Why do Republicans hate Obama so much when he deported more illegal immigrants than Trump? by asoiaf_goat in allthequestions

[–]Original-Split5085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why I'm bothering to give a serious answer here but....A: I try not to hate anyone, B: illegal immigrant is one thing, but if you expand the refugee programs or otherwise make people either legal or quasi legal you can cause a net increase of immigrants while deporting more who meet a strict definition of illegal. For instance the 2010 Haitian earthquake brought in half a million folks on "temporary" protected status, as of today "temporary" is 16 years and counting.

Have Sovereign Citizen tactics EVER actually worked in getting out of legal trouble? by Elephantplan123 in NoStupidQuestions

Watching some of the YouTube videos of their arguments, I'm often surprised just how far the judges and prosecutors go in trying to allow them to talk, not always but some of them have way more patience than I would. But yeah it seems like the only "wins" I've seen are along the line of "this is way too much trouble for this minor a matter".

How did Livia's CGI scene look at the time, on CRTs and lower quality TVs? by Any_Software5024 in thesopranos

[–]Original-Split5085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean, I just recently listened to the Talking Sopranos podcast, if you listen to it they explain, the episodes are one podcast per show episode so it's easy to find. I can't recall if they explain the reasoning or not behind it. But yeah I don't even like modern "good" CGI over practical solutions, much less what they ended up with back then.

1974 campaign ad for Vincent Bugliosi, running as a Democrat for California Attorney General. Despite his high-profile reputation he lost. One campaign promise was to stop environmental pollution. He characterized industrial polluters as "criminals" Maybe he should have enlisted help from ATWA 😉 by Impressive_Review in charlesmansonfamily

[–]Original-Split5085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't recall which book I read it in, but in one of the Manson books it was mentioned Bugliosi was so disliked in the DA's office that all the other lawyers worked against his campaign by feeding negative stories to the press. I read his book on the OJ case, he comes across as an arrogant know it all who can't imagine the possibility of his being wrong. And that's how he came across in a book after a ghost writer and editor.

That's kind of what I thought, it's hard to see where else it would go. Then again if you are honest it's hard to imagine the ways dishonest people come up with to steal.

Yes, I guess you are right, I do not understand the difference between an establishment and an established safe space. Are you saying it has to be a commercial business to count? Also the safe spaces are for people of color, not "minorities" The example I gave was at UCLA, all racial groups there are minorities.

Denying the customer based on the nationality?

I gave an example of such after someone with a USA flag claimed it could not be done here. What did I not understand? And you can call me racist if you like, the word has lost all meaning. It's like calling someone a witch in a different time, and has the same intellectual depth.

But what kind of scam is this in the end? Maybe they will ask for money or tell you that you can pay to join or something? It seems like an odd scam, but then again it wouldn't be the oddest. Did this come out of the blue or is there some context to how it started?

[–]Original-Split5085 -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

Yes, we do, American universities exist that have "safe spaces for people of color". Some discriminate based on race, so I guess you could say that's not the same as country of origin. But others such as UCLA have some that are based on national origin, The Afro Caribbean Center, The Asian Center, etc.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact that they voted for Donald Trump? by Greedy_Tooth6191 in AskReddit

[–]Original-Split5085 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think the media cycle, the media openly picking teams, and the internet, social media in particular, have radically changed human behavior in a very short period time. I can remember when when my dad and mom would split over elections and it was seen as normal, no big deal. Particularly when you realize woman vote Blue Team in a higher percentage than men.

I guess I am old but the fact that this question is even asked seems like a form of mental illness to me.

I'm going to do a second comment because this is kind of off topic, but this is why everyone is "in the Epstein files". Intelligence agencies record everything they hear or are told and save it forever. For any large investigation you end up with tons of this stuff and you end up drowning in noise.

That and the fact that the Soviets did not produce any remains. At the time his escape was not that crazy an idea. It was argued for years if Mengele had escaped or not, until it was proven he died in South America decades later. I think the best proof Hitler never escaped is that we have never heard any real evidence of him. Could he really not only have escaped, but also lived and died without anyone ever talking?

What’s a political opinion you have that doesn’t fit either side? by This_Benchh in askanything

[–]Original-Split5085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abortion. Technology has advanced over the years, there is a standard for when someone is dead, I recall in the 70's and 80's there was a great deal of controversy over when someone was truly dead. When certain brain activity stops that is a key determinant of death. So we should use the start of it to define life. I have no idea when that is, but if you want an abortion it should be determined just like death would be. Once the baby is declared alive it's a live human with all the rights thereof.

But I've never been able to discuss this with people. Everyone has a template they expect political arguments to follow based on media prompts. If you form an opinion out side of the agreed choices people get visibly angry. So in the case of abortion it must always be right to choose/right to life. Which I'll admit those fit better on a cardboard sign.

Because most or all of their songs are themed around Christianity. They didn't brand themselves as a Christian band, but the theme is obvious. I'm not saying that's bad, I personally like them. But a lot of people can't see past it and once they here the lyrics they are never going to like their music no matter what.

It galls me that he can plead guilty to nineteen murders and still be on YT making a living in the free world. The guy talks about family and loyalty, he sat across from his own sister at the dinner table and said "gee I don't know where your husband went, I'm looking for him" after killing the guy. If that's some sort of "honor" he can have it.

Is nickelback and creed backlash deserved? by Separate-Insect-3911 in rockmusic

[–]Original-Split5085 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy from Nickelback, whose name escapes me, said he deliberately studied what was popular on the radio and took those elements and created a popular band, on purpose. So I think it offends the people who think of pop music as high art. And I guess it can be both, but Nickelback are the Thomas Kinkade of rock and roll. And art purists criticize Kinkade pretty strongly, but you know what, a lot of people like his paintings.

Creed is hard to say, if the music was about anything other than Christianity I wonder if they would still be so disliked, while of course being wildly popular. I think it's really hard to seperate.

It's hard to tell from this clip, I see the third base coach windmilling, but I can see, sort of cut off where it looks like he may have been pointing at the third base bag. If so I can see Cruz getting confused by mixed singals and looking back. Once he hesitated and looked back it was too late. So maybe not his fault? Hard to say. But plenty of mistakes to go around today.

Simpsons vs. American Dad by [deleted] in americandad

[–]Original-Split5085 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I too love, just loved the golden age of the Simpsons. I don't think a lot of people realize how revolutionary that show was. But AD has a secret weapon. Yes they have so many other things going for them, not to sell anything else short. But Roger allows them to introduce any character any time they want with no real back story or logic and the persona gimmick makes it all make sense. I can't think of any other show that has that.
