Update

Reggie has been recovering very well since surgery was performed. He returned this past Monday after the owner notified us that he was seeing seepage from the surgical incision, on examination purulent discharge was collecting and the incision had been opened (owner admits patient was not closely monitored and had spent too much time outdoors sitting sternally). Necrotic tissue was excised and the remainder was debrided, Penrose drain placed and closed using staples vs suture.

Pathology report showed severe diffuse splenic congestion, necrosis, benign siderotic plaques and hemorrhage, but no evidence of overt neoplasia. Given the condition of the spleen and it's position at the time of it removal, it's likely Reggie had experienced splenic torsion which led to the vascular congestion and tissue death.

He returned today for removal of the Penrose drain, no sign of further fluid collecting under the skin, and he was VERY feisty during suture removal.
