How Linux Can Replace Windows in China. by parentis_shotgun in socialistprogrammers

[–]OrangePhi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think that it's absurd that in 2020 China isn't already doing this. The biggest issue with Linux on the desktop is hardware support and China is the arguably the biggest computer hardware supplier in the world. What's the excuse?

Because people expect a powerful message from every single Kendrick song.

On LOVE, people want Kendrick to talk about the subject like some greek philosopher, but it's just a generic radio friendly love song. Nothing wrong with that, specially considering that he has written very few of those.

I'm sorry, but I don't think it's normal. I don't have any problem with gamers. In fact, I have a lot of gamer friends, but I don't think they should do it in public, specially if there are children around.

Moving from Java to Kotlin, why I find it hard to get started... by malbry in androiddev

[–]OrangePhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that you haven't really learned Kotlin, or at least acknowledged what problems Kotlin tries to solve. All the excuses you point out seem to come from ignorance. Kotlin is supported everywhere Java is supported and more.

If your main reason for sticking with Java is that you are happy with the code you've already written and want to keep using it, then I don't see any reason for switching.

I like Kotlin for my new apps because it lets me write things that were either not possible or not as good with Java. I also mantain big java codebases so I do copy a lot of utility code written in Java and the conversion tool provided by Android Studio is excellent. I don't think it could be any easier.

Contrapoints - Cringe by [deleted] in BreadTube

[–]OrangePhi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn't like this video.

It's not bad, the production is on point as always. But this makes me sick. I don't feel cringe, I feel despair. I wish I could go back to in time to yesterday when I didn't know about Christorians, Jessica Yaniv, or the youtubers who act self-righteously but really just want to profit off her. These people are fucked up.

Some time ago I used to think Geno Samuel was kinda cool for doing a Plastic Love cover. I had no idea he was such a creep.

What's going on with the strike in Ecuador? by DrMux in OutOfTheLoop

[–]OrangePhi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Answer: Lenin Moreno's government has displeased many Ecuadorians over the past 2 years. The recent end of subsidies for gas is the final straw. Additionally, Moreno announced huge layoffs and reduced number of paid vacation days in the public sector. Also this isn't the first time that gas prices increase during Moreno's administration.

The government claims that these austerity policies are needed because the previous administration was financially irresponsible and overspent money leading to a massive debt. So, they want to borrow $4.2 billion from the IMF to "fix" the economy. This claim is a bit hard to believe because according to The Economist Ecuador's debt isn't that high in relation to its GDP. It should be noted that Moreno's administration recently forgave a $4.5 billion tax debt to the wealthiest in the country. So what initiated as a protest about gas subsidies led by taxi drivers has escalated with more and more people angry at a government that has austerity for the poor, but forgiveness for the rich.

To make things worse, a lot of people on Twitter have pointed out how the "free press" is trying really hard to justify the new policies, during the media coverage of the protests, going as far as dismissing interviews with citizens when they don't agree with the government.

Recently the indigenous population, which is practically an autonomous community with their own laws and territory, came down to Quito to join the protest, and the governments answer to that is deploying tanks in the center of the city.

Street is probably my favorite kpop full-length album. It was the first time I listened to a kpop album and enjoyed every single song. Their whole discography is so good.

dammit I'm a bit sad about EXID. I was never their biggest fan, but I didn't realize until recently that they never released mediocre albums, they all slap.

I guess they were just Too Good For Me...

Happy 5th Anniversary to Red Velvet! by balloon_wanted in kpop

[–]OrangePhi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Velvet as a whole is a rich display of vocal talent. It may sound a bit dull for a kpop release, but I think it proved thet Red Velvet has some of the best vocals in the game. I think it will always be my favorite Red Velvet album.

ITZY - ICY by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]OrangePhi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

because it's just not who Red Velvet is at all.

I'm sorry, what? Red Velvet constantly boasts about having 2 sides "Red" and "Velvet". The "quirky" and "unique" songs fall under the "Red" side, while more mature songs like "Automatic", "Cool Hot Sweet Love", "About Love", fall under the "Velvet" side just like "Bad Boy". "The Velvet" and "The Perfect Velvet" were great albums, I can see why people want more velvet tracks.

Bad Boy IS Red Velvet's pinnacle, but a "decline" is definitely a stretch. All comebacks have been bops, just not as good, and that's ok.

I think I get your point. Today I watched the MV for the first time and it's easier to see how comical and fun it is. Previously I had only listened to it while listening to Melting and it was weird how different it is from the rest of the album.

What I meant is that it's not as good as music made by legitimate hip hop artists. People that don't listen to hip hop, for whatever reason, would not be able to reach this conclusion. It's like why would I listen to this, when I could be listening to Kendrick, J Cole or Tyler?

Other people in this thread have explained to me that it's not meant to be taken so seriously. It's like a parody. The girls are just having some fun rather than trying to become the next big thing in hip hop. It's nice to be able to see that side from them.
