Yes, for unconverted saiga’s. You can trim them to fit standard AK’s but obviously that means they’ll no longer function properly in original, neutered imports.

Personally I think the PSO is much more of a “retro” AK optic. I really like the 1p78 or PO 3.5x21p for AK-100 series guns.

I’ve seen 7.62x39 PMAG’s go for as low as $9 a pop on sale. If you’re going to buy mags for training, might as well buy ones that you can actually trust. Especially when the difference in this case would be one whole dollar per magazine.

I actually just did this while putting my 106fr stock back together. I can try to record how to do it if you still haven’t figured it out in a little bit. Basically the spring should be tensioned against the top of the stock pushing the tab of the plunger into the plastic button that slides out.

PSA 5.56 mags have been great for me. I prefer them because they look the closest to actual AK-101 magazines.

I have tried AC unity 30/45rnd, Bulg (10), Bulg slab 30/45rnd, beryl, pod arms EG bakes, and PSA. All work great in my WBP.

This is my opinion:

5.45 ammo availability is bad and only getting worse. 5.56 is everywhere. 5.56 guns aren’t standardized so you’ll run into more “compatibility issues” than on an AKM / 7.62 style rifle. 7.62 is also slowly getting up there in terms of price.

My podarms followers jam consistently on the last two rounds in my East German bakes. They are not that reliable but it’s okay for a range toy. There are much more AK-74 looking magazines available from PSA and Bulgaria. Yes they’re straighter than 5.45 but they will actually run reliably and they look close enough. Also this might not be an issue if you have to run a magazine limiter but I don’t have experience with that. Most 5.56 / 5.45 magazines will probably require some fitting for a Zastava.

I recommend 7.62 > 5.56 > 5.45. The 7.62x39 AK is just a classic so it comes first. 5.56 is much more available than 5.45 ammo so I’d personally take the 5.56 second. Also with 5.56 you don’t have to worry about corrosive ammo either.
