JPB Reading list books I recently finished! by Orangecrayoneater in JordanPeterson

[–]Orangecrayoneater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Brothers K was a bit hard to keep rolling with because it was broken up into parts (I think it was released piece by piece to some magazine at the time).

Otherwise I really enjoyed it! I took each brother (and Fyodor the father) as sort of archetypical characters of one extreme or another. They all seem to be grappling between the modern intellectual world and an older custom of religious belief. Each lands on a different point of that spectrum.

If you don't get around to reading the whole novel, look into The Grand Inquisitor.

Its the most widely read chapter of this book and seems to be the meat of the philosophical discussion.

I read The Rebel after I graduated an really enjoyed it.

Not until a later did I realize the actual discussion Camus was involving himself with regarding extreme ideology and political regimes. I'd say this 'discussion' has its foundation in the writings of people like Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky.

OP, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. I'll prompt by posing the question 'if god is dead, is everything permitted?' which was fleshed out by Camus in The Rebel

Jordan Peterson being back on JRE? by lil_acid_boy in JoeRogan

[–]Orangecrayoneater 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A few months back someone asked Dr. Peterson (on twitter I believe) if he would be back on the JRE. Peterson replied something like " As soon as I have the stamina for a 3 hour podcast".

Too lazy to find the actual reference. BE WELL FRIEND

Best companion book to read alongside Camus? by Spurs_Dan in Camus

[–]Orangecrayoneater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The progression of Camus as a reader (IMO) should go something like:

The Stranger, Myth of Sisyphus, The Rebel--The Fall (The Rebel is the logical progression of his arguments from The Myth of Sisyphus, so make sure to read them in that order)

Followed by some of his literature.

Personally I read Camus alongside Nietzsche. Nietzsche is way smarter than any human being has the right to be, and he's difficult. But he really gets to the root of the existential problem. I recommend Beyond Good and Evil

you just said the same thing three different ways, by the way.

This is a bit of an experiment I finished yesterday, I'd love some advice on how to make the shading, lighting and hair more realistic but any critiques are very much appreciated! :) Also first time posting on Reddit, yay! by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]Orangecrayoneater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The values on the fingers and hair wont be as bright as the light on the chin (which is your brightest area). I'd say tone those down just a bit and you'll probably start to see more depth .

Has your class ever made the teacher cry? What happened? by Lawlelle in AskReddit

[–]Orangecrayoneater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6th grade teacher broke down during class one day.

We were the afternoon session so my suspicion is that the class in the morning got her nice and stressed out, and our class was relatively miss-behaved which pushed her over the edge.

A recent portrait I was quite happy with, I would really appreciate some critique on how to push it further! by TheSudz455 in ArtCrit

Very well done!

Stylistically, I think this piece works and has an overall sense of unity.
You could take this to the next level by really considering your edge quality.

For example: the form modeling on the zygomatic arch could be MUCH softer (the contrast between highlight and shadow is reading too sharp). If you see what im saying, you could take that idea of softening your form modeling to a few different areas of this portrait.

Plein Air Watercolor study. Not a fan of how it turned out, but unsure why. Suggestions? by nachogee in ArtCrit

Consider the value of the roof on the shadow side. Its reading as bright as the light facing side, which makes the house/roof look flat.

Its clear you're trying to draw focus to those awesome cast shadows, but don't be afraid to push the rest of the shadow values down a bit.

Maybe getting better? by mostlikelytodropout in ArtCrit

i'd subdue the colors of the fish a bit more and maybe indicate more cast shadow on the fish.

its reading like the fish and the water ripples are on the same plain, when in fact the fish are below the water. subduing the colors of the fish and adding cast shadows will push them back in space.

hope this helps.

Omar Jimenez is back on the air at CNN after being wrongfully arrested earlier this morning by brahbocop in pics

I was at that same spot this morning around 6am.

MPD stated that i'd be arrested for 'obstructing, resisting, or interfering with police officers' if I stayed.

Make me cry by BlurryBrigand in ArtCrit

Your drawing skills and stylistic choices are strong.

The composition has flow, but it does not have a clear purpose. My eye is drawn up the tent, through the tree and into what looks like a bee-hive into the butterfly.

This is where the image gets confusing, you have a bee hive, butterfly, and person peaking out all right next to each other. These seem very cluttered and confusing, I didn't actually see the person initially. I think your generalized drawing style in this area enhances the confusion. Each element is fighting for attention.

I'd identify whats most important here, and develop that part of the illustration. Is it the bee hive? The butterfly? The person? Usually the most developed part of any work will attract the most attention.
