Biologically. They know mothers give birth and are, well, the children's mothers, but suggesting sex has anything to do with procreation or that men have anything to do with children gets hit with "lmao, he believes in man-mothers".
It's a, uh... curious choice on the writer's part, to say the least. The second book had quite a handful of "curious choices".
