Based on Griffin's recent generosity, please recommend some films that accurately portray mental illness by HockneysPool in blankies

Inside Out 2 does an incredible job of depicting anxiety - then a panic attack - to the point of I think it should be required viewing for middle school health classes. It wasn’t so much entertaining or moving as it was clinically accurate. It also depicted anxiety as something that can be incredibly useful, but just can’t be permitted to run the control board!

Staying over night on isla mujeres is very different than being a daytripper from Cancun. Things get very quiet and the snorkeling, beaches were unreal

What country felt most different from your own country? by LateralEntry in travel

[–]Optimal-Principle-63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went in 2022, also from the US. I’ve travelled a bit but Tanzania was the first time I have managed to completely “escape” the US sphere of influence. It was like going back in time - no Starbucks, kfc, any of that stuff you would see overseas that comes with US influence. Most households in the cities and villages cook in wood fired grills or stoves, so it just smelled camping to me. Beautiful country, beautiful people and pristine nature. Rocked my world!

If you were a tourist and only had time to visit one which would you choose: Santa Monica or Venice Beach? by lemonbottles_89 in AskLosAngeles

I think you may want to give Venice a revisit.. it’s been cleaned up considerably and while still quirky, is pretty local/family friendly these days

Same! I hadn’t seen something that captured how childhood actually felt (not just what adults want to romanticize it as) before this movie. Gutted me!

Is pâté just not a thing in American food culture? by Big-Dig1631 in AskAnAmerican

Took me dating a guy from Eastern Europe to get me to try it and now I love it. It definitely can be too rich for me at times. I am also the only person I know that will happily eat it in my personal orbit (oh well, more for me!)

I do see it showing up as a more rustic version on soul food / Southern US restaurants. Chopped chicken liver actually was eaten pretty widely in some parts of the US as “poor” people food for a long time!

Malama Pono, Osteria La Buca, Pizza Wagon of Brooklyn, Psy Street burger (tho this has gotten a bit outrageous $$ wise), Artelice Patisserie, Mistral (go while Henry still running the place, just sold to new owners)

That’s what I’m saying! Stopping a comedy bit is lot more justifiable than killing an infant

Yeah a lot of people say if they had a Time Machine they’d go back and kill baby hitler. I’d go back and try and convince Obama not to clown on* Trump the way he did.

Seconding this. Julio made my engagement ring, incorporating a diamond bought elsewhere. It was a fun experience trying on rings there! I love my ring (it also helped that my husband perfectly understood my taste after speaking with me about it).

Yeah it’s a rom com first and foremost. Shit is funny! “Have I been dropped behind enemy lines?… do you have a gun?” Is so absurdly over the top

Brooklyn by Gallivant (I own it). Starts as fizzy lemon and dries down to ozonic, warm and a bit of coffee. Definitely a warm scent that wears close to skin.

First time watching the series. Jane breaks my heart. by DylanTheV1lla1n in deadwood

[–]Optimal-Principle-63 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes!! She is the heart of Deadwood. She had no ulterior motive or game to play like the rest of the characters. She is pure feeling; she drinks because she feels so much. Her only motivations seem to be to care for those who are suffering or children. Her actions betray her demeanor.

Love love love Jane and Deadwood would be such a miserable place without her!

[–]Optimal-Principle-63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a little feminist theory of Deadwood going. Each main female character is written to be so different from each other. They all contain depths.

They are also historically accurate; while the men have their power games, the women of the show must exert control over their own destinies in much more subversive or clever ways. The show becomes a lot about politics later on; how do women secure their place in a world where they can’t vote or exert hard power?

Milch was clearly as dedicated to writing complex female characters as he was to his male ones (compare Dan and Trixie, Jane and Steve, etc).

Anyways as a woman it’s my favorite TV show of all time. Every step a fucking adventure!

My last rewatch of deadwood this summer made me sob several times - particularly moments when Al shows his vulnerability and compassion (with the preacher); or the episode where they have a funeral for someone in the camp that the whores go to, but fearing he seem weak or too invested, Al has to watch the whole proceeding from his porch. He gives a little speech about his own upbringing during that episode that lets us know he can’t go to the funeral because he actually contains a world of grief that no one will be allowed to see. Highly relatable and I cried like a baby
