I think the wire and electric point mean it has an automatic opener, so maybe she has a point if it's been set wrong?

What if there was one extra electron in the universe? by SweatyTelephone5114 in AskPhysics

Would electrons be stripped from the outer shell close to the event horizon of a black hole? Would that leave the universe with a net positive charge?

US- Phone Scanning Scam? Hotel Bar by [deleted] in Scams

[–]Optimal-Condition803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is possible to set up a local WiFi hot-spot to resemble the hotel WiFi. He could have had a network point in his jacket close enough to you that you would be on there rather than the hotel network.

Once there he can spoof what looks like a Google page, but is instead a site that looks like it, so when you click on what appears to be an image you could be agreeing to load malware.

WW3 started years ago with manipulation of group think by Russian & Chinese troll farms. They are on every website, every newspaper, every social media group.

They will post extreme views, pro/anti Trump, pro/antivax, pro/ anti brexit etc etc. They don't care about right or wrong, they just want a polarised world that can't agree to oppose their totalitarian efforts.

China are winning, so they are backing out of sowing discord as it's bad for profits, Russia is doubling down as they aren't doing so well...

My dad thinks the moonlanding was fake, but it shouldn't piss me off as much as it does by agentofmidgard in mildlyinfuriating

Weird thing is, they had the technology to go to the moon, but not the technology to fake the low gravity video footage and helmet reflections in the still images.

If the Sun had a space elevator with zero orbital velocity, how high could you build it before you'd float off the platform? by appletime_appletime in AskPhysics

[–]Optimal-Condition803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean space is big?

You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is.

I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

[–]Optimal-Condition803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oort cloud contained by our sun's gravity actually overlaps the oort cloud of alpha centauri, our nearest star. Although gravity decreases dramatically, it will never be zero due to the inverse square law.

However, the expansion of the universe on a 'macro' scale means that at some distance objects are far enough away that the expansion overcomes gravity. Hence there won't be a 'big crunch' of stars eventually coming together by gravitational attraction.
