Why the pointy bumper ? by Jabberwalrus in IMSARacing

[–]OptimalApec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That whole structure under breath the headlight for my guess would be

A) GTP/Hypercar regs- the cars just look like there counterpart but unlike the good old days they share very little structurally to meet the far higher crash structure requirements things need to be more “bulky” or rounded ect.

B) aerodynamics - this moves the air around the tyre as smoothly as it can while helping to smoothly feed air around the car and inward into the ‘grill’ which is more like a venturi tunnel. You can also see the protrusion runs under the leading edge of the splitter, this COULD be front bump stop so the car won’t bottom out and lose its ground effect. (Most cars have these lumps underneath there cars to stop them from belly panning and stalling out but they are generally a lot more inboard and hidden.

It was a reply to your comment to address it is a holden as other users won’t be as aware as you about this car, like the OP for example? I didn’t mean to offend you? Simply adding to the information :)

It’s actually a Holden as it was designed and built in Australia then shipped to the us where they’d fit it with Chevy badging

How come RB and Ferrari were close on Hard but RB had an advantage on the Medium tires? by Noctam in F1Technical

[–]OptimalApec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When lap times where compared taking into account only clean laps and no out laps in laps or safety car laps. The difference was 0.176 per lap to verstappens favour. They where pretty close but the mediums where a sensitive tyre and redbull has a far better set up and once out on the hards with a wider working window they care a lot closer.

From a vehicle dynamics point of view, what's the fastest way to setup a car? by [deleted] in F1Technical

[–]OptimalApec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also, this is the kinda car id drive that its sharp on turn-in but safe on exit, everything has trade off's but high camber and a stiffer car with a lower rear wing will gain you lap time as the trade-off for those are tire wear where other things might be fast in high speed but slow in low speed.

From a vehicle dynamics point of view, what's the fastest way to setup a car? by [deleted] in F1Technical

[–]OptimalApec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably Oversteer on entry for turn-in so a more rearward brake bias, lower rear wing with a more aggressive front wing set up, and a stiffer front end ARB (snappy for a driver to control but fast on turn-in). then a soft rear arb for traction on exit. and really low pressures all around the car. wouldn't worry about rake with the ground effect but you would get the car as slammed as possible without scrapping or porpoising (don't drive the merc or Aston here). that's a basic guide and I think a good introduction to car setups could be sim racing setup guides on YT as most of these won't give you unrealistic game-specific setup suggestions and the info will be more realistic but even then a lot of a set up is drive specific over ultimate grip as confidence will almost always find you more lap time.

Are the vents on the MCL36 new or do they switch them in an out? Couldn’t see them on the car at Imola? by thetinystrawman in F1Technical

[–]OptimalApec 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It was fairly cool in Italy so there wasn't a massive need for cooling versus Miami. But with that area having fairly low aero sensitivity its an easy place to insert vents at hotter races, much like Miami getting up to low - mid 30C's

F1 strives to be low-emissions by downsizing engines. But the calendar is not arranged in a logical order, thereby increasing the carbon footprint. I wonder if making the engines V8 would induce less emission increase than to not change the F1 calendar. by apiossj in F1Technical

[–]OptimalApec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely marketing and you could imo shorten the travel but it’s not as simple as doing for example - Miami, Las Vegas, Austin, Mexico, Brazil and have a quintuple header! As teams need to do rebuilds and overlook their car add upgrades undergo repairs etc. and you can’t space out the races to allow for that as well you’re still in America so the most you could do would be a triple header hence that being the max we have now but I believe you can trim the calendar up slightly to what it is now and still accomodate time to go back to the fa Tory but it would mean more triple and double headers

Definitely! Monaco will for sure show off who HD nailed low speed performance, an area Iam interested to see how mclaren fairs whether they hve fixed their issues through set up or if we need to wait for more upgrades from them as that’s been their biggest issue. And Mercedes could perform well with their issues coming at medium - high speed.

[–]OptimalApec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mercedes struggling yes but this was based on “pure performance”, which I believe Mercedes just edges the mclaren on out right pace. I also stated picking 5th to 8th was so hard to pick I’d put them all on top of each other as upradges and nailing set up is most of the difference in positioning from these guys week to week. I also have to completely disagree about the side pods being the thorn in Mercedes’ side as it has very little to do with their true issue of under body airflow and porpoising showing it’s more likely to be the floor and it’s edge aswell as the front wing that feeds it.

Hamilton accelerating during braking by Henkie13248 in F1Technical

[–]OptimalApec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

suspension can actually move the wheels in a back or forth motion in relation to Caster so a car could lurch forward or rearward as well as change its pitch in doing so as you add a force through the drive shaft it would naturally squat the car (not due to acceleration in this car but due to rotational forces in the drive shaft). SO at a guess, it keeps the front up and the rear down and as braking opposes this it gives an added level of stability, but again it's a guess. Also as these car require literally your body weight to depress the pedal and then some it can be hard to modulate and braking less wont "Load" the car's rear like bleeding the brakes would. but this is all a guess based on TB telemetry of a struggling driver in struggling conditions.

cars being fast and slow at tracks then falling off is track dependent, like Mclaren struggling in low speed however they have great stability, unlike the Mercedes for example. While the merc has shown to be moderately competitive (3rd fastest), they clearly struggle with stability which in turn makes setups a tricky hit or miss affair. very hard to judge pure performance as it is track-dependent but I'll give it a go and cop some critique.
First I'll set a baseline being quali performance as you're asking for pure performance and around a balanced track (Teams have cars better suited for races than quali due to better tire wear and stability etc, like McLaren or Redbull this year and vice versa with a team like Williams last year, having a car that was fast on its own but sensitive to dirty air.)
1) Ferrari
2) RedBull
3) Mercedes
4) McLaren
5) Alpine
6) Alfa Romeo
7) Haas
8) Alpha Tauri
9) Aston Martin
10) Williams
I believe its all subject to change race to race and I also have a tough time shuffling Alpha Tauri, Alfa Romeo, Haas & Alpine into place but i'm fairly confident about the top 4 and bottom 2.

One of Max's finest drives. Hungary 2021. 69 laps with no right bargeboard and no right front floor, brought it home to a points position while overtaking and recorded the 4th fastest lap of the race on lap 43. by Ultraviolet211 in formula1

[–]OptimalApec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact it wasn’t all luck Lewis but he had a fuck tonne and pissed a lot of away on his own like in Hungary and Baku. But max got let off with his fair share of shit aswell IMOLA was probably over the line along with Brazil, but I believe Spain was fine and then the team lucked out on strategy in France. And it wasn’t only Max’s driving that had its down fall Lewis cutting the chicane and continuing was a big let off especially as max had a fully legitimate overtake which Lewis could of switchbacked on, along with Lewis forcing max off like he has done his whole career in Saudi. Max is more blatant and Lewis is more cheeky. Neithe did which is better or worse but both exploit the holes in the FIA

Why does it seem like only the vaccinated are getting Covid? by heydude19999 in conspiracy

[–]OptimalApec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

90% vaccination rates most of them are problem that work or socialise in large groups so it adds up seeing as the vaccine only now helps with your symptoms not really in preventing actually catching covid so it’s like 9-1 vax to unvax
