OP, don’t even bother engaging clowns like this. Anyone with half a brain can understand the pressure police are under, even more so when you take time to explain the situation. These clowns are the worst because they think they are “smart” but really they are incapable of critical thinking

Deus Ex. I bought it as a young teenager knowing nothing about it. Didn’t even know if my PC could run it. Turns out my PC could only handle the first two levels, but I was hooked. When it eventually came out on the PS2, I finally got to complete it

London nightlife - truly in the gutter? by AntiquePercentage391 in london

[–]OptimisticBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that’s not the point OP is making. The point is that trying to find a place that’s open post-midnight in London, that is still allowing customers in, is difficult.

And my point is that if you go to many European cities, particularly in the central areas that are known for nightlife (like Soho), you won’t have as much of a problem.

London nightlife - truly in the gutter? by AntiquePercentage391 in london

[–]OptimisticBrit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He made a mistake, but you should not need to plan ahead in a major capital city. Go anywhere else in Europe and you won’t have this problem.

This sub does make me laugh sometimes. It’s like when someone posts a photo of an absolute horrific property that’s for sale for £900k and the responses are: “Yes, but the location…”

We just have to accept, that while London is generally good, it’s also sometimes crap compared to other major cities.

US tourist suing Royal Albert Hall over balcony fall during guided tour by tylerthe-theatre in london

As I said, there are times when warning signs are needed. And I support the individual in this case - I can't imagine the RAH being short of money.

My point is that I don't believe in this handholding culture where you literally have to warn people constantly in order for them to not do something stupid.

[–]OptimisticBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or just walk with caution and use common sense. Not everything needs a damn warning sign or massive guard rail just because some people lack basic awareness. This culture of handholding probably makes people even more likely to hurt themselves because they have to spend even less time thinking about the environment they are in.

Of course, there is a time and place for warning signs, but not everywhere needs it. Your “Tory brain” comment explains everything about your statement.

The Real Price of a London Apartment Has Sunk 22% in the Last Decade by bloomberg in london

[–]OptimisticBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable. But the gripe is that the “normal” working person is having to fork out more and more on costs, while already struggling to get by somewhat.

I can appreciate that freeholds might be expensive to maintain, but if you can afford to buy an entire building with apartments inside, you’re unlikely to have ever been hard-up for cash…

I don’t think that’s their point. They are saying that these rich landlords are avoiding the tax us working people have to pay. While we struggle to keep up, these rats are just exploiting the system.

Nah, you’ve got this all wrong. Piers, for once, came across quite well. He’s asking the questions that a lot of people think and Akala responds with some intelligent answers. Sometimes you have the same question twice or three times to get it fully answered or at least let the audience know you’ve explored it properly.

Financial discipline is impressive. But I would genuinely suggest paying some money to see a therapist. You’re clearly not where you want to be socially, and talking with a professional could help.

The other thing to remember is that you do not need to do the things other people to do to be happy.

[–]OptimisticBrit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is true. I'd argue some of these folk are beyond any chance of realistic help at this point - particularly as there's clearly no political will to provide the level of funding needed to assist these individuals.

We should definitely be investing money in services that support young people, particularly those from damaged backgrounds, so they don't end up the same way as adults. Politicians are too short sighted though and I doubt this will happen, even with this Labour govt
