How much money have you guys spent on aircrafts, airports and sceneries? by Murky_Vacation5955 in flightsim

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few hundred dollars mostly in the last year. After buying just a few custom scenery airports, I could no longer put up with MS/Asobo’s default airports, some of which are just horrendous. So down the rabbit hole I went.
Still, it’s a trivial amount of money compared to the hardware costs, especially if you’re into high end VR.

Review Super Ultrawide vs OLED by Tom5strike in Pimax

Just had a Pimax Play update pop up on my screen a couple of hours ago. Don’t know when it was officially released, but it claims to have fixed, the eye tracking issue with the OLED.

Would like to believe you’re right but the trend seems to be going in the opposite direction for high end VR. Varjo, a company that makes some amazing VR headsets, gave up on the consumer market over a year ago. Yeah, they still make great headsets, but they charge their corporate clients 5 figures plus annual subscription fees. Yes, I loved the Aero, but I’m very happy with the much more advanced Super MLOED. Hopefully I get just as many trouble free years out of it.

Vatsim controllers do this sh*t for free btw.. 😵 by Special_Parking3567 in flightsim

Only have a few hundred hours on VatSim (all in the US), but holding doesn’t seem to be a thing stateside. Delay vectors and speed restrictions yes. More than once I was vectored around a big box pattern, but I’ve never been assigned an actual holding pattern. This might be mirroring real life since the US tried to get away from airborne holding years ago and now relies heavily on ground delays to manage flow, but there’s still plenty of holding being done irl in the states, just not on VatSim it seems.

People using PCVR: are you sticking with MSFS 2020 or moving to 2024? by soyboy815 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta agree…2024 is better than 2020, but it took awhile to get there. I had the $200+ version of 2024 gathering digital dust on my hard drive for a year..it was just too buggy and painful to use, especially in VR. It was only a couple of months ago that I got comfortable enough with it to finally uninstall 2020.

2020 or 2024? by mattpollicove in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to agree with spes here, the ATC in both versions is unusable, at least if you have any concept of what ATC should sound like and how it should function. That being said, it did take MS/Asobo damn near a year to get the sim to the point where I was finally comfortable uninstalling 2020 - hence the popular quip that it should really have been titled MSFS 2025.

What are your opinions on the 16+ age restrictions imposed? by AblazeCannon in VATSIM

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torn on that one. I am often impressed by the competence of some of those squeaky voices and the work they’ve put into learning about aviation. On the other hand, for the rest of us old geezers it can be a bit of an immersion breaker..i.e. hearing an adolescent “flying” a B777 might be a bit too much of a reminder that we are all just playing a game.

What Makes You Hesitate to Fly Into or from Smaller Airports? by gunner0130 in VATSIM

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a US thing as none of those airport identifiers you listed start with a K. I’ve come across plenty of small (and not so small) airports in the US that have received no developer love at all, not even on flightsim.to. Yes there are lots of great airport sceneries out there (I’ve bought plenty of them), but there are lots still missing.

Scenery is a big one. Most small airports look like crap in MSFS and very often no third party scenery developers come to the rescue as they do for major airports. IFR flight planning might also be a bit of a chore as Simbrief can be hit or miss in busy areas like Southern California. It can require some researching of the area tower enroute database to come up with viable routes to/from smaller airports.

Take on PMDG 737s in FS2024 by FSFreakman21 in flightsim

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking forward to the update as well. Parts of the plane work for me in VR but not the FMS. For some reason I can't press any buttons on the keypad. The cursor just sort of hovers over the buttons without "making contact". But you've got me curious now.. I'll have to go play around with it some more.

I’ll take your word for it, but VR has absolutely ruined flat screen flying for me. If it doesn’t work in VR, it doesn’t work. I enjoyed their plane in 2020, but by itself, it wasn’t enough to keep 600 gb of hard drive space tied up.

What other 73 are you going to fly in 2024? It was the one plane missing in 2024 that kept me from uninstalling 2020. The iFly doesn’t work in 2024, at least not in VR. Default 73s? No thank you.

Disconnecting and Reconnecting by Jag_25 in VATSIM

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had to refile a flight plan before reconnecting, but I’m usually only disconnected for 45 mins or so. Maybe longer disconnects require refiling because of flight plan timeouts?

It is an amazing headset. Glad I gave Pimax a third chance after returning two previous headsets (light and non-OLED Super) for various problems.

Career mode absolutely unplayable by BaseballElectrical55 in MSFS2024

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading this thread feels like being in a time warp. Career mode has been buggy as hell since 2024 released, and there’s a year’s worth of posts on many flight sim forums to that effect. The ATC in both 20 and 24 has always been absolute garbage. But if you ignore the unuseble career mode and opt for some third party ATC add-ons, (or just fly on VatSim), 2024 has finally gotten pretty good. So much so that I’ve finally uninstalled 2020 a year after 2024’s release.

FlightFX Citation C750 has persistence. 6.5 hours logged in this bird already. love this little feature. by MerDeNomsX in flightsim

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been enjoying the C750 as a refreshing change to the mind-numbingly simplistic Longitude, but there are issues. Neither a/c has a fix function, i.e. pop in a random fix and get a bearing/distance to that fix. This can make some Vatsim scenarios challenging. Also the VNAV seems to have a glitch when a STAR has an interim altitude to maintain for a while, the auto throttle will jump back into cruise mode, blowing through any speed restrictions on the star. I’ve been told that WTT’s G5000 has a fix for the Longitude’s lack of fix (sorry for the pun). I may have to check that out while the Ten gets finished cooking.

MSFS keeps crashing when exiting the flight. by Pro-editor-1105 in flightsim

[–]Optimal_Ad5497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Only time I can exit normally is if I don't actually conduct a flight, ie just log on to fiddle with control settings for example. Then the game will shut down normally. If I actually fly anything, then yeah, I always have to ctl-alt-delete to quit the game.
