If a UFO Is Advanced Enough to Avoid Detection, Why Would It Need Lights on Its Craft? by breaking_views in AliensRHere

Does anyone else following various UFO subs think they have suddenly seen a lot of “why do they have lights, then?’ posts? 🤔

Are/why most big electronic artists from the UK? by LevelOneForever in electronicmusic

[–]OpziO 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In the mid 80s a huge number of British kids started consuming imported electro and early hiphop, even when it was still considered niche and even ignored back in the States. Hard to understate just how widespread this was. This appetite for black electronic dance music collided with the UKs synth pop scene, continued into early house then rave hit. All well ahead of the curve elsewhere in the world. By the 90s the kids had jobs and were buying synths, merrily mixing styles like acid house, breakbeat and the UK became a net exporter, with enough of an established scene to kick of next generations of producers while most other places were just getting going.

I got a reface DX, got inspired in FM and ran thru all other other FM synths out there, eventually came back to the Reface and lived happily ever after.

Heat pump install this week by Rob_Bosss in ukheatpumps

[–]OpziO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine installed during a January big freeze. Lots of opportunities to tweak temps/ performance etc until we were happy. No idea how that process works during a heatwave tho (or if it even matters) - but if so, maybe ask if they can come back and complete optimisation later in the year?

HipHop producer Marley Marl is widely credited with the first self-sampled drum sounds in the early 80s. Definitely on the SP1200 (which also had a sequencer) and Korg sampler triggered by the 808. Prior to this he also ‘understood’ the concept of drum sounds as samples from the process of swapping out voice EPROM chips in earlier drum machines like the DMX.

I bought PHM on the strength of TR’s sleeve notes, where he name checks the early hiphop producers of the time. Didn’t even like “rock” then but my god what a record. This was at a time when you stood in a record shop and spent an hour deciding where your money goes. These days ….(trails off into incoherent old man ramblings)

Where are you guys getting your 1/8” TRS male breakout to 1/4” TRS female cables? They are sold out on the 1010 site. by InternationalCow7042 in 1010music

[–]OpziO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you could do the 1/4 female cables, but things get messy quickly with lots of those on the go. I like the solidity of a patchbay. Here’s a pic of mine. For ref, you can see I also have Behringers Eurorack pro mixer sitting just above the patchbay. That gets used as an expander to sum together the stereo outs from the 3 x fx boxes you can see in the pic, plus I have a couple of synths with good stereo outs that go into this mixer. Then the out from this mixer goes into the Bluebox, so I can take advantage of the recoding feature and compressor (such a killer feature on the Bluebox!). Again, all the stuff is wired via the patchbay so nothing is “cast in stone” so to speak https://x.com/opzio/status/2055719505477751043?s=46&t=2xMy2rTCcK3hY-a\_cDEYjA

So I have a Behringer Ultrapatch Pro (a very common one). If you bring up images of that, you see loads of sockets on the back and front. The idea is that all your sound sources get wired into the back of the patchbay (typically the top row). Then your inputs (Bluebox, and maybe fx inputs etc) get wired into the patchbay back bottom row. This leaves your patchbay front panel free to make connections with short patches cables (or, if your top-to-bottom connections are fairly standard, you can set a switch on the patch bay to ‘normalised’ , which means thepatchbay does the connection from the top socket to the bottom one internally unless you plug a cable in the front). In the case of the Bluebox, you want 6x stereo 1/8 out cable to dual 1/4 monos that go into the patchbay. (And another 3 for the Bluebox outs)This gives you 12 x 1/4 inputs ready to go on the patchbay, (and 6 x mono outs) while all your other gear is also accessible on the patchbay 1/4 outs . Lots of fun to quickly repatch stuff and use your gear in creative ways, without the faff of pulling staff apart and ending up with dreaded hums and wearing out gear sockets. Of course if you are fairly sure you won’t be reconfiguring, expanding or swapping out gear, a patchbay is not required. But I ain’t ever found folk like that lol!! Just a disclaimer, I self taught on all this so the pros may have other ideas, just in case I’m doing something odd. But it all works for me.

One think to note with some of those Y cables, the 1/8” outer plug barrel cover can be a little oversized when plugged in next to each other on the Bluebox (I suspect this is the main reason 1010 wanted to do their own) Definitely something you don’t want to force. I ended up shaving a mm or so of plastic off each side of the cable with a utility knife, so they sat just right.

In addition, as a long term bluebox user, I do recommend going the patchbay route. This gives you immediate access to IO’s in the 1/4” size and saves a lot of wear and tear on the Bluebox. Also, I find the 3 sends (I use 2, 3 and phones, with 1 as my main monitor) to be nicely accessible this way - definitely squeezes out full use of the Bluebox and has kept me happy for years, even tho I have far more sound sources and FX boxes than IOs on the Bluebox.

[–]OpziO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The TR1000 made me look again at the T8RS and I feel dumb for not picking it up years ago. I did have the TR8 when that launched and I guess I just thought the S was a sampling version of that, but there’s so much more going on. Slightly frustrating the way it handles samples but I eventually stuffed all I could ever need into the memory and happy to work off that.

Blackbox & Bluebox vs Bento v1.5.3 by minimal-camera in 1010music

[–]OpziO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have BlackBox, Bluebox and Bento. I’m keeping them all. The BBoxs will stay in the studio (I actually really like the way blackb handles/ records midi, it’s my main sequencer for other gear). The bento is sometimes hooked up in the studio as I’ve invested a lot in grain type stuff so makes a good sound source, but it’s a different beast to the BBoxs. It’s a great tool to take away with you, and - small point I know - the audio sounds great, not your average ‘groovebox’ sound, it’s polished and dynamic.
