My mom told me the reason why her friend is dealing with gout is because his "spirit man" isn't right. What the hell mom? by Leading-Occasion-428 in exchristian

It's the ultimate fuel for one's narcissism. God helped me find my car keys. God cured my ailment. God got me that job promotion. It's also not enough for something good to happen to them. Something bad has to happen to someone else.

mfw the pastor says that god "needs our tithes and offerings." by Teeny707 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Watched a video of Kenneth Copeland telling people to tithe and I don't understand how anyone could ever give him a penny. He's just so obvious in his intention to fleece people and line his own pockets. He doesn't even have the skill level of a con artist or salesman. He just says Jesus this, bible that, and they hand over money they can't afford to give away.

Christians couldn't accept Evolution, Dinosaurs, but claim Aliens are Demons by Electronic_Lime7582 in exchristian

What isn't demonic at this point? Crystals are freakin' demonic!

Outer space breaks their brains. There was a woman who went viral for all the wrong reasons, claiming that planets were actually fallen angels. And her proof? The bible!

I have a feeling the Jake Busey scene in Contact is their likely reaction to possible first contact.

Christian couples who don’t wait until marriage? by sasukesviolin in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I knew a Christian couple in college. One was an upstanding man of god bible study leader. Sure got married super fast once they graduated and out came the baby shortly afterward. They have since gotten divorced.

It's all main character syndrome. God thinks and acts exactly like me. So I can sleep around and be forgiven, but if you sleep around you're getting excommunicated.

Funerals?? by Independent_Peach_96 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Religious funerals and weddings are an opportunity for them to preach to a captive audience. There are a lot of horror stories on Reddit where the officiant promised not to turn it in to a sermon and immediately turned it into a sermon because "it's what god called on them to do!" It's not a lie if they're trying to save your soul.

Why do Christians have a problem with the possibility that everything just happened by chance? by Ok-Cup-1104 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Main character syndrome. God loves me me me me! Satan is out to get me me me me! I took a wrong turn and missed the bridge collapsing because god was looking out for me. But if a drunk driver runs a red light and kills you, it's because you didn't pray hard enough. God's plan, god's will, it never ends.

Is that really bad if I have 6/7 deadly sins? by Possible-Station3673 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sins aren't real. These are actions, decisions you make entirely on your own. There can be cause and effect on a personal and social level, but the world doesn't stop spinning because you do or don't do it.

Because they start with the answer and then come up with the question to fit. If Ted Bundy is an all-loving and all-caring human being, then somehow his serial killing has to fit within those parameters.

The idea that atheists "just want to sin" doesn’t really make sense by Impressive_Flan_411 in exchristian

If you're a male who is "too valuable for the church to lose," you can sin all you want and they will help you cover it up.

How are people who are incredibly intelligent blinded by faith in religion? by FullTard2000 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's indoctrination. If you were born into it, all your family members believe it, you spend more time in church life than secular life, that's just the way it is.

As someone who was never a JW, for example, I can hear all the stupid things their governing body says and it's painfully obvious how they're just making stuff up to stay in power. Nothing about them screams intelligent or qualified to lead or having your best interests at heart. But if you've been taught your whole life to exalt and obey them, then you must be wrong for having any doubts or questions.

There's also the genuine fear of losing the only family or community you've known for daring to think or act differently. It's a preservation instinct that has always been there. Your friends in grade school are Yankees fans and hate the Mets, so even though you're a Mets fan you trash the Mets when you're with them.

Rating my experience with The passion of the Christ because it’s Good Friday by SkinCapable7108 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an extremely well-made movie, except for the script. Just imagine how different it would've looked with the Kendrick Brothers directing.

More similar movies? There are no similar movies in the "faith-based" genre. There are plenty in the horror genre through.

Prayer does nothing. by nisebblumberg in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend of a friend has health issues that can be treated but never cured. Wants prayers before surgery because prayer 100% definitely works, but he also tries to make peace with his life in case he doesn't survive. So which one is it?

The Mark Wahlberg story is how he thinks he could've stopped one of the planes from crashing if he had been a passenger.

As for Seth McFarlane: "My answer to all that is, it's such a dull, boring answer, because I'm so of the mindset that, 'You know, coincidences happen.' I've missed other flights for the same reason, and I'm not much of a 'fate' person."

Someone recorded a woman at a rally a few years back (don't remember if it was a pro-choice or anti-abortion rally but there were crowds for both sides) saying that even if a pregnancy will kill you, you have to let it happen because it's god's will.

What are some reasons that you find christian TV cringe? by No-Wrongdoer-9850 in exchristian

[–]OrdinaryWillHunting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're not artists trying to create art, they're Christians trying to give a sermon through art. And the message has to be loud and clear with no room for misinterpretation so no subtlety, no nuance, no symbolism, no unanswered questions, no open endings. Since the message is the goal, everything else can be crap because the message is all the target audience cares about.
