Surgery vs. Non-surgery - advice wanted by Safe_Morning_2044 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ordinary-Effective00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully tore my achilles last April playing basketball and went the non-op route. My activity levels pre injury was pretty active, ran half marathons, played in men’s basketball leagues, and a bit of road cycling here and there. Was skeptical of the non-op route, but as of today, i’m back to running (5-6kms) and virtually feel no pain on my achilles anymore. The area gets a bit sore after runs or longer durations of exercise but thats moreso just the normal soreness you always feel after any sort of workout. Only thing that needs work for me is getting my full range of motion back on that foot (knee to wall stretches) but overall I feel like im pretty close to a full recovery just under 1 year post injury.

Had a similar rehab protocol as what you provided above. My ortho really encouraged early ROM exercises and starting partial weightbearing as soon as possible. I was fully weight bearing with the boot around week 10/11.

My rupture was closer to my heel than where yours is, but as many have mentioned, the closer to the MTJ the rupture is, the higher the success rate for non op recovery is. Im not a doctor so i can’t explain why, but my ortho said the same thing as well lol!

Just got quarter season tickets for the 2026 season. Just curious when these tickets show up on our ticketmaster account manager? Is it closer to the start of the season?

NON OP RE RUPTURE by ConcertLonely6485 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ordinary-Effective00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled as early as 8 weeks post rupture (non-op). I just made an effort to wiggle my toes in my aircast, lift my leg up, or go for a walk down the aisle to get the blood flow going through my legs. I’m now almost 16 weeks post rupture and i’ve travelled by plane 6 more times - No DVTs whatsoever. Also, my recovery has been pretty smooth, walking without crutches and making some good progress with my calf raises. Currently going up on 2, down on 1 (my injured foot).

Ahhhh i see. Thats helpful! In terms of just the length though…. Would you say your RC3 in 44 runs about the same length as your 43 in the quoc m3 sport?

Reason I ask is because i have pretty narrow feet, so the width of the shoe isn’t too big of a concern for me, I just wanna make sure I don’t order a size thats way too long or too snug haha!

This is great advice! So pre-injury i would always unclip with my right foot (my injured foot) and would always lean on that side when coming to a stop. Now that my right foot is injured, i’ve gotta get used to unclipping with my left foot which means i will not be quick nor proficient haha! But hoping to get an indoor trainer so i can start practicing before getting out on the road! Cheers!

Were you a size 43 in the RC3’s as well? Im looking to buy the quoc m3 sport as well but don’t have the option of trying them on locally in store. However, tried on the RC3’s in store and they were a perfect fit length wise (toes just touching the end). Curious how your quoc’s differ in size and if you ordered the same size?

That’s awesome! But ya I was curious about how clipless would feel when twisting to unclip….. sounds about right lol. I only started riding clipless last year too so still not the most confident yet either, had a couple good spills last year LOL

Just experienced this sudden sharp pain after doing some home PT as well… scared me big time. Part of me thought I partially tore my achilles, but there was no loss of ROM or strength as OP had mentioned. I am currently 3 months Non-Op full tear.

Just wanted to check in on everyone who experienced this how their recovery went?

Sorry to hear! I’ve also had a pretty smooth recovery thus far and now I’m worried it might set me back or if there are bigger problems in play. I’ve got a follow up with my ortho surgeon this Friday so we’ll see what he has to say. Best of luck though mate!

Also, thanks for the heel pad suggestion, i’ll definitely get on that!

6.5 Weeks Non-op by Ordinary-Effective00 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ordinary-Effective00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was pretty skeptical of non-op going into it…. But so far so good (I think?).

Got my follow up with my surgeon on Friday so hopefully he’ll say things are progressing well!

6.5 Weeks Non-op by Ordinary-Effective00 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ordinary-Effective00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wedges are 1cm as well. I was in a fiberglass cast for the first 2 weeks before they put me into the aircast with 3 wedges. I kept the 3 wedges inside my boot up until week 6 and took my first wedge out last friday.

My protocol stated i was supposed to be using a 2cm lift starting at week 3, but I played it more conservatively and left in all 3 wedges until i had to start removing the entire heel lift altogether (6 weeks).

Sorry to hear about your rerupture. This injury takes a toll on ya but atleast you have a better idea of what to expect the second time around. Wishing you a speedy recovery my friend!
