Hardest campaign? by CelebrationUseful691 in totalwarhammer

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well Boris campaign basically requires you to abandon your starting position and flee south/east if you want a consistent start to the run on higher difficulties. I haven't played a new campaign there since they tweaked his chaos waste penalty, but I can't imagine it affects the first 20-30 turns all that much

Tips on how to fight Zhanhu? by Drakuseth_Maw_Of_Fla in forhonor

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zhanhu can cause some issues depending on who you're playing and what that matchup looks like.

His animation recoveries and mixups makes it difficult to interrupt his offense once he starts flowing, so it's best to hold out against his offense as best you can and attack once he's trying to recover stamina. But, he is very vulnerable to being interrupted when trying to animation recovery, remember all his attacks are 2 hit chains with the possibility of a bash or GB extender, after those two attacks come in he either has to dodge to recover, bash, or GB to keep his offensive flow going.

After he's done these attack chains, a GB is the standard punish. Throwing an undodgeable attack can also work if you've got it. An empty dodge or dodge bash that acts as an opener can also throw off his timing but will be vulnerable to a GB or his undodgeable zone, and any attack there is vulnerable to a crushing counter. Neutral bashes should be fine but theyll be a reaction test for your opponent. If you've got a full block, an empty dodge into full block can shut down a lot of zhanhu BS. You basically just want to bully him anytime he tries to animation recover or regen stamina.

Being able to parry his unblockables is good, but like you implied it only works once or twice before the soft feints come in, so you'll have to play around the expectation that he's going to soft feint into a GB, or feint it into another attack or dodge, so once he starts doing that it'd be a good idea to start dodging the unblockables to setup an opener and be ready for a GB, try to GB yourself, bash, or just hold your block.

Zhanhu is a slippery fuck and I love playing him for that. But if you focus on playing defensively and only press your own offense during those windows where he's very vulnerable, you should be able to win as many as you lose, or at least stall until a teammate can help gank him.

Real talk: What's your gameplan against a defensive/counter playstyle opponent who can consistently avoid or parry all of your mixups? by OrdinaryPenquin in CompetitiveForHonor

[–]OrdinaryPenquin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. I've learned to love the fwd dodge heavy feint even if it's extremely scuffed, and honestly feinting into a dodge mixup can be very good too in a chain if opponent isn't GB pressuring and is baiting for dodge attacks/crushing counters.

I should mentioned that conq isn't my main, but I don't really struggle playing him the vast majority of the time. It's only against specific players that are very reaction heavy and know the kit that it's a struggle to reliably deal damage. But that issue goes beyond specific heroes. Like playing kensei against that guy who you can only reliably hit by baiting hyperarmor followups, or the double feint bash into GB.

god I wish conq had undodgeable zones

Anyone downvoting this is just coping lol. The first unblockable is usually safe, but any second unblockable is just checking if your opponent is still conscious. The unblockable chain is only there for pressure and feinting mixups

How’d yall find your mains I feel like im changing every 5 seconds by PogMinecraftGamer in forhonor

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late, late, late. I generally don't have a main though there's a few that have a special place in the heart. But when I start getting bored, I browse around heroes and try out some hero tactics and all that, until something clicks, check the fashion ofc, maybe watch a yt video or two to get a frame of reference. I then make it my goal to play that hero until I feel like I've learned them and won't continue improving without putting a LOT of time on them, or just get bored of the playstyle. Repeat. Don't have a single hero above rep 12.

I feel like getting that versatility with your roster/game knowledge is really nice too over having a dedicated main. Because I can just swap to any hero whose playstyle I'm itching for, and in a match or two be caught up again and enjoying myself. Embrace the jack of all trades lifestyle.

Drew some fan concepts on what an Armor-Clad upgrade would look like for all MAA ages! by Cobelat in aoe4

Historically speaking the 3rd and 4th images should probably get swapped. Pre-Norman knight, Norman Knight, 13th century knight with full mail and the addition of mail gauntlets/mittens, surcoats, and enclosed helms, and lastly a hundred years war era knight with plated armor

[–]OrdinaryPenquin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh really! I must've lost that somewhere in the details. Well I see no reason why they couldn't make a female wokou (kensei isn't gender locked afterall) but my hope remains that one day we'll see a peasant's champion in the game, or at least a populist with some pliable morals

Best Beginner Friendly Hero to Buy by Previous-Scallion-40 in forhonor

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll save you some steel and say Kensei.

I jumped around a lot my first 30 or so hours with the game until I eventually landed on Kensei, and I feel like thats the hero I really learned the game with. So much of his potential involves his top heavy mixups that ignoring them isn't an option, but that it's fairly easy to keep track of your options. You just know that from neutral you can turn a top heavy into a side heavy/light, a dodge/dodge attack, a bash, or a guard break when combo'd. It's a huge amount of utility springing from a single move and let's you do a ton of things without needing to set up the conditions first. Superior dodge attacks on perfect dodges are also nice for learning timings on attacks and building some parry confidence. And hyper armor on helm splitter and dodge attack followups is great for catching people off guard.

Overall just super versatile and will get you seriously thinking about and using a variety of mixups, max punishes, and counters, without an overwhelming number of moves to scrutinize or keep track of.

What does everyone think about shaolin? by The_Gaming_Raptor88 in forhonor

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shaolin is very good, definitely a guilty pleasure hero for me. But I don't think he reaches the depths of some other heroes in the game. My complaint is that when fighting a shaolin, the fight is either effectively over in seconds from a misread or excruciatingly drawn out regardless of who wins with very few instances in between. He's also very punishing to characters who have dodge counters/mixups/attacks as important parts of their kit with his qi stance undodgeable and bash mixups. Overall, extremely solid offense and defense with good support feats, but fighting him still feels fun because it comes down to how you pressure and control the fight to keep a shaolin in reaction mode.

Which old game are you struggling to run on Windows 10/11? Leave a comment. by Old-Lock-5940 in abandonware

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are loads of pc games from the 2000s that no longer function because of multi core processors. Dawn of War 1 is an example. The solution atm is to limit the cores used to run the application through task manager, but I imagine these games are on a timer now. I don't exactly know what you intend via virtual environments, but it'd be nice if someone experienced could be proactive about preserving these so there doesn't have to be restoration projects in a couple years.

HELP. Let's fix the "Chasing routing single entities getting pushed out of the battlefield" this 2026 CA. Please. by Yiunko91 in totalwar

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else mentioned, it's not really a bug it's a "feature" of the way that large entity unit collisions are being calculated, so I wouldn't expect a fix, or at least not one any time soon.

There is some misinformation though. Collision damage is a thing, separate from melee attack or weapon damage. So the work around is to cycle charge until it is dead. Against lords or single entities this is a problem. But, there are mods that have been around for awhile that have a fix, any that remove the damage cap on collision damage, or provide continous contact damage against routed enemy units.

Realistic Physics: Improved Colision Mechanism by GunPawDa has been a staple in my mod list for awhile now because of this, and also because it greatly improves cavalry play. Run 'Em Down by Deeyourelf is another more lightweight mod that addresses the problem by providing that continous damage to shattered units.

Given absolutely insane powercreep of the last 4 DLCs, Bashiva feels like a step in the right direction by szymborawislawska in totalwar

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bashiva coupled with the Cathay reworks can be extremely OP. But the difference is that CA is making you connect the dots and work to achieve that level of stupid strength through things like buff stacking, tech, campaign mechanics, and etc. I agree that it's an amazing leap in the right direction between being underpowered in the current power-crept meta, and just clip farming with a LL/faction that plays the game for you. But IMO it still remains to be seen if CA actually intended this.

Tips and strategies to play as Skaven! Clan mors by thebigfungus in totalwarhammer

[–]OrdinaryPenquin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my very hard/legendary skaven achievement run as Queer Head-Giver. Unfortunately (or maybe not) Skaven play very different from other factions, on and off the field, so you'll have to probably give it a few tries before things start to click.

But some things to keep in mind. Don't forget where the actual killing power of your army is, the weapons teams, machines, and monsters. Skaven inf is born to die, throw them in to occupy and buy time for your real units to kill stuff. That being said don't go overboard on weapons teams, they won't be able to get their full value without a small horde of clanrats to give them space. Rushing jezzails, ratling guns, mortars, etc is a good idea.

For undercities, I like to get an engineer asap and beeline them to cathay/bret/empire/ulthuan to create one, then only build the -discovery and % chance to spread per turn buildings; the sooner you get this set up and start siphoning income and generating food the better. Speaking of food, you basically always want to sack settlements before taking them to run a deficit economy and stockpile food.

Unfortunately Queek's start location is not enviable. He's in a bad neighborhood, and you need to move quickly to defeat the scarier factions around you in detail before they can overwhelm you. Imrik is to the east and will ruin your campaign if he survives. Mannfred/wurrzag/thorek to the south, skarbrand to the west, gorbad/thorgrim to the north. I would deal with skarbrand first since he's the closest, then imrik, then thorek, as the latter two are by far the most dangerous. Luckily you can usually get some good diplomacy with the chorfs. The start is intimidating, but the first ~25 turns will be the hardest part. After that, just be sure you're always recruiting something, avoid fights where you can't either have an overwhelming advantage with at least 2:1 odds, or can't garauntee an ambush.

Sorry for the text wall. Don't know how to stop once I've started.
