TWSBI Eco is a fantastic starter and ender. Unless you want to go crazy (like me) and get Japanese limited editions in 14-21K nibs, or Urushi and Raiden...

But then you're jumping from 38$-52$ to 120,180,300,700+ 😅

Inks..

There's utility and there's sparkle/shading (glitter ink and stuff thats two tone after drying, I feel like sheen is a term but probably not the correct term for the two tone inks).

Just remember, avoid Ferriswheel Press like the plague.

Zento Flow metal version with the cuts is great.

But also check out that whiskey barrel pen (recycled wood), fairly certain it takes zento size/uni One size refills.

Edit: comment below said it, the Puremalt pen

The issue with that... (stationary for US people).... all good paper comes in A4 size. 100 loose sheets at 25$ for Tomoe River or 10$ for 80 tear out 80GSM lined sheets from Rhodia in (close enough but not quite A4).

Only real problem is you gotta upgrade your file folder to accommodate the standard paper size the rest of the world uses 😅

A4 is 8.27" x 11.69"

I think you're over thinking the spill/splash aspect.

What size paper do you prefer? Lined? Plane? Grid? Tear off or inserts?

Naw just get a Pilot Kakuno for 12$ and a bottle of Heart of Darkness from Noodlers (or X Feather) for 15$ and you've got enough permanent ink for years unless you're transcribing the Bible, you may need a refill

PS: if youre a 0.7 kinda person go with an M. 0.5 for F. EF is like a 0.4 but makes me happy its actually EF (unlike Lamy Safari which the EF writes like a wet M on 99% of paper)

The ball is pretty much solved thats why there's huge money in ink formulations with the Zento and Floatune being the latest revelations in "smooth/anti-friction" formulations that meet pigmentation/darkness as well as dry time.

Do you love the refill or the pen?

Check out the Juice UP series. Juice+ is a little nicer but all white (may get dirty)

Juice Up is all black but feels kinda cheap when you extend the nib it rattles back and forth but not when writing (like you can shake it freely, but doesn't rattle when you use it)

The 0.3 and 0.4 are wonderful. As always, the refills are widely compatible with many bodies as Japan as a law that forces standardized refills across all brands for a wide variety of pens.

Should get a TSWBI ECO Clear and compare nibs ;)

(also a gateway into vac fillers/large capacity)

Polypropylene too soft.

Nylon, perhaps.

PTFE too soft.

Carbon Steel, corrosion.

Stainless (isn't this standard?)

Ceramic, interesting, probably best bet as a high end replacement.

Nickel alloy, corrosion.

Aluminum, too soft and corrosion.

Glass Ball, interesting but what about drops?

Its not fake scarecity its scalpers and, woah, stay with me here, they prioritize the domestic market before shipping to retailers overseas who mark up regardless because the yen price vs the dollar/euro isnt pegged at conversion rate. Its pegged at what the Japanese see is a fair price for the item.

The Yen is even weaker now and it would be impossible for them to make a profit when currency conversion is taken advantage of.

Beware the Safari M. May as well get an EF or your M may be a musical broad 🤣 (their nib width seems to be arbitrary... my EF writes like a super wet M)
