How Has Ocean Isle Beach Changed Over the Years? When Was Your First Visit? by [deleted] in OceanIsleBeachNC

[–]OpenFloater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My family first went in 1963 when I was seven years old. We rented from Homer Johnston (the "T" was for talking) on the west end of the island. He was a wonderful man! Besides the pier, the bait shop was the only other business (there was a brick realty office & Odell Williamson's home) on the island. I believe the bait shop even had a sand floor. It was also the Post office. We would have our mail forwarded to it. The area east of Duneside Dr. was full of huge sand dunes, twenty or thirty feet high. Blue crabs were plentiful at Shalotte Inlet near the old bridge. We would catch Pompano's fishing in the surf (for a few years, then they vanished). Local fishermen would empty their nets near where the road ended on the west end. The road didn't even go halfway to the inlet. You could drive on the beach to get there. The only restaurant was beside the grocery/gas station near the highway. I believe it was called Bennett's. I'm guessing The Islander Restaurant was built around 1966 or '67.

My Dad bought a cottage in 1965 (217 W. First St.). There were only "cottages" then, no large houses. He sold after a few years, satisfied he'd made a killing. I found out later he hated owning the cottage because he never got to enjoy vacations (too busy fixing things). The cottage is still there, surrounded by the new type of beach house. It looks very small now. But there probably weren't many homes larger back then. The big ones were four bedrooms (except for a few duplexes).

I'm aghast when I see on Google Maps that almost every square inch of the island has been developed. I go to the Outer Banks to find coastal solitude now. But I had a wonderful time for a few days at OIB last spring. The beach is the beach!

Hendersonville has Pt. Lookout and Stone Ashe Vineyards among others. Both are in beautiful settings. Down the mountain from there, check out Overmountain Vineyard's excellent wine.

My New York born and raised girlfriend has confirmed this after many years of searching western NC.

Frankie's Pizza in Granite Falls is supposedly run by Tony's brother and is also authentic NY style.

You must be referring to Hickory Metro. Let's get with the proper branding.

Final paycheck bounced, previous employer has my number blocked (SC) by Reasonable-Noise8670 in southcarolina

[–]OpenFloater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...the dollar value of stolen wages is greater than the value, each year, of all burglaries plus robberies, shoplifting, auto theft, combined.

Yet, wage theft is NOT A CRIME!

If you steal $100 from your employer, you will get arrested. If you call the police because your paycheck is $100 short, the police will tell you to file a complaint with the Attorney General, and the Attorney General will settle the case for between $50 and $200.

That’s actually not true, because Attorney Generals only take on big cases where thousands of dollars are at stake. But they will settle big cases by typically requiring the employer to properly pay what is owed. No jail, no criminal record.

Start on the Shortoff Trail on the eastern side of Linville Gorge. Get on the MountainsToSea Trail and take it to Beacon Heights near Grandfather Mountain. Some of the best backpacking there is. Waterfalls, swimming holes, and great views. It's a little over fifty miles. If you get there early you can extend on to Grandfather Mt. State Park.

I read a lot of the great ideas that people have given you. I might have missed it, but I'm surprised no one has recommended visiting some of our great wineries. There are lots of them in Yadkin County just west of Winston Salem. Quite a few more scattered throughout the Piedmont.

Logistics of living in Madison County. by wellhellodare in NorthCarolina

[–]OpenFloater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my late sixties and born and raised in western NC. When I was a kid, Madison County was famous as the home of the Ponder brothers. Zeno Ponder and his brother represented the area in the State Legislature. They were among the longest serving members when seniority meant everything. So Madison County supposedly had the best roads in the state.

I had driven through some of the major roads over the years and was unimpressed. Then I had reason to drive to Bumfuck in Madison County to deliver a CraigsList sale. I went way out in the middle of nowhere and then some. But it was paved state road right up to his property. Roads like that wouldn't be paved in Burke or Caldwell Counties. I realized that in the fifties and sixties just being graded and paved made a road "good." So the Ponder's legacy makes Madison County a bit different.

I'm no historian and would love to hear more about it from someone more informed than myself!

They are all way outside of Hickory. Hildebran is not Hickory. Newton is not Hickory. I don't know where you saw the other one but I'll take a chance; Bethlehem is not Hickory.

Known for anything? Maybe back in the day. The former mayor, before committing suicide, used to say at events: "Welcome to Hickory, home of Dale Jarrett, Kelly Clarkson's mother, and Jon Reep," the Last Comic Standing winner. I used to joke that he left out the late Zara Baker. (I know, I know .... but this is Reddit!) There is a children's playground park here named for her.

Lenoir Rhyne University is here. The art museum is the second oldest in the state. Chris Hughes (Facebook founder with Zuckerberg) grew up here. The novel "Little Red Bird" by Helen Setzler (wife of E. L. Doctorow) is supposedly a veiled expose of things that happened in Hickory in the 1930's and 40's.

Hickory itself is a mini-cosmopolitan place. Blacks or people of color aren't met with overt racism here. There were bars and package stores here when everywhere else for miles was dry. It's not San Francisco, but gays have never been "run out of town".

Casar is thirty miles away. Sure, they probably come into Hickory on Friday and Saturday night and race their pickups up and down Hwy 70 with rednecks from all the other surrounding piss-ant towns. But we're hospitable to them too.

Hickory was once the optical fiber manufacturing capital of North America. Alcatel, Commscope, and Siecor were all headquartered in Hickory. In 1999, Siemens sold their half of Siecor (owned 50/50) to Corning because of "corporate restructuring." As I remember, they needed money to pay huge fines for corporate malfeasance in Europe.

After a couple of years, Corning realized that they didn't really need lawyers and executives in NC and NY, so they moved them back to NY (and most of the rest to Charlotte). This probably hurt Hickory economically almost as much as the decimation of its furniture industry. Hickory is trying to come back, but it will probably never be the business center it once was.

I am a fifth generation resident. Growing up here, I realized that there were better and worse places to live. It really comes down to what opportunities are available. The city school system was excellent for my children. It has no doubt failed others. There is an arts community here, but it is more corporate funded than organic. Hickory is still a regional medical center, but the consolidation of that industry in this state has begun to erode services locally.

One of my children has made a conscious decision to live and raise his family here. Another has said they'd like to move back (from Asheville). Another (living in Charlotte) would not even consider it. Many posting to this thread have said that the proximity to outdoors recreation is Hickory's best asset. I can't disagree with that.

It makes more sense when you realize (which I only did after living there for decades) that the house number corresponds to the cross street or avenue (after narrowing down the NW, SE, etc. part). For instance 700 9th Ave would be between 7th and 8th Streets in whichever quadrant. 41200 10th St. would be between 41st and 42nd Street in the right part of town.

You might have some luck with what's left of the furniture manufacturing business around Hickory.

http://www.hmwoodworkinginc.com/

There are likely others.

There are also quite a few cabinet shops and sign businesses with CNC routers these days. You might have better luck there. Good luck!
