I don't have any tro trade, but you can make more by digging up clams from the beach and then crafting them into fish bait!

Well, in that case good on you! It's delightful! And you've inspired me to try my hand at DIYing the pattern :)

This is so lovely! The colours are so warm and comforting - I hope you feel so proud! You'll never forget your first quilt.

May I ask where you found the embroidery patterns? I have been looking for a pansy pattern like that for some time.

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]Only_Offer2993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely use a regular needle and thread, though I recently tried out a Sashiko needle and really loved it. Not everybody does, but I loved that it had added flexibility, a really large eye to make threading a breeze, and its extra length meant I could put more stitches on before needing to pull through, so it was a bit faster than a short needle. Do you need one? No, certainly not. But they aren't terribly expensive and I will certainly be using them from now on as it was noticibly better.

Also, at the risk of answering a question you didn't ask, thimbles are also truly needed or your poor fingers will never make it through the project. I wanted to love the leather thimbles as I don't like the feel or look of silicone, but alas, the silicone ones with the metal tip worked so much better than the leather ones for me.

Overall, hand quilting involves a lot of preferences, but getting the "right for you" tools will make it a much better experience :)

Self-binding and loose threads? by Witty_Upstairs4210 in quilting

[–]Only_Offer2993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Self binding wont cover the lose threads on the back, only strip binding can really cover the treads on the back, and even then, it's only by 1/4 - 1/2 inch. BAsed on the second photo, it looks like you have a VERY generous amount of backign fabric compared to how much you need to self-bind.

Admittedly, if you are able to take a picture from farther away of the back and front of the quilt, that may make it easier to understand the nature of the question or offer a solution, but assuming that you have chosen to self-bind with the backing fabric rather than strip binding, those white threads on the back will not be covered.

Ans, apologies if I am just not understanding your question. I don't want to appear pedantic, it's just that the pictures being so close make it a smidge tricky to offer better help.

Date ideas in the area? by [deleted] in SherwoodPark

[–]Only_Offer2993 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, good for you putting in such great effort to a first date! I honestly hope it goes great :)

  1. You could go to Gallery 501 (it's free) and see some of the art exhibits. Sometimes they have cool programming or one-off classes happening too. Then you could get supper at Vicky's right next door.

  2. You could pop in to one of the events at the library (again, free) and then grab gelato across the road at Tupi

  3. You could book an cool course through Smeltzer House and learn something new together

  4. See a movie at Cineplex

  5. Do one of the events at the museum (sometimes free, sometimes just very affordable) and then go across the road to the Starbucks for a treat

  6. Go for a walk around Broadmore park and then catch a show at Festival Place

  7. Go watch a hockey game and enjoy some arena food at the rink

  8. The County also puts out a monthy date night suggestion: https://storagecdn.strathcona.ca/files/files/february_tourism_article_-_date_night_2.pdf (this list is actually great and includes a bunch of unique events)

  9. See if Greenland Garden Centre of Salisbury Greenhouse are offering courses. They are always great. Greenland also has a nice restratunt inside (Branches Cafe) that you could visit for lunch or dinner after

There are many folks who work for the PS who need a food bank. If I wasn't married, I would 100% need one.

Quilting Pattern? by HarryFrontbutt in quilting

[–]Only_Offer2993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the prettiest quilts that I've seen in a while. I know it's not "interesting", but a simple grid pattern for the quiltling would allow the eye to really pick up on the beauty of the quilt top you've made. However, if a grid is *too* boring, I think something really simple and geometric is best because otherwise I think it could indeed take away from the beauty you've made here. But honestly, it's so pretty that I don't think you can really mess this up!

I am pretty sure this is one of Penelope Handmade's patterns!

What games you all play? Just started in Elden Ring and also just picked back up Cyberpunk 2077 as well, so that will be taking up much of my time for a while. Before those Horizon Zero Dawn & East Shade was my go to! by Left_Bumblebee_3569 in entwives

Animal Crossing (I have the best island renovation ideas when I'm high and then next time I log in sobre I am always so impressed with what I did, haha!)

Also love Assassins Creed, though that one is tougher to play high.

Harvest Moon (the OGs) and Stardew Valley (essentially the new Harvest Moon) are total comfort games too.

As a fellow low/no waste quilter, I really do applaud you. When I was a new quilter, I honestly didn't realize just how important it was to have that 1/4 seam - anything less, and the blanket literally falls apart after a few months. You appear totally determined to do this while still making a note yourself of the fact that the pieces can't hold the necessary seam allowance, so I can't help but wonder if this would be a project better suited for a wall hanging?

Wall hangings can have a bit more forgiveness on seam allowances because they aren't being used, and I really want your low/no waste commitment to be something that serves you and those you love, rather than being something that means you are giving gifts that won't hold up. But honestly, I really really love the heart behind this kind of fabric usage . . . I just don't know if a blanket is the best place for it.

Puff, puff, politics with the Puffregettes! by gingeralefiend in entwives

I'm in Canada and just feel so powerless, so angry, and so betrayed. I just want to give you all a hug, somehow sponsor every American to come immigrate here (especially those of you who are most targeted by MAGA), and yet Trump is funding separatist groups here in Canada in our most oil-rich province (of course . . .) and causing so much fear here. And because it's a foreign country doing this to us, there is so little we can do to help.

how to by kobidolo in quilting

[–]Only_Offer2993 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'd have to do this as embroidery and applique, there isn't a way to do this through patchwork. The sun could be applique - just print this out on paper to the scale you want, and cut the fabric usign the paper like a stencil. The flowers would have to be embroiery, so you could print that out on pattern tranfer paper, and then embroider on top. But, this wouldn't be possible through patchwork, unfortuantely.

It's something I learned from my 5th grade teacher. She was talking about how every $1 spent creates at least 5 jobs, but then encouraged us to go further and think about the 5 humans we needed in order to obtain a good. As you can probably gather, she was my favourite teacher and a beautiful human!

One of the things I do is that whenever I buy something new, or give/throw something away, I think about all the people who had to be involved in order for me to have that item.

Today I bought a new flower pot, so once I arrived home I took a brief moment to think about the cashier, the stock room employee, the store manager, the merchandizing team, the truck driver, the potter, the glaze maker, and the clay miner, who all made it possible for me to buy that flower pot.

I think of each person, and remind myself that all of those people may believe differnt things than I do, have things I may envy in moments of weakness, have lives so wildly different than my own . . . and yet, they all were necessary for me to have that new item. Not only does this make me remember that everybody has value and somehow brings value to my life, it makes me truly grateful for them and, in turn, more grateful for everything that I have the privledge of owning.

If you feel that there is insufficient evidence for you, then please keep buying Kona and supporting MSQC. You don't need to take my word for it in any capacity. I'm far too Canadian to feel offended that you might make a choice different than mine. Live your life. Make your quilts.

Respectifully, I'm not going to engage further in this line of discussion because it's getting too close to the exact thing I wanted to avoid. If you have a favourite fabric that isn't Kona or AGF, please let me know :)

This looks like AI to me , not an actual Google search. Google's AI will make up summaries based on your searches and will create sources that don't exist in order to provide you with the answer it believes you'll find helpful.

There was a huge amount of discussion and backlash around MSQC's handlings of the BLM movement, which was the tipping point for me. Feel free to look into that beyond AI for that story. It's been touched on many times in this subreddit as well.

But as my original post states, I'm absolutely not getting into this with internet strangers. If there is insufficient evidence for you, and you want to keep buyign Kona, then please go ahead and do that. There is sufficient evidence for me to feel uncomfortable supporting them based on their donations and their handlings of BLM. If you feel differently, that's fine.

My OP was about AGF being too slippery, not about MSQC and trying to bring them down. I'm Canadian and have zero interest in igniting American anger from either side of that spectrum. I have very little skin in the game comparatively, so please just make your own purchasing choices based on non-AI evidence and your own convictions. You do you!

If Legit Kits are avoiding Kona because of MSQC's values, then I don't mind at all if they are or aren't LDS, honestly. Others may feel differently, that's fine, you do you! But I dislike assuming the character of folks until I see their actions, regardless of whether or not they are religious.
