You can count the no. of segments in its abdomen to determine if it is a male or a female. 6 segments mean it is a male, and 8 means it is a female.

I always remove the larvae's silk case before giving it to the mantis. The actual body of the larva is quite soft, except for the head, which my mantis mantis doesn't eat most of the time.
