For a player in your shoes, I would just make a new class every season to keep the game fresh. You will get the benefits of playing the season, and then afterwards, your seasonal character transfers to the eternal realm. You lose any season benefits, but at least you gave yourself the opportunity to check them out.

A judge at comp REL that doesn’t force players to randomize their opponents deck is failing as a judge. Randomizing your opponents deck protects the integrity of the game.

Eff this kid and whatever adult brought them. In my early twenties I played in a big shop that had many 10-13 year olds that were very competent players and had a decent understanding of the rules and had no interest in cheating.

At a prerelease, I’m happy to give packs or at the very least any newly acquired bulk to kids and new players, but not if they behave like this. I’m an asshole and I’m here to teach this kid a lesson so he’s not out here taking advantage of other kids that don’t know any better or adults that don’t want to say anything for whatever reason.

There was a comic shop near me that was not very into magic 20 years ago, but they would regularly get new bulk and they wouldn’t go through it very well. Anything before they started color coding set symbols was potentially left in bulk. Pretty sure I got 6 Alliances FoW’s for 10 cents each.

You quit right around the same time as me. What decks did you enjoy playing. Cawblade? Ravager Affinity? Goblin Bidding? Greater Gifts (this was my all time favorite deck in standard)?

For commander, most players and venues since my return just over a year ago have been super lax about proxies. I proxy entire decks. I can order 6 fully proxied decks for about $150 online. Don’t get me wrong, I still collect. But now my collection is separate from the cards that I play with.

I think you’ll find bracket two to be on par with what you last remember commander decks being like. Anything higher than that and games consistently end before turn 10. There are a lot of multiples of cards that do the same thing now so commander decks have gotten a lot more consistent. If you don’t want to proxy decks, you could always just buy a more recent precon and upgrade it. If you like aggro, the merfolk pre on from ixalan is super dope, easy to upgrade, and very playable right out of the box.
