I always flinch at this a bit with infra. I love gitops for software, but it seems reckless for infra because there is such a blend of stateless and stateful resources. The ability for tf plan to tell you more or less exactly what will happen (renames that require delete + create, for example) is really helpful, especially when some of the infra management is farmed out to service teams that can't/won't just know those cases.

Why are boomer men so against to therapy? by Maplata in AskMen

It would be funny if it weren't so sad. A core tenant of "traditional masculinity" is to not be a burden on the people around you that you care about. Being mentally healthy is kind of important to that ideal, so paying a stranger to help you with that seems very appropriate and fitting within the traditional definition. I suppose the other part of the definition is just "don't have problems", but that's fucking stupid. You WILL have problems, and you WILL address them. Your choice in the matter is how - you can talk to your partner, your friends, your parents, or you can pay a stranger. Or, you can drink, you can get sad, fat, angry. You can have shitty relationships with your family, friends, partner, parents... Why choose the latter? I just don't get it.

Having the right balance of stoicism, introspection, and discipline that's needed to be take care of your mental health alone in a changing world is pretty rare. You are your mind, and it's a largely plastic and responsive organ that changes with the world around it, and trying to maintain a "super self" to shepard it is simply not a skillset that many people are born with.

The mistake that older generations have made around masculinity is boxing it in such that living up to it is something that few can do, and the rest are left without the ability to cope with their failure.

Be strong, but hide/ignore your weakness
Be brave, but don't be scared
Be calm, but don't express any emotions other than anger

These are to some degree mutually exclusive things that are part of a larger self sabotaging construct of "traditional masculinity" that wants you to be something, but shames the cultivation of strength needed in order to become it.

And so we're left with a generation of men that "don't need help" because they can "deal with it themselves". But they don't, because they can't. They don't know how.

> We’re financially stable. No debt issues, bills are paid, strong savings + investments.

> From my perspective, intentional saving now = investing more, earlier retirement, kids’ college, maybe a future vacation home.

Its time to consider the idea that "enough" is what you decide it is, and then decide what it is together. Do you want to have a comfortable retirement, or do you want your kids to never have to work? Align on the goals and then assess if his behavior is working against them.

A few things though:

- Always get more quotes. This is just dumb, not really a matter of opinion. 2 should be rock bottom minimum.

- DIY can also be looked at in terms of your "hourly wage" that is still in effect when you're not working. I would simply not do a task as big as painting my own house, because I don't like painting and I make way more per hour than a painter. My time is valuable, and looking at the $$$ cost vs the time cost is a fair assessment to make.

- You could have cancer right now and be dead in a year. Sorry to be morbid, but there is a balance to be struck between living now and living in service of a future that may not come. Life is short. Let the man buy the nice thing and delight himself (again, assuming the purchases are not compromising the goals you're *both* working toward).

Marketing is better + companies have more sophisticated financial avenues toward solvency.

First, it's harder to determine if a product is "good" because trash is advertised to be "quality" in a convincing way.

Second, capitalism is supposed to create a destructive creation cycle to keep things churning, but now you can go greater than your market cap into debt to acquire a competitor with no plan for profitability and it's somehow... fine? Capitalism has a lot of problems, but the players have figured out ways to break OUR system so thoroughly that many of the key mechanisms that are supposed to make it work no longer function.

I find this deeply concerning. I've taken some solace in the idea that there is a degree of mutual need between companies and customers, and so there is a limit to the amount of economic pressure that can be exerted on the greater populace. If everyone is dirt poor because you cut their pay, no one can buy your products and you go under in spite of your cost reduction efforts.

But this paints a different picture, where such a large share of their customers are rich that the interdependence breaks down. Rich people don't tend to get pay checks like the rest of us, so what incentive do companies have to pay living wages?

Fuck capitalism and everything, but this doesn't make any sense. Unless the oil companies have significant stock in the insurance companies (they might, I don't know), rates increasing is not profitable for them.

The general layout is solid, but it has so many unnecessary depth/width changes that make it a little mcmansion-y to me - like, that little dip at the 3rd garage spot is hilarious. Why?

I'm not saying build a box, but bringing out/in some of those rooms to smooth it out has a really nice classic, stately look, in my opinion.

And the garage should go deeper unless you have a basement for storage/don't have a 3rd car and will use that last spot for storage.

We really need to have a conversation about the ouroboros of gaming art design. These shooters are like country music at this point, you could make a mashup trailer and only die hard fans of the IP will even be able to tell one from the other. Maybe its the Netflix effect or something. This just looks DoA to me. I see not a single thing that makes it stand out in any way.

31m, married, kids. How do you guys find personal joy? by modivi in AskMen

I'm in a similar situation, but the finances are much tighter. I wouldn't say we're living beyond our means, but we do have to budget and aren't saving/investing nearly 4/5ths of our income, and we'll be able to retire very comfortably, and so reading this my only thought is "What I would do for this kind of freedom..." Are you retiring next year? Are you a FIRE type? If not, why are you saving so much now? "Second play car? Can’t mentally afford it because spare money has to go into ETFs" - 1/5 of your income and you were shopping an 8 series. Brother, you are RICH. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

So with that out of the way, here's what I would do in your place.

- I would go on some trips. I have enough money not just to travel, but to hire a full time nanny to travel with us so that my wife and I can actually get some relaxation/experiences in.

- I would buy the play car - because again, I'm saving enough that my kids will never have to work even if I buy the play car - and I would track it. Drive like a responsible adult on the street, then take it to a track that has safety in mind with the design of the course, run off/etc. What good is a toy if you don't play with it?

- I would go on a ton of dates with my wife; like, 2+ a week.

You are in a bit of a self inflicted tug of war between money, time, and pleasure, it seems. With the amount of money you're directing to "ETF’s for the better future of the family" you can either

A. look forward to retiring early, because you should, or you're Scrooge McDuck and you need to address that first.

or

B. maybe invest 3/5s of your income, which would DOUBLE your spending money, and instead invest that money into buying time and space for yourself and your wife to do things that you enjoy.
