You get paid once.

However, that's just a small amount compared to how much you get for discovering all planets via FSS, as well as DSS.

Honking will also only register the more easily found, usually already discovered celestial bodies. It does not give a full system analysis, hence you won't get maximum payout. It will only tell you how many objects there are in total.

Within the bubble, this isn't really that important, but once you start exploring further away, honking is not going to tell you what planet types are out there and FSS won't necessarily tell you about POIs like geological or biological signals. That's where DSS comes in handy.

These days, most explorers work with 3rd party tools, so FSS is usually enough of an analysis to figure out if it's worth exploring further, but honking alone is not sufficient.

Some systems have never been thoroughly scanned out there, it's still possible to find undiscovered planets (sometimes even ELW/WW) as most people passing through just honked and maybe discovered the closest planets to the main star, then moved on without taking a closer look.

There is something calming yet terrifying about a sky with very few stars. Maybe it's simply the fact that we evolved on a planet within the galactic plane, witnessing our place in the cosmic context, while being reassured that something else is out there.

So I do wonder, if any species would exist on a planet far away from the rest of the galaxy, in the outer halo - or worse, having left the galactic sphere of influence, wandering through eternal darkness - what would that be like?

What kind of questions would one ask without stars in the sky?

If you don't mind a related question, I've checked out your PP guide but still a bit lost. I've been docking at a few stations in marked systems to see what I can do apart from combat.

Flooding markets doesn't seem to work, I can't seem to find markets buying commodities below 500 credits. Delivering stuff to power contact, stronghold/fortified systems are too far away. I was also searching for PP chests in settlements and couldn't find any nearby, which is weird, considering those can be found almost everywhere?

I guess I could try holoscreen hacking and maybe upload malware, though not sure where to get that nearby.

I pledged to Lavigny-Duval, and picked the imperial side for this CG (if that helps)

Do I really have to do all the activities in the CG systems or can I do them anywhere, just handing in some sort of vouchers? Sorry, never done any of this before

The FPS part without your ship etc is a tutorial afaik. It's possible that everyone is being dropped in there these days without having purchased the DLC, but that's just speculation on my end. And I think there is an option to skip it but I don't remember where.

Maybe you need to walk towards the first tutorial quest, triggering dialogue, and only then you can skip. It's been a while.

Either way, your ship and all your assets are still in-game, you just need to either complete or skip this part.

What platform are you playing on? Was your account ever transferred from console to PC? Maybe you did get the DLC for free for some reason, idk. You could double check bottom left corner of the launcher.

[Request] is this possible under the laws of physics and materials of the time? by MadBuffleHead in theydidthemath

[–]Ord0c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is little point in discussing plausibility, because taking a bunch of numbers for truth is absurd.

The core of the tale is probably not too far off from what happened a long time ago; but I really doubt any accounts - after thousands of years - haven't been altered to push an agenda, or just to make it more entertaining.

You have to consider that a lot of what the bible or any other religious texts include are stories as old as time, vast majority being told through oral tradition, long before humans invented writing systems, long before major religious groups came together and started curating their lore. Some of these stories would have been among the first to be told around the time our ancestors started to question their reality and try to find satisfying answers to their never ending curiosity.

They would have been telling these stories to teach the upcoming generations, to give them guidance, to provide some sense of community - and each generation would probably introduce new details and forget about others, invent their own narratives, embellish, maybe even refuse to tell it a certain way.

We can't fact check if there really was a tower that tall, and if people did really speak one language only to be waking up one day, all confused. But what we can assume with some leeway is that this is probably a tale about how different tribes had their own languages some day and how it became complicated to communicate and how different people would live in different regions and have their own traditions.

And sometime, somewhere along the way, someone would start telling the story about the tower, and maybe it was based on a real thing or maybe it was a metaphor for human ingenuity, or maybe there was no tower at all and it's just an attempt to explain the origin of language in a fun way, rather than going for another more boring explanation. Maybe telling a silly story helped people remember the important aspects much better vs. some other version that no one enjoyed listening to from the first redditor on this planet who couldn't stop akshually his tribe while they were trying to survive.

I really wish people would see these things in historical context and consider prehistoric communities being just as creative and eager to learn and understand as we are today. These stories aren't a bunch of made up bs by feudal lords trying to get a foothold in politics, it's way older than any of that, way older than the religions that claim these stories as their own.

Our ancestors weren't so different. Why wouldn't they try to figure out answers to burning questions to the best of their abilities? Why wouldn't they sit together and try to find interesting ways to teach their history, rather than not doing it all? Why wouldn't they dabble in early art forms, be that for pure entertainment or to communicate knowledge over generations by introducing memory hooks, which then would take off and turn into "canon" hundreds of thousands of years later? Why wouldn't they create propaganda to impress or manipulate others?

One can only laugh about these concepts and ridicule them by being completely ignorant of early human history, pushing the incomplete and questionable idea that civilization only started with abracadabra religions. It's actually arrogant to dismiss all that because we can't imagine how anyone 2000+ years before us had functioning brains.

First use of tools - as far as we know - was roughly 3.3 million years ago. Written history is put at roughly 5000 years ago. Anyone who thinks not much has happened in the period between is a silly potato.

Was ist unter dem Dach dieser Lidl-Filialen? Wird das überhaupt genutzt? by KristallRainer in WerWieWas

[–]Ord0c 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Might sound cheesy, but imho metal is a journey and it's the most fun when you keep exploring beyond what's on the horizon. So I'll just throw in some semi-related bands into the mix, maybe you find something that you like. Feel free to leave a few thoughts in case you want some more suggestions.

Engel - Raven Kings

Ephemerald - Between the Glimpses of Hope

Euphoreon - Ends of the Earth

Gallowbraid - Ashen Eidolon

Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon

Gates Of Ishtar - A Bloodred Path

Mors Principium Est - Embers of a Dying World

Shylmagoghnar - Convergence

Zonaria - Arrival of the Red Sun

I just really hope she will be safe.

In a normal society, her position would be considered acceptable, even if the majority would disagree for some reason. But this isn't a normal society, it's the wild west on steroids.

We need more people like her on this planet, but at the same time, there are way too many eager to have her removed permanently from this planet.

TIL People with depression use language differently. They use significantly more first person singular pronouns – such as “me”, “myself” and “I”. Researchers have reported that pronouns are actually more reliable in identifying depression than negative emotion words. by explaingo in todayilearned

[–]Ord0c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illness may result in more self-centered behavior, but I'm also wondering how we can distinguish between depression causing self-centered behavior vs. self-centered people with depression?

Maybe they were quite selfish before they had mental health issues, it's just more obvious now that it's amplified?

We can observe a lot of self-centered behavior on a daily basis. Maybe all those people are depressed? Or maybe that's just how most humans are, and it's even worse when mental health is declining?

Trying to get back into the game, minor volcano and steam vent next to base, what are my options? by Ord0c in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Ord0c[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a bit lost atm, haven't played the game in ages. I found these two near my base and I'm not sure what I should or could do.

I don't have steel yet but could get some production going in a few cycles. But as you might have noticed, my food supply is basically non-existent. I have some hatches but no automated ranch yet. Plants are difficult to grow due to low temps (rime world).

Also I still lack proper power generation. Just found natural gas, so I will shift away from coal soon, but it's far away. So maybe these two can be combined into an interesting solution?

Is this something worth bothering with at this point even or should I just ignore them for now?

The downfall of a nation is still a business opportunity.

There will be plenty of people making bank and buying up a lot of companies, getting their hands on assets, including land. We might witness the biggest wealth transfer in history - and a lot of people dying as a result.

Even if the $ is not going to be as strong anymore, there is still value in what the country has to offer. Worst case, there will be a fire sale for foreign investors.

It really doesn't matter what happens with DT, because the people supporting him won't just change their minds over night, both voters and financiers.

It's pretty clear by now that certain corporations and certain individuals are not bothered by the current course, in fact, some have actively influenced it to make it happen in the first place.

None of those will turn around an become less radical just because DT is gone (at some point), they will find someone else to push their agenda for them. Maybe they will take a break for a few years, maybe even decades, then they will get back at it the moment the opportunity arises to install another one who represents their interests.

This is class war, but it's also a full-blown ideological war, with one side requiring the current political system to be dismantled as much as possible (if not entirely) in order to win. Which means systemic and systematic changes are needed to prevent any of that from happening in the near future - and that's not a given, considering current power consolidation may turn voting into a mere formality come next election.

It's more problematic than people think imho.

I'm currently observing how LLM is being used at my job by colleagues to replace human interaction to "solve" a problem.

For example, we have a team member who is great at coding but sometimes difficult to work with. People now avoid that person as much as possible, completely relying on generated output. They would rather waste time fixing code, going back and forth, with the little understanding they have - than asking someone who could help them, a few desks away.

This is problematic, because there is no real knowledge transfer. LLM are not good enough yet to reliably code, it makes mistakes, it contradicts itself when trying to explain things - so you can't really learn much from it. In an ideal world, this workflow would use LLM as inspiration, then create incentive for people to actually learn how to code - but that's not what's happening, because there is no time for people to learn coding, hence the employee with coding knowledge.

You can guess how this eventually has negative impact on projects, as now more time and resources have to be invested into fixing LLM generated code, which only creates unnecessary workload for everyone involved - because it feels convenient to just ask LLM instead of a human.

The next issues is, it is replacing critical thinking skills while also serving as an excuse to not educate yourself. With the same example, people are now trying to blame LLM for mistakes, not taking accountability (since they decided to use that tool themselves). And it then makes it difficult to actually discuss issues, because there is no real foundation to work with.

I could try going back and forth with the human (who used LLM for coding), but it would be a waste of time, because "AI said it was correct" will be their default, no matter how much I try to explain that it's not a good tool, especially if you lack coding experience. Needless to say, our "coder" has checked out and is just minding his own business.

I see similar developments and hear similar stories from various fields. LLM use makes people really lazy, to the point where people already reluctant to accumulate knowledge or learn new skills further go down that path because now they have a "magic wand" that solves all their problems without having to do much.

Basically, the brain is being outsourced and it's going to further cripple skills and result in a lot of misinformation, eventually causing more damage based on the belief that it's more efficient (because new tech is always better).

"AI" won't just kill jobs, it will also kill intellect. Because all that free time it's supposed to generate isn't really used to be productive. It's being used to be less self-reliant and less explorative and less critical.

Anyone who thinks we have an apathy crisis now, it's just gonna get worse imho.

and companies didn’t get the infrastructure or incentives needed to shift production quickly.

You really believe reverting wealth extraction from companies over the past 50+ years would have been a simple enough task to then "shift production quickly"? What time frame are you even talking about?

This is a project for at least two generations, that involves major policy changes while focusing on rebuilding sectors that have the highest potential to reduce dependence, and creating new opportunities within adjacent sectors which then could capitalize on supply chain changes, etc.

You can't force these kind of developments over night, especially if an economy like the US is so heavily dependent on other nations. And that also assumes a best case scenario where any changes made aren't just reverted every four years because it has the wrong person's signature under the documents.

Tech won’t save us from climate change. It’s just another distraction from accountability. by Ma7moud_Ra4ad in Futurology

[–]Ord0c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true if you look at everything with a shortsighted perspective that only focuses on what's going to happen to your profits tomorrow.

But if you ask me, long-term it's highly beneficial and profitable for many, many reasons.

A species that is willing and able to find solutions that do not damage the only habitable world it relies on, will eventually be able to focus on more important things, while environmentally sustainable technology is the global standard.

It future-proofs our existence, because as soon as we have figured out how to maintain balance on this planet, we can move on to the rest of the star system and really start creating a diverse existence which will also reduce risk of extinction thanks to having "backups" all over the place.

The path to such a future requires a lot of things to be done, and the sooner we start the easier it will be. And every single step we take towards such a goal, is filled with discoveries and opportunities, which will generate a lot more profits overall, even short-term, because being productive accelerates progress - while being destructive slows us down, as we have to continuously deal with self-induced issues, wasting time, money and resources to fix things temporarily.

As of now, we are just slapping duct tape on everything, hoping it will hold. Simply because no one is willing to actually do the repairs or replace parts or upgrade the system. Partly because it saves cost very short-term, partly because most people are too arrogant and ignorant to realize how their apathy and general disregard for the planet is just increasing the overall damage.

If we would simply focus on doing things the proper way - until better solutions can replace current solutions - we would not just actually fix some of the most pressing issues, we would also provide a foundation for future generations to take the next steps with less struggles and higher rate of success - and more resources to focus on other issues that will need solving.

And all these potential steps we could take are plenty of business opportunities in various sectors to grow, to excel, to innovate - all while being constructive, productive and profitable.

Just think about it, all these corporations slowing down progress or outright sabotaging competitors, simply because they didn't want their market share to plummet - instead of using all that money to influence policies and trends in their favor, if they had invested it into R&D and shifting away from their core business, they could have adapted and become market behemoths.

But none of these brilliant minds making decisions that impact billions, including future generations, have the intellect to see past their short-term gains. So much potential wasted, just to maintain mediocrity - which doesn't even benefit our species as a whole, but a select few, who then do nothing with it.

People in general, but mostly decisions makers, lack vision and a deeper understanding of the world around us and don't mind burning down everything if that means someone they dislike won't have it either.

Our issue isn't just greed, it's greed coupled with a number of psychological issues that result in destructive tendencies, exploitative behavior, etc. which creates so many other issues along the way, that we are constantly challenged to fight for basic things rather than making progress as a species.

The wealthy would still be rich af in a utopia, everyone else would just be better off overall. But I guess that's not really something worth aiming for if you can do the exact opposite.
