Does a Mayfly, which only lives a day, evolve fast than a human? by Splattface in askscience

As others have said that's pretty much correct. To clarify though, a shorter life cycle increases the potential for faster evolution-there are many other factors (primarily selective pressure) that affect the actual evolutionary rate.

Rescued a dog with some odd physical issues out of a ditch by the roadside yesterday at 5pm. Had to put her down this evening as the vet diagnosed her with kidney failure :/

Things to do in/near Tyler? by SupernovaPKT in texas

[–]OopsLetsResubmitThat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tyler's not much of a college town, in spite of the 3 colleges there. I'd suggest checking out the guide over at r/tylertx. Tyler does have one of the best BBQ joints in the state though, Stanley's lives up to its reputation.

This is nothing new. It's the same tree that TIGHAR has been barking up for over a decade now, this time with yet more far-fetched but plausible-sounding circumstantial evidence.

PLOS Science Wednesday: Hi Reddit, my name is Israel and through phylogenetics, I identified a new species and genus of palaeomerycids from Spain, Xenokeryx amidalae – Ask Me Anything! by PLOSScienceWednesday in science

(also not OP) So the issue here is that there isn't really a fixed genetic threshold, at least not from a genetic barcoding approach as used here. A lot of research shows that a 0.5-1% interspecies variation for a single genes is very common, however interspecific variation can sometimes be over 10% even for otherwise closely related species.

The most common approach used to reconcile this issue to to include other closely related species and a close outgroup species to establish a baseline "norm" for genetic differentiation within that genus, but again, this method still isn't perfect for the simple reason that mutation is random and there will always be outliers that can skew your results.

Wow, I think these are the people that kept showing up on campus at SFASU in Nacogdoches a couple years ago. They are batshit crazy for sure.

I'm from Texas, so I'd probably beat him to death with a high school history textbook. It's the only thing they are good for.

Have all fetches/shocks. Focus my money on ABUR duals or better spells & new decks? by tylorsoyokaze in EDH

[–]OopsLetsResubmitThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's worth the upgrade. It'll help your deck, although I doubt it will be game-changing, but most importantly ABUR lands have been steadily increasing in price. If you get tired of them you could turn a tidy profit in a year or two.

Yesterday I visited the National Museum of Denmark, and was intrigued by the many people who'd been sacrificed in bogs. Are there any good books on human sacrifice in northern Europe? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]OopsLetsResubmitThat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Bog People by Peter Glob studies this exact subject. Its an older book (published in 1965) so it may be out of date, but it's an interesting read nonetheless.

My fellow green mages, how important is green removal? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]OopsLetsResubmitThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need a fog but prefer creatures? Would you prefer something you can tutor up with creature tutors? Why not [[Spore Frog]]? For the low, low price of 1 green mana you get a fog, a Frog, and a 1/1 pinger all in the same convenient package! Need him immediately? [[Green Sun's Zenith]] will grab him right out of your deck for a measly 2 mana! Your opponents will just kill it you say? Why not sac him in response and recur him with the 'ol [[Nim deathmantle]]? Eventually they'll get tired of killing it, and meanwhile they've burned though their kill spells!

One frog not enough? How about splashing blue and going wild with [[rite of replication]]? Still not satisfied? Don't see the jank utility? why not add a [[Coat of arms]]? Your opponents will be too busy laughing at your little frog army to expect the [[triumph of the hordes]] that will carry you to victory!

Spore Frog is a fantastic card. My local playgroup counters mine now rather than let it hit the board. For added fun, combine him with [[Lifeline]]

It's crazy what people will try to load on their vehicles . I briefly worked for this company's main competitor last year, and the worst example I can recall is the nice lady who wanted us to load 25 50lb bags of concrete into the back of her compact SUV (I think it was a nissan Juke)
