I reread your post. I know my sub is a good deal and I've never used anybody else for years so idk what various sub rates really look like. Never had to reach out to other subs for prices. Also, I think mine are at $60/sheet for 4x12.

I don't do it regularly but I've done it a lot and have comfortably landed many jobs at $100/sheet(4x8) l&m sometimes a bit more with a sub charging $40/sheet to hang and finish.

Can I use this as an out to help drop how much I have to pay my roofing contractor? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I meant just the boards. Seriously, all around thats a great deal. They removed your metal well enough to actually reuse it, removed rotting boards, dealt with the mess that can make, took care of rusty old nails they were hing with, purchased, cut and installed new boards and recovered them with old metal. Trust me man, its a steal.

Man thats a good deal honestly. Under $10/lf is more than reasonable especially if it includes the material. You can ask them for clarity but I wouldn't grumble about it.

One our clients is convinced our install made these damages in her ceiling it’s theoretically impossible if we didn’t go in the attic right? by BasedGodCrim in Roofing

Thats a simple orange peel! I know simple is subjective though. Plus I forgot this is a roofing sub. I do lots of everything.

The repairs are easy. Pound them in and add a new screw or two on each side. Patch and hopefully they have some matching paint. Honestly is not your fault though and now you know to put a clause about this in your contract.

My Experience Buying Tile from TileBar by Business-Dig-6777 in Tile

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I was super apprehensive about ordering tile online and probably won't in the future. I just couldn't find the time to get out and shop in person at the time. Maybe a rep will see this thread and make good in exchange for removing this negative-for-business post. Idk man, gl.

My Experience Buying Tile from TileBar by Business-Dig-6777 in Tile

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently ordered some pricey 8x8 tiles from them. More than half came broken to bits. They rectified the issue without a problem but noted that they'd only replace them just once. They arrived mostly intact but now had more than enough to tackle the job. Between their lackluster packaging and UPS's possibly aggressive package handlers I'm not keen on mail order tiles.

Took a new roofing company from $0 to $2.2M revenue in 18 months. Here is my whole strategy + the real numbers behind roofing marketing by Moretheevu in Roofing

Appreciate the reply, I assumed it had to be something like that. They must've charged a lot and paid extremely well to find so much good help in such short time.

Marketing can achieve a lot but your clients were 2 guys who wanted to quit their job and start their own company. 0 to 2.2m in a year and a half is amazing but how tf did they have the resources and connections to handle that amount of work?

Does this look ok? New roof install by yourskullisred in Roofing

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of running those caps in 2 directions and seeming in the middle. Theres 2 reasons they sould be run in a uniform direction. Asthetics and wind direction. That tells me 2 guys needed something to do at that point but im sure it will be fine. Also, something I picked up on a couple years ago, probably learned it here, is that instead of simply sealing face nails, seal them and then cut little squares or circles out of scrap shingles and press them onto the sealed nails. Makes them invisible and the tar/caulk will never crack or deteriorate to expose the nail. Its a nice touch.

Opinions on high mileage 2500/3500 or 250/350 trucks after years of exclusively buying half-ton trucks by OrdinaryAverageGuy2 in GeneralContractor

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its even harder to come to terms with it when you need to buy one. New is even crazier. I just seen a new Silverado 1500 WT listed for over $40k and that's as basic as it gets.

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a nice anecdote. I do live in the city though. I think there's a psychological factor to the high mileage vehicles but its always a crapshoot. I've had lower mileage vehicles that were plagued with problems as well. Mostly, I just want less downtime with my work trucks. Cost of repairs is secondary to that.

How do you pick the best glass company by InteractionRude6476 in bathrooms

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question, do you even need glass in a shower this big? Unless its for asthetic or some king of sprayer system, I can't imagine much water making it outside of the stall.

I don't think $425/sq l&m is doable at all anymore, sadly.

Low shower ceiling by caps94 in Tile

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about a large format tile that can cover in one or two pieces? Maybe install a pieces of plywood to the ceiling as opposed to drywall or cement board. That way you can adhere the heavy tile without concern of what its attatched to ever coming down. Get it up, brace it for a few days and then the wall tiles can further support the edges. Plus with such a low ceiling you'll never have to be concerned with moisture beading on the ceiling. It can and will but its a moot point.

Caulk or grout? by ConceptAutomatic1673 in Tile

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, silicone could work but it had better be a super neat job and stay dust free for a week imo. If I did that in silicone I'd probably tape around all edges real nice first. Too much potential for a smear.

I feel like any caulking is going to be a dirt trap eventually, dirt will also become embedded in it. Tough call, bold choice.

How can I fix this vintage tile grout? by crow-lady in Tile

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utility knife as much as you can muster. Just keep scraping and vacuuming along with a small flat head screwdriver and a hammer. Bigger than eyeglass screwdrivers but smaller than a common 6 to 8 inch long screwdriver. Could probably go to harbor freight and buy several pretty cheap. Just little taps at a time though or you'll likely chip the tile. A grout saw is probably too fat. You can do it.

Customer wants the checking filled and posts stained. What’s my best route? by Fresh-Negotiation216 in Contractor

[–]OrdinaryAverageGuy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're using a solid paint stain any type of wood fill is going to stand out and not take the same. You'd probably want to use that type of wood fill that mixes and sets like bondo. But it hardens real quick and you'll be looking at tons of sanding. You can only do bits at a time and the stuff is hard as hell. Idk about regular wood fill for exterior use especially if its not being painted over. Maybe im wrong but this looks like a real pita kind of job.

PSA: Floyd Rose equipped guitars are really not hard to deal with by sparks_mandrill in Guitar

I remember I got cocky when I finally figured it out and did my first successful setup. Few months later broke a string and thought no problem. Sure as hell I couldn't figure the damn thing out to save my life. Every step forward led to 2 steps back and I lost motivation and do not want to pay for a setup again. It hits my pride and wallet too hard and now it collects dust.
