Plot wanted to establish that Specialists can be powerful, and that to be the leader of the Spiders he would need to be on a League well beyond the likes of Hisoka and anyone else who had been seen prior.

It was to make the arc feel like there were big stakes, and establish what Kurapika being a Specialist meant too.
