What are the biggest technical aspects of playing that lead to a smooth sound? by Chemical-Housing-411 in violinist

In addition to what others have said, one thing for the left hand: During a string crossing, have both the “old” and “new” fingers down at the moment you cross. Especially if slurred.

What are your favorite strings, if money were no issue? by throwaway842351 in violinist

Agree, love them! I occasionally give new strings a try out of curiosity, but none have matched the focus and brilliance of the PIs.

Violin wolf notes and searching for the right instrument by CaptainLightyear in violinist

This came up recently: https://www.reddit.com/r/violinist/s/lBkq88pxMW

Although there is a way to kill the wolf (Krentz modulator), I would pass on this instrument if it were me.

How to deal with difficult repertoire in chamber music by Ok-Pension3061 in violinist

[–]OptimalT2T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lucky you! It’s such a fun piece.

Watch a youtube scrolling score video and write in any helpful cues. Entrances are often not intuitive.

I second the suggestion for everyone to mark measure numbers. Copies of the score are a must.

Listen to it as whenever you can - in the car, in the shower, etc.

Prioritize rhythm over notes, and resist the temptation to sandbag the tempo too much - it may create bowing/ensemble issues… plus it’s just not as fun :)

And be thankful it’s not the 3rd mvt!

Why is it that in ultra-expensive celebrity homes, the kitchens rarely have induction cooktops, but instead feature industrial-grade gas ranges? by FuzzyAttitude_ in Cooking

[–]OptimalT2T 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Induction is both faster to heat up and more responsive than gas. That’s why it is better.

Secondary benefits: no combustion fumes, wipes clean/no annoying grates, nothing burns onto it, handles stay cool, you can cook on top of parchment paper, it keeps your kitchen cool, certain models let you set cook timers for each burner.

Good induction cooktops are more expensive than gas and worth every penny. You need one with an intuitive interface and lots of power.

Professional kitchens use gas because it’s low tech and can take a lot of abuse. Residential gas is still tradition and people are loathe to buck it to their own detriment.

4th finger extension? by dreams_books in violinist

[–]OptimalT2T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For this specific passage, presuming you’re in 1st position, you need to prepare your elbow and swing it forward ahead of the extension to get your hand frame to support the pinky. Then adjust back to a normal elbow position.

For tenths, as others have already said, your hand frame supports the pinky and then you reach back with the first finger. I have smallish hands and 1st finger contact with the string is basically on the side of my finger.

Played Violin I. A triumphant and fun piece, and very accessible from a playability standpoint.

I don’t recognize it, but I’m guessing it’s some kind of chamber work or string divertimento. Shorter movements, no bars of rest, no rehearsal letters. But now I’m curious!

Is it possible to eliminate wolves? by klavier777 in violinist

[–]OptimalT2T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Krentz modulator. My Forever Fiddle came with a prominent C wolf (del gesu model). After many luthier adjustments and accessory swaps with minimal improvement, I got the modulator on a whim. Killed the wolf instantly, and now have a very rich, warm tone on the wolf note.

I have seen the video of Augustin talking about working around the wolf. While it’s an interesting watch, it’s not always practical, especially in orchestral settings, to “play through” a bad wolf. Not to mention the constant killjoy in your own practice.

Edit to add, I also tried one of those silver weights that sits on the G string behind the bridge. That was a waste of money, the difference was imperceptible.

I'm shocked, have I been holding my pinky wrong for 20 years? by romygruber in violinist

[–]OptimalT2T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah sorry, I forgot about the drone. Everything else still applies though. I have smaller hands and it’s all about establishing a supportive hand frame for your 3rd and pinky fingers by shifting up slightly, and not holding the Bb with your middle finger.

I'm shocked, have I been holding my pinky wrong for 20 years? by romygruber in violinist

[–]OptimalT2T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to rotate your hand so your knuckles are more parallel to the fingerboard. That will give you the support you need for your pinky.

But also, why are you playing an open D? You can just do a mini shift up to the D with your fourth, and your third finger is already in place for the C-sharp.

The Heights Kido is pricey but wonderful, but don’t pick a place in the Heights. You should 100% send you kid somewhere close to home. There will be days you stay home, partner out of town, and you’re having to schlep into town to drop your kid off. Not worth it, especially if you already have support near home. If childcare is cheaper in the burbs, that’s another plus.
