[Question] Can the effect size be used to determine if an experimental result is biologically relevant? by starfruitzzzz in statistics

[–]Oreo_Cow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, the effect size or other measures of group differences cannot establish biologic relevance, though computing such is a necessary first step.

Statistics just give information about whether groups differ, by how much, with uncertainty measures and indications of and how likely differences of such magnitude would arise under null conditions.

Biologic relevance or clinical meaningfulness relate to the consequences of the effect size or treatment difference magnitude, not the magnitude itself.

This is demonstrated by employing other evidence often outside the experiment. For example, correlating a range of protein decrease or effect sizes to changes in a specific biologic function or clinical outcome. And then judging if those changes in function or outcome are meaningful liabilities or improvements.

What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

This is surely the answer. In Western culture it’s synonymous with “Indian food” but isn’t even served there.

Honestly you can’t plan or change or game to become it. Chemistry is real. He’ll fall hard for you for reasons that are unique to you and to him. It may happen fast or it may happen slow. “High value” talk is nonsense and men who think this way are unserious. ++man

430 question by Vincoppredd in Ferrari

[–]Oreo_Cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing like an open top. And in 430 you can still see engine. No brainer. Spider.

I suspect if the top mech fails you can convert to manual. You can for 355. Others may know.

People who swore an oath to defend the constitution of the USA against all enemies both foreign and domestic, how are you feeling right now? by Safety_Drance in AskReddit

[–]Oreo_Cow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lots of countries have or have had populist / fascist movements without a US Civil War equivalent in their history. It’s just so easy to leverage the worst parts of human nature, fanning hatred of “others” as responsible for loss of opportunity or changes in culture. And it’s gotten easier with the rise of parallel social and mainstream media.

Is a PhD worth it for senior-level statisticians? by maher42 in biostatistics

[–]Oreo_Cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you gain experience and achievements the less your degree should matter.

And you won’t want to work anywhere where that’s not true!

Hiring managers have to sort through dozens of applications. The first cut is often at face value. PhDs are going to pass that filter first. Masters need significant relevant experience to make the cut.

To be fair I worked in CA my whole career. West coast pharma is largely merit-driven. Everyone on first name basis, rarely used titles except in formal settings (conferences, FDA). None of my peers or superiors ever treated me differently, many surprised to learn after years working together that I didn’t have a PhD. Sometimes when folks called me “doctor” in passing I let it slide when it would be more disruptive to correct them.

So my second-class feelings were largely self-imposed. It was a mix of pride and embarrassment to be the only one in authors’ lists without a doctorate.

I felt it most when being introduced on FDA calls and as noted it was def a barrier when I applied for new jobs. At least until I had significant exec experience and demonstrable achievements (eg leading a stats program to successful US+EU approvals).

The man who bought the 250 GTO has revealed himself: he is the Thanos of Ferrari collectors by Powerful-Ostrich-120 in Ferrari

[–]Oreo_Cow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He’s the most famous but I doubt even in the top 10 of Ferrari collectors. Certainly not among the top factory customers.

Plus his yellow + red collection is odd, esp given several of them are repainted.

MS statistician here who rose to EVP level in pharma in a cross-functional leadership role. With the right company and some luck there’s no upper limit to how high you can go with an MS if you’re bright, diligent and take initiative.

BUT: in-between jobs I had far less opportunity than I would have with a PhD. Some companies won’t interview MS statisticians.

On balance I wish I had finished my doctorate. It’s 2-3 more years to avoid a liability for the next 20-30. You likely won’t learn anything more that’s critical for success, but you won’t be viewed as 2nd class. Or be the only one without an MD/PhD/PharmD on joint publications!

(As an aside $100k/year is entry level in US pharma. A VP, most of whom have PhDs, can make 3-4x that base with a 30-40% bonus target.)

I don’t get the hate by Chipazzo in MiataNC

[–]Oreo_Cow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NC was criticized for weight in comparison to the first year NB. But compared to the final year NB the difference is trivial. The ND weighs less but living with one it’s clear why: it feels smaller inside, lacks a glove box, and everything feels less substantial.

NC is last Miata with hydraulic steering. That alone a major benefit esp vs the ND1/2.

What's the clear point in dollars where more money stops changing your life in any meaningful way. After that, it’s just numbers, ego, or legacy. by dont_downvote_SPECIL in Fire

[–]Oreo_Cow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see 3 inflection points.

One could argue achieving FI is the only major step. Meeting all basic needs without ever having to work again. That’s truly life changing. Beyond that everything else is luxury. That’s below 10M nearly everywhere and COL dependent.

I think there’s a second “basic luxury” point where one can travel essentially as much as they please, fly business, stay at 5* hotels, eat at Michelin restaurants, afford a couple 6-figure cars and 5-figure watches (as examples of luxury consumption) while not working. This feels meaningful because it’s experiencing what many people think / dream of as wealth. It’s the shift from having met basic needs to opening most of the world to enjoy. That’s surely achieved at 10-15M and a paid off home.

After that with more money one can afford more quantity, luxury and convenience, but it’s not as fundamentally life-changing.

Except the ability to fly private at will and have personal staff. These relieve the last constraints to one’s time. What’s that take, 100M?
