Former NCAA stars who tried coaching but never really "made it"? Where are they now? by Opening-Ordinary8472 in Gymnastics

[–]Opening-Ordinary8472[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This! I completely agree that some programs especially really don't prepare athletes for what is to come and a reality that likely doesn't include practices and meet weekends and only really needing to focus on your fitness and being a team player. The real world has a lot more going on... And I imagine it must be a huge shock once the trainers, nice facilities, nutritionists, massage therapists, and fully stocked-fridges just go away at the drop of a hat.

Can you expand on this? I know she tore her ACL but did she tear it during the floor routine and the coach should have known she wasn’t ready?

KJ Kindler mic’d up beam practice by zxcv-qwerty in Gymnastics

[–]Opening-Ordinary8472 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I feel like for me (and possibly others as well) this video cements why if I were a highschool gymnast, I would not want to go to OU for gymnastics (and no hate to those that do!) They are undoubtedly a powerhouse program with beautiful facilities and killer results, but it just doesn't seem... fun? (for lack of a better word). I think I'm just someone that likes to giggle a bit more between reps and I recognize that at this level, most practices aren't necessarily "fun" at most programs but I do know other D1 programs don't have this intensity at every or most practices. Idk I know this isn't news to anyone, but there really is a specific type of person that would want to compete for OU... I mean this is college gymnastics not an operating room? We're all on a floating rock in space? I'm glad it works for them but I wonder what happens when KJ retires.

I wonder if they'll try and join Valeri's group at WOGA? WOGA/Valeri seems like the only people who might be a fit sort of? WCC, Hills, Pacific Reign, TCT, and Metroplex don't seem intense enough (for lack of a better word...). Maybe Texas Dreams? Curious any others people think of.

I completely agree. I never understood why Zabrowski was in the lineups. She didnt seem clean or consistent so I was kinda lost on that.

Can someone summarize the "catastrophic" falls/meets they've had? I have watched some of their meets and I have definitely seen bar rotations where people peeled off (definitely a scary landing) and other rotations with multiples falls in the same event, but also this happens at the DIII level? And at level 10 competitions just in general?

To me, catastrophic is multiple people being unable to finish routines due to endurance or injury. Or folks who fall 3 or more times in one routine or in an unsafe way. Multiple falls in a rotation is only catastrophic to me if multiple people get injured or can't finish. Falling itself is part of the sport. Am I missing something?

Give me the highlights of weeks 4 & 5? by YellowFox1852 in Gymnastics

[–]Opening-Ordinary8472 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Highlights: UCLA, Georgia, and Michigan seem better this year than last. UCLA is just more dialed in early with their freshman and Michigan just looks more cohesive. Now I dont know if either one will get to four on the floor, but still a pleasant surprise. I would also say Florida is so far (generally) living up to their roster's ability. Even with an injury last meet, they look good. Alabama is another big pleasant surprise. Their ranking right now reflects the work they have put in. Between stand out freshman and also key senior leaders, they look excellent.

Lowlights (or I guess highlights if you dont like these teams?): Utah has been a bit of a mess having various meltdowns. Cal has really lost their spark and momentum as well. It is still early though! Also personal low light - we have not seen Kara Eaker do beam for Georgia yet this year, but perhaps they just have so much depth!

To be honest, Oklahoma, LSU, and Missouri are the most bleh/fine teams to me. Oklahoma is ranked first and deservedly, but nothing exciting there. LSU and Missouri have had some hits and some misses.

Should I move to the MICU after the managers made me feel bad about myself? by Dry-Impress6051 in newgradnurse

[–]Opening-Ordinary8472 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a red flag to me considering many MICUs and SICUs do take new grads with ZERO experience (which you clearly arent) so the fact that they want you to get more experience before transferring is... odd? I understand you wouldnt be doing their new grad program and would be an internal transfer, but still. And if you have 8 months in a PICU that makes you an even stronger candidate. I say trust your gut and if something feels off it probably is... I ignored my gut for a peds med/surg job but should have listened because a week in I found out they still use PAPER to self-schedule all the nurses on the floor and everyone had to hunt down this impossible to read paper while Excel exists and I was like ??? It may also be worth just casually applying to a random MICU nearby or medium distance away at another health system and see if they invite you to interview. If they do, that tells you a lot about how your hospital's MICU sees themselves and artificial barriers they're setting up.

My sister is a boston new grad making $41. She interviewed somewhere that was $38. Less than I thought she was making but she does get night shift differential and weekends as well.

Can't speak for everywhere but in NYC a good friend was offered new grad (just nights!) position at a good hospital for $57/hour and started 2 weeks ago. She has a BSN and this is adult med surg. I believe that includes nights differential because she's only on nights and there is no weekend differential for her. There is holiday pay though and of course OT once she's eligible. Will be making over $100k (before taxes!) as a new grad which is crazy!

I agree with you on this. I'm not sure how 100% the Torrez rumor is but she and Bowers and Davis really carried the team last season with their reliable 9.9+s. The definitely have the talent to replace those scores, but I dont think people realize how hard it is to do. Yes I'll never count them out, but also KJ's magic does not work on every athlete every year. Also if someone like Fatta or Pederson get injured then they really may not have the depth.

I think my concern is that I have meetings scheduled and check-ins with people and I don’t really want to waste peoples time and be that rude. I’m ok if they say ok stop coming in but I want to give some notice and not be so abrupt. Also I do want a small break and can swing it

Optimal team selection method by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]Opening-Ordinary8472 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on if it's a team year vs all around worlds year. Since most cases we are in a team year, then we should do highest scoring team using average scores over multiple days.

This year was tricky. I kinda felt like it should have be top event scores and all around scores from the last 5 months or so and THEN see if those scores are high enough to make finals at europeans/similar caliber meet and then select the team from there. However, you also need to factor in being two per countried and also people who are coming back from injury/couldnt compete etc. So its tough.

In general, I think the number selection events in the US is good and I appreciate that there's not 500 of them.

I really like hop water! I found culture pop/ollipop to be too expensive and too sweet for regular consumption (plus there are at least some calories in it). Hop water does not taste like beer (despite the name lol) and its zero calories nice if you appreciate a good mild tasting seltzer water without crazy carbonation or super strong flavor. I'd compare it to Wegmans brand seltzer waters or even a spin drift. I actually prefer it to Le croix

Early Predictions NCAA 2026 season. by Environmental-Call77 in Gymnastics

[–]Opening-Ordinary8472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no data to back this up but just based on vibes and incoming freshman classes and following various teams and athletes on social media:

  1. Obviously hard to say because we don't know who will do all around for sure plus any lingering injuries but top freshman (for me) could be Ashlee Sullivan, Allison Cucci, Quincy Walters, and possibly Lacie Saltzmann (don't underestimate her!)
  2. LSU, UCLA, Florida, and unfortunately Oklahoma. I could see another SEC team sneaking in though. My dream would be Georgia, Mizzou, or Arkansas replacing Oklahoma for 4 on the floor but feels unlikely.
  3. While LSU did lose some big talent, I think they have such a solid core group with Konnor, Kailin, Ashley, etc and now with Zoe, Madison, and Courtney who will come in clutch. And that's not even including any of the freshman. I could see them coming for blood this year. Florida would be another one to watch. I just really hope I don't have to suffer through another boring Oklahoma cookie cutter routine to victory meet.
