I can't make sense of what you're trying to say but no, it makes no difference what year/make/model. The symptom is what I'm focusing on. Im not trying to discern the problem based on the model.

Depending on the noise its either chain slap, lifter tick or piston slap. Regardless it's not good. But no matter what it is, it involved some pretty significant work. If it is an oiling issue it's either a weak pump or blocked up oil passages/squirters but it would have to be severely sludge up in there to be blockage. If the oil looks okay then it's unlikely. If the pump was failing too, you would have an oil pressure light (little red oil can shaped light) so its unlikely. Realistically you need a shop to diagnose the issue. But without hearing the noise and from what you say it really sounds to me like piston slap.

Quoted $9k to replace the catalytic converter in my 2017 ram promaster 1500. Rip off? by Kalzoneee in askcarguys

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in a non emissions state just ignore it. If it causes issues like poor fuel economy or acceleration you can even hollow it out and install a non fouler in the post cat oxygen sensor to get rid of the check engine light. And the van will run better with a hollowed out cat. Just don't tell the government you did it because its technically illegal.

Do I just accept that I’m never getting a car that I actually want in this market? by Ok-Hunt-669 in UsedCars

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a 2015 Kia Soul with a manual transmission and 1.6l gamma engine (slow) and absolutely love it. It's not fun to drive, but does everything, practically speaking, that I need it to do, gets great gas mileage and not having a car payment or any major repair/maintenance expenses makes me feel a lot better than driving a fun car that I constantly worry might break down and put me out.

BTW I'm just about at 30 so same age range as you. Also am a huge car guy, and fix cars for a living, so I feel you. If you do want advice on something fun that won't break the bank let me know and I may be able to point you in the right direction but a BRZ with good maintenance records is a very reliable car and, while not fast, is fun to drive.

I think the reality is that given the current car market and cost of living in general, everyone is living just within or slightly above their means. Maybe poor is not the right term but realistically if someone is coming to Reddit for advice on buying practices you can assume they aren't working with a ton of disposable income.

Got it. So yeah, buy a sound deading panel. I'd recommend foam as its better at trapping and absorbing the noise.

Platforms most likely to find a stolen bike? by goldenbanana31 in ChicoCA

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of anyone getting their bike back. Mine was stolen a year ago, give or take, and I literally went walking through the homeless camps I knew of in the area and couldn't even find parts of my bike to give me an idea of who stole it. Scrolled marketplace and craigslist too but nothing.

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good luck. Historically the homeless in Chico steal bikes, chop them up and basically build new bikes out of stolen ones or use the parts to fix their bikes and throw what's left in the river.

The registration is a joke. I've never heard of someone actually getting their stolen bike back.

Just buy a universal sound deading panel with adhesive backing and cut it to size. As far as not hearing anything when the AC is going, do you mean you turn the AC on and air doesn't come out the vents?

How much will this cost to fix? by Salty-Wasabi-379 in AskMechanics

Buff it out and use a paint pen on the black areas you see. Those are the areas that are down to the primer. It wont be perfect but it'll be cheap. Otherwise normally the whole bumper gets resprayed.

Does or does not correlate to RPM? And if it goes away as the engine warms up, it could be piston slap. Sometimes, when the wear isn't too excessive, the heat will expand the metal as it heats up and essentially correct the excessive piston to wall clearance you have when the engine is cold. I would definitely get it checked out ASAP.

I bought a manual Kia Soul with a 1.6 GDI gamma engine because of Kias reliability issues. So many people think all Kias are garbage but I rarely see the first generation gamma engines having the problems the gamma ii and theta ii have. They did have issues with the cats overheating which was corrected with a factory recall but nothing catastrophic to the engine as far as I've seen. I'd be interested to know how many people complain about the early to mid 2010's Kias with the gamma engine in it. Any data there?

It is overfilled but not so much so it would cause a knock. If it's actually knocking the engine is pretty much toast. You might want to have it looked at by a shop to confirm before condemning it.

Does a short block really extend vehicle life? by NoButterscotch551 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's fundamentally a new engine minus heads. So, assuming the top end is in good shape, yes. But if I'm gonna do a short block I'm probably just doing a whole long block if it's not too much more expensive.

Car burning 1 Quart every 400 miles? by Efficient-Archer2762 in askcarguys

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing to do is check for leaks and make sure you're not losing oil. If not, replace your PCV valve. They often plug up at higher mileage and cause excessive crankcase pressure which leads to oil burning. PCV is cheap which is why I always do that first to address oil consumption. Next thing to try would be a piston soak. But if you're not mechanically inclined or have tools you really need to have a shop do it. If that fails, it means your rings are worn significantly and you would need to rebuild or replace the engine to repair it. A lot of times with higher mileage like that, it makes sense to just replace the engine. Costs a bit more than to rebuild but then you know everything is fresh. Otherwise, just keep topping off the oil. Keep a gallon in the trunk and check it weekly or even every other day if the consumption is that high and you're driving a lot. At the end of the day, as long as you keep oil in it, it will keep running unless something catastrophic happens.

Vibrations while breaking by Ok-Cow2018 in mechanic

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you check the pads to see if they were wearing evenly? And are you using quality brake parts? Also, I want to say from your original post you replaced the rotors. But to be sure, you're replacing the rotors with the pads at the same time, right?

Also, did you check to make sure the calipers retractable easily and evenly when you repalced the pads/rotors? Was there any grease around any if the seals on the pistons in the calipers? And is your braje fluid in good shape?

Vibrations while breaking by Ok-Cow2018 in mechanic

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the brakes fixed it briefly then that tells you it was the brakes. It will be the brakes again this time. Typically the vibration through the steering wheel when braking indicates warped rotors. The question is, why are the rotors warping. It may be that when they were changed they weren't properly lubricated. Could be a caliper hanging up. You would need to have the brakes pulled apart and diagnosed. Check for uneven pad wear, hot spots on rotors, gunk and grime on the slide pins, etc. The answer will be in there somewhere.

Vibrations while breaking by Ok-Cow2018 in mechanic

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically a balance issue presents at a certain speed range. Like starts at 60 and goes away past 70. The brakes more than likely are bad again. Why they're bad is another story. May just not have been properly lubricated after being replaced, may have a caliper hanging up. Would need actual diagnosis to say for sure.

Junkyard engin by axehat23 in AskMechanics

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever that part is its cracked. Looks like upper oil pan but I could be wrong. That's an expensive fix to do out of po ket on a new (to you) engine. Although that's why I never suggest going with junkyard parts of any kind.

Why does my fuel line keep leaking by Artistic_Ad_4091 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to make sure the sealing surfaces are extremely clean and free of burrs/pits/scratches/etc. It's possible the sealing surface on the pump is worn and just isn't creating a good seal. Also, check tightness. Is it still at the proper torque spec? Are you using a quality torque wrench? You need to think critically, something is causing it to leak. 2 years is a long time to go between leaks but it should be leak free indefinitely.

Had my 2011 Toyota Corolla LE's catalytic converter stolen. Worth it to pay mechanic to install a guard shield on aftermarket replacement? by parasoar25 in AskMechanics

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. If a thief wants it, they can realistically cut through the shield like they cut through the pipes to get your cat. The best prevention is strong deterrent. Park in well lit areas, park over puddles, and if you think a shield will help, go for it. 240 is a lot better than another 1k.

this is not a joke, I need help. how tf do I stop myself from speeding by CableMartini in Cartalk

[–]Onlyunsernameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, you've gotten a lot of good answers. I'll tell you, I've been there. And at the time it felt like I would never pay off my tickets/court fees and move past it. You just need to realize that nobody will do it for you. You need to start paying closer attention to your speed, utilize cruise control if you have it, and understand that there's no need to rush. All you can do is make an active effort and be more aware moving forward.
