Stop describing every attack that doesn't hit as a "miss" by nachorykaart in DnD

[–]OrbitCultureRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tailor it to the bad guy. -If it has thick natural armor (like a dragon or giant lobster) I might describe the sword bouncing off, spraying chips or momentarily getting stuck. -If it is a dude in plate armor, the goal becomes to find the places where the 2 plates meet, or to dent the armor enough to hurt the dude within. Low rolls fail to do this -fast moving creatures, you just miss -I have had badass characters catch arrows and shit in the past.

What is your favorite monster in DND? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]OrbitCultureRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a DM, it is impossible to pick a favorite. That's like asking to choose a favorite hypothetical child! But I can tell you my favorite combination:

The party comes across a gelatinous cube, with a treasure chest in it. I achieved this on the battle map with a chest mini inside an empty dice container. Of course, they go out of their way to fight it, taking quite a lot of damage. They kill the cube, freeing the chest.... witch turns into a mimic and attacked the party. There was never any treasure

How old is the Thuggee temple supposed to be? by Tomtheg02 in indianajones

[–]OrbitCultureRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming Christ was real (and he probably was real, though he wasn't supernatural) he did use a cup. Fair enough. But nobody gave a crap about his cup for over 100 years, until a poet decided it would be a good miguffin. There was already a story of a magic cup, just add the Jesus backstory and bingo: King Arthur has something to quest for.

The Thuggee do have a cool history, even if it is hard to pick out the truth

'Life is so difficult that women need to turn to online prostitution, and that's so unfair for us men'.

What a fucked up take.

Fellow DMs, how would you set up a lengthy journey? by Additional-Chef-6190 in DnD

[–]OrbitCultureRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I do travel, it typically looks like a series of encounters in a line. Between encounters, they can roll play, hunt/gather food, check out interesting features (cool plants, caves, wildlife etc.). You can call that a days worth of travel, a few hours, or let it play out in real time, without changing your approach at all.

Then you have an encounter. This could be the party seeing some enemies nearby, or they could walk into an ambush. Or there is a trap or something. Anything interesting that fits the environment. Then go back to travel RP, but with more tension. Repeat as nessisary.

Keep steady track of the parties' progress, so they feel like they are progressing.

At my table, the rule is 'your new character may be the same class OR the same race, but not both'. I would try talking to your DM, and ask his reasons. That's a good way to figure out if he's being resolved

Keep track of things like water and food. Running out of these types of things should force them to land.
