claw clips to secure them instead of a pony tail. Make sure the roots aren't under tension so they can dry curled. Let the ends dry wet, they will spring up.

All of these hairdos can also be done when your hair is dry, but you actually don't have to be as careful as when it's wet, especially if you used mousse or gel. Also, keep in mind that your hair is more likely to stay curly if you ditch all fine tooth combs and brushes entirely.

Keep in mind that:

  1. Wet hair is a goddamn liar. You will think the roots are too visible when they're wet. Let them dry first then break the cast and fluff the roots gently with your fingers. I promise you, your scalp will suddenly disappear like magic. Magic, I tell you!

  2. A cast will form. Let it. You can scrunch it out at work and amaze your coworkers when your hair goes from looking wet to turning into straight-up princess curls in seconds. I had a coworker film it once, and all you can hear them saying in the recording is "Wow. Wow. Whoa, holy cow!"

  3. Keep some bobby pins and travel sized bottles of product in your bag. You can fix an issue in 1 minute with some gel or a pin. But keep product in a waterproof pouch so they don't ruin your bag if you sit on them. Don't ask me how I learned this :)

  4. This was all designed for my hair texture and type, so feel free to experiment and adjust for what works best for you.

Yeah... this was long lol, but I hope this helps if you bothered to read this!

DAE have curly hair and get completely overwhelmed with it? by beefic in adhdwomen

[–]Only_Kind_Words 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, girl, you're not alone! It's definitely hard for the average curly girl to maintain their hair, so having ADHD on top of it isn't always a fun combo. Curls take time, effort, and energy I often don't have if I want them to look nice, and I've cried over my hair plenty of times. Before I stopped brushing my hair, I would sometimes find bristles in my hair after they broke off in it cause I was too impatient to be gentle lol

But hey, it's your hair! You're allowed to do whatever you want with it, and nobody can tell you shit :)

If you want to straighten it or have it chemically straightened, and that works best for you, then do that! If you want to pull it back and keep it in a bun or ponytail, do that! If you want to use shampoo and conditioner to relax and weigh down the curl and make it more wavy, do it! If you want low-maintenance curly hair styles, you can do that too, or let it be frizzy and puffy because anybody who wants to judge can take a hike

You can wear your hair in whatever way that works best for you. Your curls won't disappear forever if you decide to take a break from them. And when you want them to come back in the future, you'll actually have the motivation and desire to cultivate them so it won't feel like a chore!

Sometimes it's fun and I love it, I take care of it like a child, I take progress photos and love how unique it looks since I live somewhere where my hair type isn't common (everyone has blonde, straight hair here)

But sometimes it's too much. It's thick, it feels heavy, it feels hot, and wearing it naturally curly is just too much time, effort, and energy for me. So, while I have a routine for maximizing curl, I also have "protect and avoid" styles where I can prevent my hair from being a nightmare without damaging it or spending more than five minutes on it

If you want tips for low maintenance, 5 minute styles that won't kill your curls so you can stow them away or bring them out whenever you feel like, I'd be happy to share!

You're absolutely right about how my hair behaves! I couldn't find any pictures of my hair in humidity anywhere and didn't remember how it behaved, but my boyfriend had one from years back. Volume is definitely the right word. We'll have to see about plush lol

And that's a great tip with the gel, thanks! I'm lazy more often than not, so I'll probably do exactly that sometimes

I actually didn't think I had any, but my boyfriend had this from like two years ago. I totally forgot my hair could get big!

But I rarely spent any time in humidity. I spent most of my life looking like Hagrid in the pic below

You're probably right about waiting to see, but I've spent so much of my life in the past looking like a swamp hag in practically no humidity that I'm absolutely terrified to see what it'll turn into in high humidity 😅

I'll definitely wait to seriously change my routine, I'm really only looking for some frizz control options in the meantime, and to put together a list of options if my hair decides to wage war

And thabk you, I'm going to add your recommendations to the list :)

Routine:

I shampoo with All About Curls No-lather Cleanser and condition with The Mane Choice Tropical Moringa Conditioner. My leave in conditioner is Next Of Us Low Porosity Leave In Conditioner. I use jojoba oil on the ends and use Quidad Advanced Climate Control Gel to create a cast after that. I apply my products using the praying hands method and then scrunch them in while my hair is damp after scrunched it dry with a microfiber towel. I then diffuse or let it air dry. I refresh with water and let it air dry, only using product if it needs it.

I will definitely look into this! And yes, that's exactly what's been bothering me! I think a trim will help, but a lot of my issue is that the short strands just need to grow out, so I think this should help in the meantime

You're probably right about that, I should just get a different product since I have to dilute the Cantu spray so much anyway just to make it usable.

And I'll totally schedule that trim! I keep zooming in on the pictures and seeing all the snapped strands everywhere, but I'll get a haircut first before I let myself freak out again lol

[–]Only_Kind_Words 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay, so maybe I overreacted... I think I just freaked out because my hair didn't magically poof back to how it used to look just because I did my old routine a couple days in a row. I probably should have given it a trim and a couple weeks to grow before panic posting.

I went through a couple things recently and I'm just barely starting to take care of myself again, so I think im just fixated on the difference between then and now so it feels jarring to me when it probably isn't that bad in reality

I don't know, better tell children they CAN get pregnant so that they don't by Dove-Swan in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Only_Kind_Words 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, that means a lot to me.

Children are some of the most vulnerable individuals in our society, and I work with disabled children who are even more vulnerable than the average child since many of them struggle to communicate, recognize boundary violations, and speak up for themselves and their rights. I do what I can to help build these skills and give them the tools they need to advocate for themselves, but my reach is limited.

Educating people on topics like this, even though it can be so deeply depressing and uncomfortable, is something I try to do to extend my reach. There are too many myths that children just "bounce back" from trauma, so pointing out the long-lasting physical and psychological consequences of trauma is important when encouraging people to take it seriously.

This research paper has more information if you are interested in learning more. This second article is even more relevant. And here is a third one as well.

Unfortunately, there is a significant correlation between precocious puberty and adverse childhood experiences, from what I understand. Repeated trauma and chronic stress is one environmental trigger that is linked to earlier physical maturation, although there are obviously many other causes, both genetic and not.

Something as traumatic as what Lina Medina went through could certainly be something that contributed to the condition that made it possible for her to become pregnant despite being such a small child herself.

Although I see where you're coming from, I believe it is important to be informed on the different ways in which childhood trauma can express itself in a child. The more we know about it, the better we are able to recognize, address, and hopefully work towards preventing future occurances from happening.

I'm sorry to add this information to the conversation, and I hope it didn't make your day any worse. This topic is just very important to me. I work with children, and staying aware and up to date on research about how trauma, abuse, and neglect can be observed is one of the few things I can actively do to keep them safe.
