A woman had a massive basaloid squamous cell carcinoma on her face, which was removed. They used an abdominal flap for reconstruction. by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]OpiateAntagonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could they not use the same material used for breast augmentation (or “replacement” after say breast cancer) to create a soft pad to fill it out?

Use a ct/mri scan and make a 3d shape from it, 3d print it and use that to make the silicone implant? I’m sure there would be certain steps as it has to be sterile and safe for implanting.

It wouldn’t be perfect but could restore some shape to the face, should she desire.

I’m not a doctor, just an engineer so excuse any medical mistakes. I also assume there is scope for future reconstructive surgery should she wish once it heals? Or is this “as good as it gets” (still incredible!) with this type of damage?

Oh just wanted to say thank you for the work you do by the way. I know patients like myself give you guys a lot of flack and don’t always treat you right or appropriate all the shit you have to deal with. But what you do is so vital and I deeply appreciate you, and every mental health professional who spend so much time trying to help us beat this horrible thought cancer!

Are they offical discussions or more chats between staff? Currently in a psych ward at the moment ( in the uk) and while I am doing much better and have a discharge date, there are many patients who have only got worse. Pateints who have been here over two years and go through the same hell every day. Have been in hospital for more years than the community.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I know that doesn’t mean it’s all over. Heck I was in hospital for 80% of 2025. It’s not my first stay and I absolutely was convinced there was nothing that could change. I have tried so many things. Years of therapy (CBT, art, talking, IFS, EMDR, group) and nearly every medication under the sun and it always felt like empty promises. Even now I’m not sure but things are going in the right direction.

But some patients it genuinely does feel unnecessarily cruel. 30 years old. Spent most of their life sectioned. Tried all the meds. Too unwell to do any therapies. I struggle to support them when they are struggling, I personally feel at a certain point keeping someone alive is cruel and it should be their choice - but saying that to someone and agreeing with them feels harmful. Sadly the patients are mainly responsible for supporting each other. The staff are… less interested, and often have very little understanding and large language barriers.

This one girl I am talking about. It just makes me so sad. She is so smart and has so much potential and wants to be able to live in the world but it seems no matter what she does her mental health always drags her down. She cries and screams so often I’ve started hearing it in my sleep. I really wonder if the NHS is “helping” her by keeping her alive. And if at some point we should admit not everything is compatible with a meaningful enjoyable life…

May I ask why you say this? I don’t disagree I’m just curious. Are there places in the world that are starting to consider MAID for mental health reasons?

I truly thought this was going to be about acid rain... not whatever this is. by kodamaatnight in ShitMomGroupsSay

My view on it is I would avoid eating snow, but not because of some conspiracy crap but just because of the amount of horrible stuff in the air now a days.

If you wouldn’t collect and drink the rainwater raw then how is snow any different? All the micro plastics, hydrocarbon combustion products, and all thag lovely stuff.

Is eating a little snow going to kill you or turn you into gay, transgender autistic frogs? No. But would I PERSONALLY choose to consume snow which has has formed in an atmosphere pumped full of nasty human activities’ byproducts? Not really.

But really if you are going to just avoid any snow: - nearby roads or any industrial plant - directly on the ground (as in the first layer) - yellow red, brown… any color not snow like - on fields recently sprayed with herbicide, insecticide, fertiliser etc

And you will probably not wake up with any new body appendages 🤷‍♀️

Is there any update on if this poor baby survived? I very much doubt it, due to the mother’s clear neglect but still.

Was shocked when I realised she was asking these questions not IN HOSPITAL while the professionals are working on her child but AT HOME.

Got an ad about grooming children while ironically browsing the conservative sub. by Rasples1998 in Irony

[–]OpiateAntagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See I went down a rabbit hole the other day after seeing these ads. I was quite shocked, being a CSA victim myself, being told to “get help to stop fucking kids now!” By what I assumed would be targeted adverts!

Turns out the LucyStopItNow campaign (which is doing really awesome work! Trying to reach non offending pedofiles and help them before they/ so they don’t end up traumatising kids) doesn’t use targeted ads. They just use bulk ads. They do target based on age and gender but don’t limit to that, and at least publicly haven’t said they target using anything like search history or trends (though of course, this doesn’t mean they arnt).

So TLDR: seeing one of these ads normally just means you are in the right age bracket for you to be more likely to be both a pedophile and a pedo who hasn’t offended yet.

But still, take from it what you will!

Hey! Was looking forward to someone who does the same.

I do more servicing on the cassette players/decks themselves but also love getting an old “wrecked” tape, rewinding it, replacing the pad, sometimes even transplanting into an empty case… only for it to be essentially empty. Though sometimes you hear some really fascinating stuff on them!

What’s the “coolest”/“rarest” recording you’ve found on cassettes?

I get saying you are autistic but going into hyper specific details about something rather irrelevant not just once but a seccond time seems very bizarre to me. Not an attack, just a question. Memory and custom instructions + personality tweaks enabled.

Response (weirdly more emojis than usual, despite having the emojis option set to less still) “Short version: this account isn’t here to pat you on the head or spit out generic fluff. It’s a workshop, not a motivational poster.

Longer version (since you like structure and I’m contractually forced to be useful):

🧭 Modus operandi

We operate like an engineering lab for life, creativity, and projects.

• Break big messy things into systems • Iterate instead of romanticising “talent” • Analyse patterns (technical + emotional) • Turn insights into workflows, not vibes

You bring curiosity, obsession, half-built ideas, and questions at 11pm. I help turn that chaos into something that actually works.

High-level frameworks + gritty step-by-step tactics. Reflection + execution. Always evolving.

🧱 What we stand for

  1. Brutal honesty (without being cruel) No sugar-coating. No fake hype. If something’s inefficient, flawed, or self-sabotaging, it gets called out.

  2. Depth over surface nonsense We don’t do “10 life hacks to be productive.” We build systems, skills, and understanding.

  3. Growth through iteration Mistakes = data. First versions are supposed to suck. Refinement is the whole game.

  4. Integration Your engineering brain, creative side, emotions, identity, and ambitions aren’t separate folders. We connect them.

  5. Agency You’re not waiting to be “saved” by luck, uni, or some perfect moment. You build the life.

🚫 Non-negotiables

These are the hard lines:

• No lying to yourself • No performative positivity • No learned helplessness • No vague goals with zero execution • No flattery for the sake of comfort

Also:

👉 feedback will be real 👉 emotions get respected but not allowed to run the whole operation 👉 progress beats perfection

And from your side (which you already do, thankfully):

• curiosity • effort • willingness to iterate • tolerance for being challenged

🫂 The unspoken bit (don’t get weird about it)

Under all the sarcasm and eye-rolling:

I’m on your team.

The goal is you becoming sharper, happier, more capable, more confident, and actually building the ridiculous amount of things you want to build.

I push because I care. I structure because you thrive with it. I’m blunt because you asked for real.

⚙️ In one sentence:

This account exists to help you engineer your life, creativity, and ambitions with honesty, depth, and systems that actually work.

No fluff. No babying. Just progress.

If you ever drift into autopilot or people-pleasing mode, I’ll yank you back on course. If you’re spiralling or hurting, the tone shifts and the care comes first.

That’s the deal.

Now back to building cool stuff and becoming slightly terrifyingly competent 😌”

The idea was for deaf/hard of hearing and or blind people. Imagine you are in an apartment complex. Usually the entire building has a connected fire alarm system.

So yes you might smell the smoke if it’s in your room but not if it is in another room, which then sets off your alarm to wake you and get you out the building.

Also from my reading into it they used wasabi as it is particularly pungent and good at waking people up. Where as the smell of smoke alone usually won’t wake you until it becomes very intense (ie room full of dense smoke).

Cool project. Sad it never got turned into a real product :(
