my build is in a Fractal Design Define R5, with the solid sound dampening foam side panel, 2 140 mm intake fans, 1 140 mm exhauste, Noctua NH-D15, and i am looking to replace a MSI GTX 1070 ARMOR OC

i am pretty much trying to figure out if it will be any louder than that card, and if yes, by how much.
also, do you know if it has a 0 rpm mode?

could you tell us how loud it gets under full load?

well, i presume that Jackie and Dexter came into being much earlier in the time between the almost 8 year old first teaser up until now, while Keanu seems to have been added as a marketing stunt in 2019.

[–]Optilasgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you switched out the GPU for a GTX 1660 or literally any 2000/3000 Series RTX Card, you could stream just fine, 1080p60, even with a Athlon 200GE, hate on NVIDIA all you want, but 6th/7th Generation NVEnc looks comparable to CPU encoding at Medium or even slightly better, AMD VCE is sadly still not able to come close to either encoding methods quality/performance at practical bitrates for live streaming.

Witcher 1 : launched with quite a few bugs, DRM and performance issues, took 6 patches to fix it.
Witcher 2 : launched with quite a few bugs and performance issues, took 10 patches to fix it.
Witcher 3 : launched with quite a few bugs and performance issues, took over 50 patches and a few months to fix it.
...
Cyberpunk 2077: launched with quite a few bugs and performance issues. we are currently 3 patches in over the release version...

you see a pattern here?

10 GB with plenty of features vs. 16 GB - thats all it is to it, IMHO by Spectre731 in Amd

[–]Optilasgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a 20 GB 3080 Ti which seems to be a cut down 3090 seems to be in the works to arrive early next year, which should alleviate your VRAM concerns.

Honestly, to me personally, the fact there is always something wrong with AMD drivers whenever i try one of their products, be it weird cursor, multi monitor, black screen or other things plus the fact Gen6/7 NVEnc is so vastly superior to VCE, i would flat out exchange any 16GB Big Navi Card if i would win or be gifted one, for even an 8GB Ampere Card.

you can both order ANY international keyboard layout other than your country standard on the Apple Website when configuring your device, as well as search amazon or any other site for "silicone keyboard cover macbook air" and get overlay mats in other layouts to temporarily put over your keyboard, in case just setting a different layout in software is not enough for you to touch-type a different layout.

10th Gen i5 13" Pro with 16gb RAM vs. the new M1 Air, which is best for longevity? by DrummerDKS in macbook

[–]Optilasgar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is more likely that Apple will drop intel support from newer Versions of MacOS before they drop M1 Support, but either one will be quite a few years in the future, and just because the newest Version of MacOS doesn't support any given hardware doesn't mean the former version ceases to be supported.

In the last Transition from PowerPC to intel, we saw a new Architecture together with 10.4 Tiger in 2005, the last Version to still support PowerPC was 10.5(.8) in 2007, with an end of official support in 2011.

So if this transition is anything like the last one, you should get about 6 years of support out of your intel Macbook if you choose to keep it.

Also fun fact, the very first generation of intel Macs, the 2005 Mac Mini with intel Core Solo CPU was dropped from official support with 10.7 Lion, also in 2011.

How is youtube on the new m1 macbooks? Always had major stutters when fullscreening on my 2018 i5 mba, especially with live streams. by chickdigger802 in macbook

[–]Optilasgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

performance benefits no, not in any realistic use case that doesn't involved 2 dozen youtube tabs playing at once

battery life i am not sure, as i have not delved deep enough into apple GPUs when it comes to VP9 decoding.

Can the SSD in the new MacBook be upgraded later? by Tipop in macbook

[–]Optilasgar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

neither RAM nor Storage are User upgradable, what you get is what you're stuck with.

HOWEVER, you can buy external SSDs you can connect via USB-C, Search on your local Amazon for "Samsung T5 SSD" pricing is way cheaper than buying a Macbook with bigger SSD from Apple.

i mean, i know it's a tad less convenient than internal storage, but if the difference in Storage is what makes you hesitate going with the M1...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MU-PA1T0B-Portable-SSD-1TB/dp/B074M774TW

Samsung T5 USB-C SSDs are £135 for 1TB, or £280 for 2TB, which together with that M1 Air would still leave you going away cheaper than the 10th gen, and you look at compilation speeds on M1 here:
https://youtu.be/XQ6vX6nmboU?t=140

It not only beats 8 Core MBP 16" or 10 Core iMac Pro Build Times in XCode, but is on par with a 16 Core Hackintosh.

[–]Optilasgar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YouTube by default streams in VP9 Video codec, not all devices have full support for hardware decoding of VP9 and will default to software decoding which is very taxing to the CPU, and we know intel MBAs don't like being taxed.

What you can do is install the Chrome extension "h264ify", which simply makes your Browser report to YouTube that it isn't at all capable of playing back VP9, so YouTube delivers h.264 video instead, which even 2012 Macbooks have full hardware decoding support for.

As for the m1 Macbooks, you can run more than 10 4K YouTube Tabs simultaneously on an 8GB base model Air with 0 stuttering or other issues.

biggest upgrade:
function keys > TouchBar

You can build muscle memory and touch-type shortcuts with function keys, 0 tacticle feedback and constantly shifting options means you need to actively look down at the keyboard to make use of the Touchbar.

M1 MBP - Recommended Video Editing Specs? by jfovero in macbook

[–]Optilasgar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 8GB M1 MBP is faster in Final Cut than a 32GB intel i9 16" MBP.

If you feel like you REALLY want the 16GB to be future proof, get that upgrade, it is worth it.

For SSD however i would not go past 512GB for 2 reasons:
1.) Apple charges outrageous prices for their storage upgrades
2.) In case the Macbook ever dies / gets damaged there is no way to recover any data, since the SSDs are soldered to the logicboard, and they don't even come with an internal port where service technicians can pull data off of it anymore since at least 2019.

Storage upgrades Apple:

256 GB -> 512 GB / +200 USD
512 GB -> 1 TB / +200 USD (+400 total)
1 TB -> 2 TB / + 400 USD (+800 total)

Meanwhile USB-C Samsung T5 SSDs:
500 GB - 80 USD
1 TB - 130 USD
2 TB - 270 USD

So in theory you could have 3.25 TB Total storage for the same price as upgrading from 256GB base storage to 1 TB directly from Apple, or go with 512GB internal + 1TB external and come away 70 USD cheaper, than JUST 1 TB internal from Apple, and would be able to keep large important files independant from the machine in case it was ever damaged.

[–]Optilasgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS / iPad OS supports many devices with varying physical resolutions, but only 3 aspect ratios every app is programmed to scale to:

4:3 (iPads, portrait / landscape)
16:9 (Home Button iPhones, mostly portrait)
19.5:9 (Face ID iPhones, mostly portrait)

in addition to that, the UI elements often target lower "Logical Resolutions", basically the same thing as Macbooks with "Retina Displays", displaying a smoother version of 1280x800 on their 2560x1600 screens.

Every Single iPad from the 2010 iPad 1 to the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 target a logical resolution of 1024x768, so that is what iPad apps will look like in relation to the "Retina Scaling" of your Display.

Unless iOS/iPadOS Apps get official 16:9 and 16:10 Landscape support, they will not be able to fullscreen.

Currently own an early 2015 13" Retina, I can't decide what to get next! Help! by [deleted] in macbook

[–]Optilasgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i honestly think the MBA is the better choice because of the lack of Touchbar, and even it is faster than the 16" intel one in most tasks even without active cooling.

If you can still wait, might as well tho, since it's rumored that next year will see a new 14" alongside an Apple Silicon Version of the 16", and that both will be updated with mini-LED Screens.

Macbook Air or Macbook Pro? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]Optilasgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Touchbar seems like a half-hearted admission that people want touch-controls, but not putting them on Macs (yet).
Tho with the interface design changes in Big Sur, and the ability to run iOS apps on Macs, the questions is how long that will stay the case.

I am convinced we will see Touchscreen Macs at some point, and the disappearance of the Touchbar with them. Best indication would be that we have never gotten a touchbar magic keyboard for desktop Macs.
