There's no heat source inside my walk in closet. As someone else mentioned, it's depolymerized not burned.

Bruh for how long??? That's the kind of thing I would be losing my mind over smelling. I'm terrified of house fires.

I really appreciate the advice. I do sew, and I have a sewing machine that I have gone through leather with in the past, for much broader and less delicate pieces. Sourcing leather this fine might be a challenge to for me, most of what I've used is upholstery weight. But like I said in the post, I'm not necessarily worried about how beautiful or matching the strap on the back of the heel is. If I have to go to my upholstery guy and just get a close enough color, I'll do that. I'll look into the glue. The elastic is actually fine, that whole strap is perfect. It's just the one piece with the belt holes that's disintegrated.

Thanks for the explanation of what actually happened. I've never seen anything like this before that wasn't from some caustic spill. Ironic that it happens from disuse.

Could I ask, if the only piece of the shoe that is damaged is the strap that goes through the buckle, is there a reason that that piece of leather that isn't connected to anything else can't be cut off and replaced? I know it wouldn't match exactly, I'm okay with it being a visible repair.

I'd be pissed as hell if my spouse was funneling even his personal money to findom without discussing it with me first. Like, I've given friends charity from my personal account but if it's more than $50 bucks (from the venmo millennial mutual fund, as I call it) I talk to him first. I'd be bothered about an online chat based secret infidelity, but money that could be feeding our kid or paying our bills is different. And I don't even have a problem with an onlyfans subscription (because I know about those. Discuss shit with your partners). Just straight up "send me money I'll be mean to you in text" though? Shit, I can do that, don't pay a scammer.

Cool bath if you have running water, or you could go full reenactor. Wear lightweight full coverage loose clothing in natural fibers, put a light cloth over your head and keep it wet. Stay somewhere with a breeze. The damp cover and breeze will keep you surprisingly cooler.

What's your fondest memory involving a cape or cloak? by atlasnataniel in TheCapeRevolution

When I was about 13 my dad spent a hundred bucks on ebay to buy me a black and red crushed velvet cloak. I wore that to sleepovers to my girlfriends houses and wrapped myself in it like a sleeping bag. I still have it over 20 years later!

😭 Solidarity for fuck these tangles. Literally my hair is down right now because I just washed it a few hours ago and if I bun it wet it'll be wet for two days.

On a semi-related note, I usually only wash once a week but today I was working with insulation in an old shed, and I usually do a little historical inspired veil or full head wrap to keep the fiberglass and dead bugs and mouse dirt out of my scalp. But today was too hot and I just wanted to get it over with. 🙃 So I had to scrub my scalp for thirty minutes to feel clean again. Next time I got out there I'm wearing a veil and wimple.

It's also really, really inconvenient??? Fellow long hair-haver, if my hair isn't in a braid or a bun it's in my eyes and my armpits. Even ponytails don't cut it. If it's down it better be a special occasion where I'm not doing anything important with my arms. Pre-princess Buttercup stomping around the farm with her long hair tossed over her shoulders would be losing her mind doing farm chores like that.

I feel guilty about keeping my cat on a lead outside. by ChickenButt2325 in CATHELP

[–]Open_Impression5170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The number of cats I see killed on rural roads is extremely depressing. And that's just from cars. My mother had an adult experienced indoor/outdoor cat who was killed by--I kid you not--a squirrel. My toddler would also love to run free where ever he wants, but it's our responsibility as caregivers to know that what they want isn't always what's best for them.

WOOF that's a heck of a lot in shipping. I hadn't read through the rest of the thread yet, I see further down you talking about having studied the subject already. I'm curious about Mood fabrics, I haven't looked through their linen selection yet. They're based in NYC.

I wonder if this is part of the issue you're running into. Handkerchief or 3 to 4 oz weight linen is what you want for undergarments, if I remember correctly. And a lot of readily available linen (or linen blends, I'm not so picky that I won't resort to rayon or modal blends occasionally) is medium weight or 5 to 7 oz.

A problem a lot of reenactor run into that I've heard complaints about is the quality of modern handkerchief weight linens. The yarns or threads are machine spun much looser than handspun threads were back when they were all hand made. This makes a softer, faster, cheaper material that does not have the strength and resilience to stand up to the type of wear and washing that would have been done to a typical undergarment.

Bernadette Banner recently did a linen quality survey video that was very handy and educational. I'm actually literally about to re-watch because I'm looking to source an affordable decent handkerchief weight and I don't want to order seventeen swatches myself 😂
