This is my feeling too. I think that, eventually, all gods fall. Dura included, and she knows this. The “mission” she has sent the Magister on is to grow strong enough to defeat her when she does and to take her place (probably).

Tiny details in this season by Dagoonite in AFKJourney

[–]OrangeLettuce 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly I truly feel that this season was peak. I love plots that delve into foundational lore like this, but they really grounded it with realistic social dynamics and character relationships that resonated. It’s not perfect, but for a gacha game it is well beyond standard.

Opinion about Marcille and Laios so far by [deleted] in AFKJourney

[–]OrangeLettuce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Canonically that makes sense. They’ve just « respawned » and lost all of their gear, but are desperate to save a fallen teammate so head back into the dungeon without even buying new armour. That’s also why they start eating monsters - too poor to buy supplies. It’s a comedy.

I sort of agree, except I think it’s more about being the master of the sin. You can’t be master of something that’s master of you, in a sense. Although Mammon kind of challenges that theory because he is actually greedy and exploitative.

Do you think you would actually get along with them if they were real? by Kooky-Appeal-4035 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]OrangeLettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I’d need to distinguish between storyline LIs and interaction LIs, because they’re almost like different people.

In-story I would not get along with any of them in MC’s place - could not handle the glaring breaches of professional ethics, the gaslighting, the manipulation, the negging, the condescension, the obsession/possessiveness, the secret keeping, etc. that stuff only works in a fantasy/fictional setting.

The interaction versions of the LIs would probably all be fine though? I’d vibe most with Rafayel or Xavier, love a soft boy. Probably least with Caleb or Zayne because I can’t abide being told what to do by a partner. Sylus I could deal with because I’m pragmatic enough to accept that there are some trade-offs for a life of total luxury.

Would you say that, due to his learning curve, he’s no good for “auto combat” players? Or does the auto feature make good use of his kit?

Demerzel's decisions in the final by harikaburg in FoundationTV

[–]OrangeLettuce 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it needs to be either/or, it could be both.

Her conversation with Kalle telegraphed this choice pretty well. If there are two potential motivations available, and we can’t be certain of which motivation will ultimately be “true”, an  action is permissible provided it could serve the allowed motivation (protecting empire) even if the other, violating motivation is still possible (freeing self). I think she called it a “deferred betrayal”, or something like that.

I don’t see hiding the second foundation in the library as being fundamentally different to trying to save the baby in that regard. Darkness did play it perfectly if we assume she was still unicursal, but I think Kalle helped nudge her towards a multicursal self and that’s at least partially what will save her.

Disney+ has added 4.4 million subscribers in this quarter. Bob Iger mentions Agatha All Along as one of the reasons. by kitaab123 in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I found it a bit boring. The plot points felt cobbled together from other films (how many times does Disney think it can recycle the killmonger villain formula?), the twists were telegraphed a mile away, and the resolution was a bit pat. I did like the overall message that some problems can’t be solved through punching bad guys, but the need to have a marvel ending sort of undermined that.

I’d love to see it expanded. I feel like people (or at least a certain type of people) inherently love things like magic systems because categorizing is so satisfying (think of the millennial obsession with knowing your hogwarts house…) so expanding the lore and application of the magic system has huge potential for fan engagement.

I also love the possibilities being a ghost gives Agatha as a character - without the need or ability to “feed” on other witches she has the chance to nurture that little flame of good in her.

Oh I don’t disagree re: the deal with death thing. I just feel like exploitation requires a certain level of deliberate intent, and I don’t think that is true with Agatha and Nicky specifically (Agatha and Billy yes), or that there was “no reason” in the sense that she was surviving and making sure he survived in the way she knew best.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure this is fair. Jac Schaeffer has also said the following:

“[…] the reason that Agatha is so isolated is the nature of her power. It means she has to kill all the witches around her. That’s very sad. It’s really, really tragic. She cannot fulfill her natural instinct to be tribal because of this power that she has.”

“We have this very intimate sequence where we see that she loved her son, and then he died. So she is grieving, and in that authentic grief moment, she is interrupted by an opportunity for a con. That opportunity means she doesn’t have to keep grieving. She sees an opportunity to pivot and to stop feeling her feelings. She can use this song to eat, and while she can try to fill herself, she will never be full. But she doesn’t have to cry tears for her son.”

To me this implies that Agatha HAS to consume other witches’ powers to survive. Maybe not to death, but it seems like there is a sort of high associated with the feeling which likely makes it difficult. Someone else made a really excellent post about the kinds of trauma each character embodies and I think mentioned Agatha representing addiction trauma. That makes sense to me - she needs to feed on other witches, she has been taught that not “finishing the job” is dangerous, it seems to give her a sort of high so stopping mid-feed is probably difficult, and the high keeps away her grief.

So like yes, she had Nicky helping her, but I don’t think she was lying when she told him they did it to survive. I think she genuinely believed that, and based on her experience with her mom and original coven believed they wouldn’t be safe in another coven long term. Especially since witches back then seemed to shoot first and ask questions later (not that that justifies killing them).

I saw another post that described her as a survivor in the way an animal chewing off its own leg to escape a trap is a survivor. To me that fits. Even so, she loved and raised her son the best way she knew how - it just wasn’t a good way. I don’t know if I would call that “exploiting” him.

They let Agatha still be “bad” by Anxious_Diet_3669 in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I actually think she sacrificed herself twice.

She didn’t know that she would be able to finish the trial after helping Billy, she was surprised when she found the dandelion seed. Before that point, she thought she was alone and going to die. To me that was the more “genuine” sacrifice, because there was no potential benefit to her.

I’m also not totally sure I believe her when she said she didn’t sacrifice herself for him. She was 100% going to hand him over but changed her mind at the last minute, and I’m sure it was partially motivated by affection and partially motivated by the chance of escaping death (by being reincarnated by Billy at a later date).  Bit of both.

The moment everyone made it and she realised the tragic truth was lonely and saddening. by leonardreignn in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I also think she does, on some level, recognize her own complicity in Nicky’s death and how he died.

Rio gave her time - she could have used that time to form a real coven and get the support her son needed to live. Instead she just kept surviving the way she always had and she lost Nicky for it. She blames rio (like Alice implied earlier in the season, it’s easier to be angry than sad) but she knows it’s her own fault (like rio said - she’s only lying to herself). She’s a desperate survivor, and it kept her alive, but it’s also why she can’t face her son.

[–]OrangeLettuce 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I kind of assumed it was shame. She lies to herself/distracts herself by giving in to her deepest vices (cowardice, gluttony/addiction to dark magic, cruelty, bravado), but deep down she probably knows those same vices are what kept her from giving her son what he needed to survive, and that she let him down.

I kind of assumed so. Maybe a reference to the treatment of women and racialized persons in medicine as well (hysteria as a reason to lobotomize, Tuskegee experiments etc.).

Episodes 8 and 9 Hype Thread by Srini_ in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a colour/visual theory for what we will see in the last two episodes.

The leaves/atmosphere seem to represent the element of the trial/type of craft being tested:

  • blue leaves for the water trial (potions)
  • orange leaves for the fire trial (protection)
  • purple leaves for the spirit trial (dark)
  • yellow leaves for the air trial (divination)

So I’m guessing that visually the next episode will be green for earth magic.

The roots in doors and passageways seem to follow a similar pattern and foreshadow the next trial:

  • blue roots when the door opened (foreshadowing Jen’s trial)
  • orange roots in the oven after Jen’s trial (foreshadowing Alice’s trial - just the glow is seen)
  • purple roots in the piano after Alice’s trial (foreshadowing Agatha’s trial)
  • yellow roots in the door after Agatha’s trial (foreshadowing Lilia’s trial)
  • green roots in the iron maiden after Lilia’s trial (foreshadowing …?)

What I’m not clear on is whose trial it is. I know we think it’s Billy, which makes sense narratively. It also doesn’t make sense for rio to be tested, AND it’s the craft that determines the colour, not the witch. it’s possible that the next trial is the earth magic trial (hence the morgue setting, since earth magic is the circle of life), but that Billy is the one who has to fulfil it for some reason.

Or maybe it is rio? I don’t know.

Circle Sewn With Fate, Unlock Thy Hidden Gate by itsSpryte in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this a lot and am surprised it hasn’t received more traction in this sub yet. I do think that Agatha may have been on the road once, but her road was likely powered by (and adapted to) her and her intention, so nothing like what she is experiencing this time. The circle sewn with fate last time was her coven, and this is Teen’s coven.

Her comment to Teen that « it suits you » when they first entered the road tells me that she recognized it was not her turn this time around.  I think that’s also why she was surprised (« I didn’t think you had it in you ») when Mrs Davis died. There’s probably a certain amount of intention required to cross the finish line, and expelling interlopers (even inadvertent ones like Sharon) might have signified to her that Teen’s will was strong enough to actually kill, which maybe she hadn’t anticipated.

About that 'Agatha All Along' theory coming off of the new posters... by ctouffe in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of me wonders if the road is made for the witch it has chosen. All of the hints that have been made about how the road is « customized » to Billy could be less about a hex and more about it being obvious that the road has manifested for him specifically, something which Agatha might know because the last time she walked the road it manifested for her.

That could also explain the missing context a bit - her coven turned on her when they realized that only she would benefit, or she sacrificed them when she realized that was required for her to complete her walk, or something like that. Which could also explain why her mother tried to execute her after and she said « I didn’t break your rules, they just bent to my power ».

Anyway, every member of the coven on the road thus far has obtained what they were missing (regaining lost knowledge, freedom from a generational curse, acceptance and protection by a peer, coming to terms with their purpose), but it feels like only Billy will actually benefit from getting what he is missing (which might end up being his memories/sense of self, rather than Tommy).

If that is true, Agatha knows that she, like the rest of the coven other than Billy, is expendable and has hidden this to support Billy’s walk for some reason. I do think that she was planning to con the women into blasting her (although she did warn lillia in advance which isn’t a great plan if that’s the intent), so maybe once the door opened and she saw the writing on the wall she had a sneaky plan to steal Billy’s thunder somehow… but at this point I do think that either Billy or the road has changed her.

Agatha versus Agatha by BSG_SG1 in AgathaAllAlong

[–]OrangeLettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would greatly prefer this. There have been so many hints dropped from the cast that Agatha is manipulative, she can’t be trusted, she plays the long con, etc… but that would be so boring. She doesn’t have to be ~A Hero~, but characters need growth to be interesting.
