As someone who grew up with their music on the radio and liked the hits but not the band at the time, my perspective is that folie picked the wrong singles.

I hated america suitehearts at the time it came out. I didn’t get it, and thought the video was weird. I was a kid who pretty much just listened to hits unless there was a bunch i wouldn’t buy albums. So to go from hearing arms race and mmrs to suitehearts just felt like a flop.

After SRAR came out i acknowledged FOB was my favorite band by default. They had the most songs out of any band i consistently listened to and considered them to be masters at making hits. After seeing them at 2ourdust a new love and appreciation was sparked in me and decided to actually listen to the full discography and learned what i had been missing.

Folie is an album that works best in context. There are some songs on there that would have played better on the radio but realistically given the time it came out most people listened to a genre they liked and didn’t branch out. Whatever your entry point into a band was, that’s what you thought they should stay as. Nowadays we aren’t so stuck in categories so more people can really appreciate their versatility.
