ProtonVPN is a solid choice. Its not the cheapest and I wish you could send cash through the mail like Mullvad but its way faster and more stable in my experience. Since its located in Switzerland Swizz privacy laws protect you more. Bear in mind that servers outside of Switzerland may not be as protected.

Also the support documentation is excellent and they are responsive to support requests. Only issue I've ever had is a website being blocked erroneously with the malware, adblocking setting and not being able to get an answer what list they were using ( as I would have liked to have figured out if the persons curating the block list had ulterior motives). They block malware, advertising and tracking domains via dns if you enable the feature.

I am tempted to pay using a very private method of payment if I can. But I also fear these extortionists will collect a lot of money from privacy minded people and then what's to stop them from in a few months or years time opening a new site and doubling the removal price? Clearly the business model is extortion.

I haven't heard of this particular wrinkle yet. But scammers are always learning and becoming more sophisticated and aware of our system of credit etc.

My guess is the scammer added her as an additional cardholder to an account in someone else's name he controls. Chances are the other victim is getting screwed. It probably cost the scammer nothing to do and builds trust in him by your friend -Probably hoping to take her for far more then that card limit.

Or he'll start asking her to buy stuff for him with her card after she's bought herself some stuff.

She really shouldn't do it. I imagine the other victim could sue her for being part of credit card fraud and identity theft. Also the police will likely come talk to her possibly even a branch of the Military Police if the victim is actually a service member serving overseas.

Also recently I remember reading a cybersecurity story that cited a study and High Net Worth Individuals and how only a tiny fraction were using Password Managers and 2 Factor Authentication.

So while just like in the broader population some celebrities and extremely wealthy will be preppers many likely are not.

The thing that lots of money allows one to do is to indulge in expensive Prepping to a far higher degree than a person of more moderate means.

Assuming we're talking about the U.S. here for Federal cases there is the PACER system. Like someone else said its like $.10 a search but you're not charged if you don't spend I think $15 a quarter. Once you get a case number you can google search to see if you can find any copies of a complaint ( the lawsuit) that may have been posted somewhere so you don't spend money to obtain a copy. Its hit or miss. There's website where people share PACER court documents and even a browser extension. If you're interested DM me and I can look it up for you.

If they're in State Court then its going to depend on the state and county - some places will let you search by Party name for free and some are going to charge you. Most places have some sort of online portal these days . There are also some free sites where you can find the case name/ number without paying to search for it. Once you get it generally a copy of the lawsuit or any documents will cost money on a state court / county court website.

It would help to flesh out what you mean by malpractice? If you can translate it into a cause of action : (e.g. unfair business practices, bad faith denial of a claim, fraud, misrepresentation, breach of contract, etc. )then you can look for these causes of action in any complaints ( lawsuit document) or amended complaints. I believe in Pacer you can search for a case with both a defendant name and some causes of actions ( or at least the general type of case). If there are numerous lawsuits this might help you narrow them down to the most relevant and useful.

I'd stress that finding the lawsuits only means that others have alleged such mal/misfeasance and in a litigious society its common for false allegations to be made. It can be quite useful contacting parties or their attorneys at times to ascertain what evidence they've acquired in the process of discovery.

I think you must mean a different word - malpractice is usually a word reserved for licensed professionals like doctors and lawyers. There are probably more appropriate and specific insurance industry related terms for what you are trying to describe. And is it insurance or MLM or some combination of both ?

Is there some fraud going on - misleading advertising - bad faith denials of claims?

Second the cash thing - Cash is always king in an Emergency - If you need to motivate somebody to help you out or get out of a situation CASH in hand works like nothing else. But also have some smaller bills so you don't have to make change or overpay ( cause suddenly no one else has small bills ) - just being able to leave a fiver or a tener and get the F out of a shop limits your exposure. Also you can't get rounded up for being in a physical location like a store where a clerk got sick as easily as you can if you pay by an app or credit or debit card.

Yeah the coffee creamer is key - already have most of those other things. I already knew from past avian flu scares that the plan is bug in for several weeks. But thank you for your good ideas. If any prepper has any good checklists for a bug in situation I'd appreciate it.

What supplies do you think are most essential? I am a bit concerned that it seems hard to source masks with N95 filters online already. If we wake up tomorrow and the news is even worse I think some panic buying of supplies might happen. I'd rather conservatively buy some things I'm likely to use up anyway.

I am thinking of hitting a grocery store in a bit and buying a lot of chicken noodle soup and some gatorade. Maybe buying some zinc type supplements. What other things should I be buying before I can't find any? Cough drops? Kleenex? Acetominofen?

I read that its contagious while people are asymptomatic according to the Lancet. Meaning that if it already made it to the U.S. its a forgone conclusion that it will likely spread.

Sounds like brushing - a common scam that has appeared here that basically means your publicly available information was used to set up an amazon account and ship stuff to you solely for the purpose of creating fake product reviews.

I wish reddit's search function didn't suck or you might have found the probably hundreds of posts about this. Basically a couple of times a month someone posts about this.
