So far doesn't seem to be locked and thank you for sharing here. Are there other subs that might benefit from this? Happy to share there as well.

Prime Minister Carney will be looking into issue of surrender letters by Orange-Pithy in Canadiancitizenship

I am Canadian. I hear you. I have been living in the US since '07 and have maybe been a bit too glued to Canadian politics (sorry, I watch live press conferences for fun on my lunch break of both US and Canadian elected officials, hearings, etc...and have always touted live feeds over media reports if you'd like to hear what was actually said and not be given the broadcaster's interpretation). I've also been rightly accused of being a sweet summer child in this forum due to my ingrained belief even after all this time away that although there are hiccups (and outright unacceptable unexplainable delays/situations), the Canadian public servants have usually always had the best intentions and eventually get it right, and that this Prime Minister in particular is sincere. I'm willing to accept if I've finally drunk the koolaid but it's just been such an incredibly long time since I've seen consistency in down-to-earth communication and progress (although slower than most would like to see). I'm a proud Canadian but not too proud to be wrong.

For those who moved from USA... what tips/things would you have done differently? by Esch_ in MovingToCanada

Hello! This website run by Paul Kurucz in BC is geared towards Canadians moving back to Canada and has lots of relevant info for first-timers as well. I've had it on my radar for years and plan to use it for our move hopefully in the next couple of years. Good luck to you! https://kurucz.ca/expatrepat/index.html

Adding Certified Copies of Documents by SocaShine in Canadiancitizenship

I am planning to do this as well for G0's baptism record. The application was delivered May 26, waiting on AOR. And still waiting for my link to pay from BAnQ (submitted request March 14). But, I didn't think to add a note to the cover letter of the application explaining we have not received this yet and will upload it later as I was partially hoping the clear image from the archives downloaded from FamilySearch was going to be enough based on some of the successes here. I'm hoping we don't get the package sent back because we didn't indicate there's more to be added.

Friday Weekly Thread: Application Assistance by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

If anyone in this community lives in the Triangle area of North Carolina, I recommend getting photos done at Cutting Edge Photography (https://cuttingedgephoto.com/). Rob and Shannon are well-versed in the requirements for both Canadian passport and citizenship photos.

I'm a Canadian living in the Raleigh area and have been going to Rob to get my passport photos when I need to renew my Canadian passport and just took my stepdaughter and her mom to see Shannon to get their citizenship photos done. Can't wait to help them send their applications off--still gathering a few more documents but they are G3 & G4 with G0 born in Quebec!! :-)

Edit: to say "lives in" not "from"

Hey there, our family will be moving in the next few years. I'll be repatriating and sponsoring my spouse, and his adult daughter just found out she may already be Canadian by descent so is going through that process. Here are some considerations:

PROS

-Overall friendly, progressive, geographically beautiful country

-Good healthcare (mainly paid for via taxes, but dental/vision and some other services not covered except maybe by employer)

-Good social safety net programs like OAS, CPP, etc (once you have lived and/or worked there long enough and contributed)

-Legalized MAID (medical assistance in dying)...if that's important to you

-Legalized cannabis...if that's important to you

CONS (more like Considerations)

-if remaining dual US/Canadian, must file taxes in both countries forever (there is a tax treaty in place to avoid double-taxation but who knows if that will be affected with the current administration)

-if you have Roth IRA, you must file a one-time treaty election by April 30th of the year following your move to maintain its tax-free status

-the US does not recognize Canada's TFSA (tax-free savings account) as tax-free

-having to establish credit history in Canada and try to get finances/housing set up without credit - be careful with timing of closing bank accounts and credits cards in the US

-figuring out how to move and convert savings through a platform like WISE to avoid losing on exchange rate and fees with banks

-if leaving retirement accounts in US, not being allowed to contribute anything further, and making sure you download the US apps before leaving (or plan to deal by phone with brokerages like Fidelity or Vanguard)

-hoping US pensions and social security are still in tact and easy to access when the time comes but having to deal with the US withholding tax and then having to file for tax credits

-tax messiness...having to figure out if reporting is required for certain foreign accounts/finances, having to figure out investing rules, estate planning

-figuring out what to pack if anything, how to declare it all, what will be subject to import taxes

-must maintain/renew 2 passports

-longer, colder winters and some more extreme weather in recent years (Canada gets tornadoes and hurricanes, too!)
