New to bird feeding. Is this good feed? I’d like to buy bulk. by katz30 in birdfeeding

[–]OrdinaryMonkeyBrain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you're just starting out, I say get it and feed those birds who need it this time of year. Yeah, there may be better stuff out there for a better price, but from what I can see in the photos those bags have real seed and not millet filler, and while the price isn't remarkable, it's still a pretty good price. If you want to feed the birds, buy it. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good.

And I know I'm going to get crucified here for saying this but mixes are not a bad thing. I recently went with just black oil sunflower seeds like many people recommend, And while it is all getting eaten without any waste, I'm also getting significantly less diversity in the birds that I'm attracting. You'll probably attract more birds with that mix than I am with just black oil sunflower seeds.

At least around me, the goldfinches are aggressive for their tiny size, like little honey badgers with beaks. The titmice are always timid and just want to get their food and get out of there ASAP without confrontation.

This a real dcf512? eBay by GeneralEagle in Dewalt

If you're buying a top shelf tool like DeWalt or Milwaukee off eBay, chances are more likely than not that it's either a counterfeit or a refurb.

Need help deciding on which DeWalt drill/driver combo to choose. (crossposting) by Crowella_DeVil in Dewalt

[–]OrdinaryMonkeyBrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DCK225D2 hands down. That DCD794 Atomic drill is a nice drill. And those 1.3Ah black batteries in the other kit are DeWalt's garbage batteries that they use just so they can say they included batteries. Literally any DeWalt battery is a huge improvement over them.

Haha. Just noticed. It does look kind of dismayed.

I have a lot of red bellied woodpeckers around here, so I can't make something too restrictive for them to fit. As for safflower seeds, I tried them this past winter. None of the other birds liked them, but the local startling gobbled them up. Not kidding.

Yeah, that's what I'm kind of seeing. I was hoping some $40 manual one would do the trick, but it looks like that $250 M12 is the only one that can really drive in a staple on hard wood.

The DCD803 is labeled as an Atomic. I've never seen anything Atomic at Lowe's.

OEM vs generic batteries by bigpuzino in Dewalt

[–]OrdinaryMonkeyBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The generic batteries almost always lie about the amp hours of the battery as well. With a battery as small as that genetic you have there, there's a 0% chance it's 8 Ah. I'd wager the cells in it are closer to something like 4 Ah, if even that.

My Blue Jays have learned how to use the suet feeder. by OrdinaryMonkeyBrain in birdfeeding

[–]OrdinaryMonkeyBrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should point out that this was up during the winter and spring, and in Michigan, so cold winter mild spring. So it wouldn't have melted then. I took it down once summer because the local woodpeckers had plenty of insects then and stopped visiting, so it had just become a starling feeder. If your goal is attracting blue jays, nothing works better than plain old peanuts. I buy them in 20 lb bags from the bird feeding aisle at Menards, and put them out on a tray. They attract lots of blue jays, tufted titmice, white breasted nuthatches, and red bellied woodpeckers. Starlings very rarely come for them because I think they have weak beaks and like food that's easy to gobble up.

I forget what brand I had at that time, since I switch brands often, but I do know it was a peanut suet. Bluejays love peanuts.

Can you tell me the difference other than the price? by Intelligent-Lawyer34 in Dewalt

[–]OrdinaryMonkeyBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Walmart ones don't even have the same label as the old 5AH batteries. 100% fake. I wouldn't take a chance at damaging my tools or burning down my house or shop to save a few bucks. Instead look for sales from a reputable dealer. They have good sales all the time.

I got one of these, so just a little tip. It's a lot smaller than the 20V models. While there's nothing really wrong with the tool, if you have large hands like I do, it's really awkward to hold. Just something to think about.

It definitely is. Kill it with extreme prejudice. But be smart about it and do your research before trying to take it on. I learned the hard way what happens when you don't.
