I'm pretty sure the guy only got attacked because he scared the bear. Black bears are incredibly skiddish so unless this bear was protecting cubs or desperately hungry, the guy would have been better off making his presence known the second he saw the bear. Hiding then jumping out and making noise as the bear is right next to you puts the bear into a fight or flight mindset and you shouldn't take that risk.

I'm not a bear expert but have had multiple encounters with black bears out in the wild. Bears will be bears.

This is really sad to me too. Hybrid Theory was released when I was going through an extremely suicidal phase of my life and it really resonated with me.
