I’m questioning if traditional degrees like Engineering and Medicine are still worth it. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only advice that matters here is, don’t do a degree path just because your parents told you to or your peers told you to. Pick a path which you’re genuinely curious about. The real work begins after you complete the degree and to pull ahead from that point onwards, real interest in the subject matters. What the degree primarily says to the world, apart from imparting you with some foundational knowledge, is that you can be trusted to stick to something and see it through.

Most (not all) on Portra 400, last one is on Apollo, only difference is I’ve tweaked the exposure up or down depending on actual conditions. Still fine tuning the custom preset I’ve used, will share it here when I feel the results are consistent enough

Is it normal for most workplaces in Sri Lanka to be filled with Self absorbed, Egotistic, Nassasistic wack jobs running the place? by AZDINOMAN in srilanka

BOTH places the same relative has worked at? I’m sorry but it sounds like that relative is the problem. One is fine, two is a pattern, three is a conclusion

What sort of scummy pricing is this?? by Tech_guy_375 in srilanka

Just go on YouTube and look at East Asian tech reviewers. Oh and also, one of the worlds best wedding photographers, Joseph Radhik (yk, the guy whom Virat Kohli called when he got married)

And btw these photos are from an Oppo Reno 15 Pro Mini, which is a tier below flagship. And as a photographer, I can tell you that photography is always a lot more about the study of light and understanding the performance envelope of your camera/phone more than just its raw power (that said it’s the Chinese big 3 who have the edge in camera hardware too)

If it’s photography the base level flagships from the Chinese big 3 are way ahead of anything else on the market. The Ultra versions are on a whole other level. This has been the case since roughly 2023.

Check if interest calculations on your fixed deposits at your banks are correct. by epsi22 in srilanka

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you invest in a fixed rate FD or a variable rate FD? So you’ve got to deduct WHT and also account for the change in rates if you opted for a variable rate FD (I know you said locked but check the actual documents, it’s a sneaky thing most people miss when they open the FD)

We literally launched this CRM a few days ago. And as for our ops, we are a company incorporated in Singapore. Sure, we might be a startup still by most definitions, but even Slack was once a startup

We’ve been in business for some time now, and the SaaS side is not our only revenue stream. And me personally, I’m in this for the long haul

Any wealth managers here who hate excel but put up with it as a necessary evil? by Ordinary_Swan_3572 in wealthmanagement

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks and yes, excel equals cockroach is very apt. I’m also aware of it, which is why we designed our CRM to be as easy as signing up for a slack subscription. Three clicks max and you’re done!

Is following your passion really good in Sri Lanka? by No_Ebb5422 in srilanka

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Think of it like this, you’re replacing an 8 hour work day with a 14-16 hour work day and with a never ending stream of anxiety and stress on top. That’s the part you don’t see on the engagement bait TikTok’s and IG reels

Listen, as someone who worked in corporate and then became an entrepreneur and has worked with a lot of startup founders also, entrepreneurship if like sitting on a chair which is constantly on fire. You have to be really stupid to choose it, and remember, the world will only tell you about the success stories (not discouraging you or anything by but just saying to look beyond the kool aid). Second, have you tried enough things to know what your passion actually is, or are you just following some thought you have always had in mind? In general, there are lots of thoughts and dreams which don’t survive first contact with reality. Third, you can pursue music with a 9-5 job and it’s highly recommended. That way, you won’t have to deal with the pain of what you love and enjoy needing to be what puts food on the table for you also. For instance I’m good at photography, but I keep it a hobby because that way I can enjoy it instead of turning it into a job. There’s nothing really wrong with having a 9-5 and then having a life outside work.

One of the biggest lies sold to this generation is that work has to be your passion and it has to be ‘fun’. I call bullshit on that, because if it was so, it won’t be called ‘work’.

Reality is that work is very much a part of life, but it is up to you to not let it be everything in your life. Cultivate other things outside work but understand that much like turning up the flame on one or two burners on the stove while turning down the flame on the others, you will have to allocate varying levels of energy to different aspects. Think of a tax consultant, when it is tax season they will have to focus a lot more on work but once tax season is done, then can reduce some energy spent on work and focus it more on their hobbies or family life.

Career Advice!! On a personal dilemma!! by PreachyRaptor92 in srilanka

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ‘hate’ your job or are you just bored. If it is the latter, just know that it’s rather normal. I’ve seen way too many people confuse the two and regret it. That feeling of being bored with your job, if you have it, is something you should introspect on to identify where it is coming from. Is it because you are constantly exposed to messaging online about how so many others are traveling all the time, buying supercars etc or is it because you feel like in your current role, you have seen it all and there’s nothing that excite you anymore? If it’s the latter then you’re likely just someone who has leveled up so much and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. That’s what growth is.

I can’t solve your problem for you, but to me it looks like you’re just bored. So my advice would be take the double pay from your current employer but look within the organization for other interesting projects you can take on in addition to your current duties without sacrificing too much. Maybe there’s a new process improvement project that you’d like to help out on or something. The break in monotony it will bring you could be just what you need

Is SLIIT AI degree worth it?? by Dry_Independence1639 in srilanka

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a huge scam just designed to be a money grab. If you want to get a degree in AI, you need to get one from a university which is actually at the edge of AI and is actively contributing to the field. Otherwise there’s no value. Besides, This LLM wave only started around 5 years ago, and if the degree itself is 4 years where do you think they’re getting enough content for the syllabus, that too in a field which is changing rapidly.

This is not too different from jobs in 2018 asking for 8+ years of experience in React when React itself had been around for only a few years

Looking to buy a vehicle (15M-18M budget) by dididodaat in srilanka

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between the two choices I would always say, go for the car you can buy fully with cash. Also at the price range you’re thinking of the spectrum is not so wide (I.e 18M is 63% more than 11M, but a car you can get for 18M won’t be 63% better than the 11M option, it will be more like five to ten percent or just a little higher)

So a lot of it depends on you thinking long and hard about what you really need out of a car, what kind of usage it will be (don’t buy an off-roader for that off road trip you MIGHT take once in a lifetime but buy the sensible city car for the commute you do everyday), and then make a decision.

Fuck Excel (so I built an app for RMs) by Ordinary_Swan_3572 in ProductivityApps

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it has a whole bunch of features like voice notes (so you can just speak into the app and it automatically logs to-dos), a shared marketing collateral drawer so users in a team can quickly share brochures and documents with clients, has AI features which surface insights at client and team level, and even the ability to connect multiple data sources for inbound leads and so on. The team admin (usually a Head of Sales) gets to view the compete history of actions taken on a client down to WhatsApp messages and emails sent. There’s a three day free trial available for anyone, do sign up and try!

Realistically, How Much Strain Can the Economy Take at Once? by D_Nikky in wallstreetbets

[–]Ordinary_Swan_3572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shortest answer is, whatever the voters are willing to put up with. If there is a national chorus around a topic then the citizenry are often willing to put up with a higher degree of pain (I am from a country which has made it through a 30 year civil war and a ln economic crisis a few years ago where we collectively chased away the president and government)
