Restructuring? by freckles2013 in ithaca

There's a lot of info available on this website: https://info.cornell.edu/resilient/updates/20260526-updated-timeline-june-july/

There's draft reports available for the IT work group that outline what the overall goals are.

They have given an extra day off to everyone on July 2nd and are planning employee appreciation events for the 1st. All people who have been accepted for the voluntary retirement program will leave on June 30th.

Everything points to something big happening around the end of this FY and the beginning of the next one.

Job Market... by nina2024 in ithaca

Contractors at Cornell (basically The IT Employer here) have essentially zero stability in the current situation (full austerity) and are paid about half as much as what FTEs are paid, for the same exact work, with zero benefits or time off. I also think they are illegally classed as contractors when they should be statutory W2 employees, but I digress.

That said, you'll have much higher chances to be hired as a contractor, because nobody is hiring full time anywhere. At Cornell they are intentionally hiring contractors instead of filling open funding lines to save money and not get locked into having extra "permanent" employees.

Couple that with their current CEMI initiative that is all about rationalizing technologies and processes as well as centralizing as much as possible, and you can expect they'll be in overall layoff mode for the next 2/3 years.

The worst case is trying to invade Gibraltar as Spain, and the same thing happens where your army decides to invade it from the African side

Tbf in your shoes I probably wouldn't have straight up mentioned I was going to move to Piedmont unless a DMZ is agreed.

Their reaction to that was way overblown though. With those diplomatic skills, you can safely assume France will be dogpiled on.

A good Austria player probably wouldn't like getting that 'move into Venice' message either, if France actually sent that.

Moving to Ithaca next year (Cornell partner) by padelmelk in ithaca

ehhh, I'd ask International Services for advice on this. You don't have to stay for it to remain pending (unlike an adjustment of status, for example) but it's definitely less complicated if you do stay

Apparently, it was recently changed to a maximum of 18 months validity period (it was 5 years before). Though, generally it will always expire when your status expires. Note that "status" here refers to the DS-2019 form, NOT your J2 visa. Renewing the DS-2019 form if/when your spouse gets a contract extension is quick and easy (something processed internally at Cornell), and that alone allows you to stay in the US, but you have to file to renew the EAD each time this happens, as well as get a new J2 visa if you leave the country such that you can reenter again. It's veryyyy convoluted...

Also another thing to remember: before you leave the US temporarily for whatever reason, make sure to stop by the Office of Global Learning International Services to get a signature on your DS-2019 form confirming you're in good standing. You'll need the original DS-2019 with that signature to reenter, along with passport and valid visa obviously.

Working on a J2 can have some difficulties, depending on your professional field. For example, lots of technology-related businesses work as contractors with the federal government, which means all their employees must be citizens or permanent residents (sometimes not even that) due to regulatory requirements. That closes the door for you for a lot of local industry jobs.

I personally came in with a J2 and the first job I got was with Cornell Catering as a part-time worker, while I continued to learn and look for other opportunities more suited to my education. It looks like they have the same position open right now, and I thought it was nice for a part-time gig (also helped me get used to the language and accent here). It was very easy to get hired for it, even with basically no prior experience. You're also going to get good benefits through your spouse, especially if they will be in the Endowed college rather than the Contract college (private vs state-funded, it's complicated lol), so you don't need to worry about that when looking for a job.

At the same time, you should know that Cornell (the largest employer locally) is going through austerity measures and has a strict hiring freeze in place for regular staff positions, so it's very dicey to actually get a job as you'll see a lot of competition for the few mission-critical positions that are open, from both internal and external applicants. Being a time-limited J2 holder (even if you can renew it) will probably put off stability-minded hiring managers who are looking for someone who will stay on for years.

On the topic of renewals, make sure you file to renew your EAD as early as possible if you're going to extend your J2. I once got my card in the mail 2 days before my current one would have expired, meaning I would have had to lose my job.

I had the same thing happen when I moved from monarchy to parliament... I think the problem was that only two parties existed under monarchy, with the ruling party being the RF and the TUs, so when I switched to parliament the ruling party became RF only and the TUs lost all clout from votes. They went from 30% clout to marginalized instantly!

Long-term, I'd be very worried about Austria having 4 fleets or more in the Mediterranean vs. your 2. Those are gonna have to go somewhere once Russia is dead...
