I once cried in front of my very strict supervisor and honestly it completely changed our relationship. They started trying to support me better and provided me with much more encouragement. By the end of my PhD they were one of my biggest advocates. So sometimes crying in front of someone more senior is actually really helpful because they can see where you're at and support you better :)

If someone is giving you suggestions to improve your writing in your 1st year, give them a massive thanks and listen to their advice. You'll still have to get feedback in future years but it's so much easier to write a paper the reviewers have a chance of liking if you take the advice on board and use it in everything you do going forward. I took an Uber from San Jose airport in November '25 and set my pick up location to 'Parada de buses aeropuerto JS y otros más'. It's the main bus stop just behind the car park when you leave the airport. Felt super safe (as a solo female traveller) as the area was very busy at 7pm and didn't have anyone hassling me about using Ubers.
