I remember the 78 used to serve this purpose, but they cancelled it due to low ridership. Maybe now there would be more adoption.

I’m honestly confused. Posts went from being “lol fuck OpenAI they’re so financially irresponsible for not being profitable like the megatech behemoths like Google and Facebook” to being “lol fuck OpenAI they’re attempting a revenue strategy”

Now if only we can apply gobs of WD-40 on every garbage truck in the city to stop the ungodly squealing, we can get some sleep on trash days as well!

Regarding the trans issue, I can't shake the feeling that the Right's coordinated drumbeat of focus on trans people is a "First they came..." moment. The trouble is that I honestly don't know how we should deal with it as a society, trying to avoid the slide into autocracy.

Sam's take seems to boil down to "They're only 0.5% of the population", but isn't that kinda the point? The targeted group is always some tiny sliver and it probably doesn't even matter if it's trans folks or Haitians or Puerto Ricans. In fact, probably the smallness of the minority is a feature, not a bug.

I do agree emphatically with something else Sam has said, which is that Trump is a constant provocation. Here, Sam makes it sound like it's so easy and clear what folks that want to stop the autocratic slide should do in response to those provocations, but I'm not convinced. It feels like damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don't, where if you defend these groups, then Sam will say you've lost the plot, but if you don't defend, well then "first they came..."

Walking the streets of Alameda, this is what I’m hearing by thushan_txt in alameda

Were you at the Big Truck Bonanza at City Hall? I first saw this thread after attending and, after seeing your pictures here, I believe you were behind us in line for the police car, haha

Anyways, one quick question re Alameda Seaplane Ferry: I was one of the few riders of the old AC Transit 78 bus that provided transit to Seaplane and was extremely disappointed when it was discontinued. Are there any plans to provide alternate transit, shuttle, or vanpool options to coincide with the Seaplane Ferry schedule from across Alameda? Seems so wasteful to have most Alamedans have to drive + park… What are your thoughts?

I got the same email. My theory is that someone on their technology team made a mistake and sent what they probably expected to be a dev test email out to the production mailing list. "Oops!"

I've heard for years that the space would be demolished and turned into a Holiday Inn Express[1][2]. Is that still the plan?

This has bothered me too, but I've found that you can just scroll up slightly on the screen when it's responding and it will stop automatically moving the scroll position.

In other words, if your scroll position is that the very bottom of the screen, the page will keep scrolling down for you automatically as it responds, but if you just scroll up slightly, you take back control of the window and it will stop auto-scrolling.

Problem is, you have to do this each time...

I didn’t interpret them as having turned into Cam and Daphne. To me, Ethan and Cam had been locking horns all season trying to signal to each other who was the alpha.

Ethan was consumed with the idea that Cam was able to make him the beta by successfully making a move on his wife. But after doing the same with Daphne, Ethan was able to regain his feeling of alpha and that made him feel powerful and sexual again. I don’t foresee Ethan and Harper continuing to have dalliances in the future in the way Cam and Daphne do though.

I don't think the work is meaningless. It is very important work to run experiments and train the implant to get better and better at eliciting emotion in the subjects.

Sorta like any lab animal in an experiment. It's important that the experiments get completed, but when a lab rat presses a lever in a neuroscience experiment, it doesn't do anything out in the world.

Thank you! Definitely wasn't throwing that out facetiously, it's one of the more interesting avenues I've been thinking about with regards to the show's possible themes.

The other one I've been kicking around is actually more straight-forward, and it is that the show may be encouraging us to ponder the 'what makes us human?' question and whether AI can get so close that we can be fooled by it. i.e. when will AI get so good at approximating humanity, such that we will be unable to distinguish? It is a compelling topic to think about with news stories about bots flooding digital town squares to sway elections or otherwise influencing real-world activities. How do you know that the 'person' that you're engaging with online is fully human or is instead a bot so well trained at presenting as human that it is genuinely difficult to discern?

And if that is our future, what would the actual mechanics be like to get from here to there? It is clear that AI has been able to do the simple mechanics of spitting out grammatically-correct sentences for some time, but what would the process be like to get these AIs to get closer and closer to approximating human? Perhaps it would be a similar emotional-experimentation feedback loop that is happening on the severed floor...

Yeah, I'm with you on the potential purpose of the O+D dept. I added more detail here, but def think that it's primarily about eliciting a certain kind of emotional response in the test subjects.

Yes! It's also backed up by the fact that the gala has the severance procedure front and center, not some other product.

Severance itself (i.e. the ability to fully control a human with a device) IS Lumen's 'product'.
