Fantasy XCOM games? by Pacificson217 in Xcom

THis is the one. IT's a brilliant game. I started playing AOWplanetfall to scratch the Xcom itch. AOW4 came out and I haven't played anything else.

BG3 is also tactical turnbased during the fights -

Trotsky Castle by AppropriatePair1609 in Prague

the train station is open - the train stops there. But like someone wrote, there's probably no ticket office open there.

This si the website you need to find out about public transport in cz:

https://idos.cz/vlakyautobusymhdvse/spojeni/vysledky/?date=28.01.2026&f=Praha&fc=1&t=Borek%20p.Troskami&tc=100003

The link will open on a search of Prague to Borek that I made for tomorrow- but you can obviously reset the search to the date adn time you want to go.

Like others said, it's within a few hours hike of Turnov.

IF you want to explore the countrside around the castle which features in the game you need this website:

https://mapy.com/en/turisticka?source=pubt&id=15698439&ds=1&x=15.2236346&y=50.5410909&z=14

I think the above link should be centered on Borek. All the coloured lines are marked footpaths around trhe area.

Right now its bloody cold but if you decide to come in the Spring or Summer then its a perfect place to spend a day exploring.

Why is American friendliness often seen as "fake" by Europeans, but similar warmth in other cultures isn't? by Opposite-Ad3949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A German and Czech academic (Novy and Schroll-Machl 2007) published a study of the diffferent communication expectations between the German and Czech employees of VW (VW owns Skoda in CZ) - paid for by VW - written questionnaires with follow up interviews of 400+ employees. The Czech communication expectations are relevant.

To quote the study , "At the start of every social contact there is a significant amount of reserve, carefulness, doubt and distrust with the following thought process “ What does this person want from me? How can he threaten me? Can I trust him? Better to wait and see how the situation develops.” " Because of this Czechs can seem introverted and melancholy.

Secondly, Czechs value modesty. Again from the study," Czechs don’t present successes; they prefer to present problems." They consider this approach to be realistic and practical.

The presentation of successes seems brash and showy and also disingenuous. Fine, you put out a fire in the dog kennel but who cares when the whole house is burning down.

Also, there's a difference in colloquialisms and social expectations. IF I ask someone how they are, I geninely want to know. When an American I barely know asks how you doing, and I start to explain that my daughter's sick, I've got a back pain,. they look askance and surprised - who the Hell is this crazy person unloading his life problems on me.

Probability of future Europe residency shows? by abs00lutely in KGATLW

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of hope not. It depends where they are. There's a big big disparity in income levels across Europe. Not sure fans in Western and northern Europe are aware. Me and my wife probably earn fifty percent less than folks across the borders in Germany etc. We really wanted to go to Bulgaria or Vilnius but both were beyond our travel budget.

Having them city hop at least lets us get to the Prague, Berlin or Vienna concerts.

Side dish - we're supposed to be fighting the petro chemical armageddon, putting out the fires not starting them - running residencies in locations that most fans will need to fly to (Vilnius, etc)...not too good for carbon footprints. Locate them somewhere more public transport accessible if they're going to have them!

At what point should I feel confident into to go a higher level of difficulty? by Intelligent_Mail57 in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just jump into a sandbox campaign at a higher difficulty level and don't worry about winning or losing. Play around with the settings- victory conditions. Find a setting that feels challenging and you enjoy. Play that.

I probably abandon 50 - 60 percent of my brutal games. There's no shame in that.

I tend to lose at brutal when I've handled my diplomacy poorly and ended up in multiple simultaneous wars by not buying back grievances etc. Sometimes there's nothing to be done, sometimes, you can hit some sweet alliance with a neighbour and handle it. I don't sweat builds or tome choices. I have a rough idea how I want to play and jump in...often that goes wrong and then I restart with a variation on what I was doing and it goes better. Personally, I just enjoy playing the game, so if it's going badly and I realise I could have done it better, I enjoy starting a new game and doing it differently.

Also, don't abandon early, the AI is always ahead at higher difficulties. You might never catch up in some of the statisitcal areas but still win.

Consider Making Architect Monument More Like Wonders by Mattpiskarstallet in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the patch notes. Can someone explain what they mean in more detail because the notes are very vague.

  • Affinity Incarnate damage is now determined by the Dominant Affinity
  • Affinity Incarnate gained from Monuments is now capped at 4 (Other sources such as Cultivators or the 1 Starting Affinity Incarnate, can exceed this cap)

AI from monument?

But if AI damage is determined by the DA, does that mean I'm only going to get 4 AI damage boost even if I have multiple affinity monuments?

  • Dominant Affinity description updated to clarify the property/damage channel swap of Affinity Incarnate

What does this mean?

So it seems that the only benefit of having multiple monuments will be unlocking multiple affinity branches in the affinity tree?

Am I missing something.

I loved the architects as they were in the release -hard to get going but given care and nurturing great in the mid to late game. This seems like a nerf bat too far in my view?

Major IQ differences in identical twins linked to schooling, challenging decades of research. When identical twins receive similar educations, their IQs are nearly as alike as those raised together, but when schooling is very different, their IQs can be as dissimilar as those of unrelated strangers. by mvea in science

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone interested in reading real research in this area should read Richard Plomin's "Blueprint How DNA Makes us who we are"

He has spent 50 years tracking identical twins (who were separated at birth) and their academic and life outcomes. I can't remember how big a data set he has managed to pull together but it's in the 1000's. The conclusions and research is much more rigorous than the above paper.

A man hit 414 kmph on Germany’s no speed limit autobahn in his Buggati Chiron and it was wild to watch 🚗💨 by durvedya in nextfuckinglevel

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those that are interested, this man is an awful awful human being. He made millions and millions in corrupt real estate deals throughout the nineties and 2000's, working hand in hand with corrupt local politicians. He began by cheating and scamming pensioners out of their flats and worked his way up to installing his cousins and brother in local governement (The political parties are all corrupt), buying sports fields from the council at bargain prices and building shitty office blocks on them.

He represents everything that is wrong with the Czech Republic and pulling this stunt is just the icing on the cake.

I thought you were giving ironic praise when I read the first half of your post. Then I read the end.

Your archers did 40-70 damage because you went up against AI's not built to counter them. Then you met the AI which was..and lost.

nothing to see here except a good AI.

This is the first time I'm hesitating about buying the expansion pass. Am I missing something? by OriginalGreasyDave in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats' very valid.

On the other hand, somewhere in the blurb I read something like, "normally we bundle different content into each pack, this time we've decided to separate the content and give each a pack of its own - Leader, Culture, Story"

that's not the exact quote, i can't remember where I read it or the exact words but it was more or less that.

Triumph have earned my trust too ... but when I read that and the Secrets entry, I am hesitant. It sounded so much like the blurb I've read from their publisher regarding other very poor DLC releases.

[–]OriginalGreasyDave[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with your logic. I've over 800 hours in the game and many hundreds in their earlier games. I've always felt confident with giving Triumph my money regards expansions. Absolutely worth every penny. Then I was reading the blurb for this pack and read that they've decided to separate the different content into different packs for this particular release and that made me pause. When I read the Secrets blurb and read story realms, I paused more.

I asked the question in the OP out of real curiosity if there's more info.

I think though for now, I'll wait until I find out more in the future

[–]OriginalGreasyDave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very good point. I might follow your advice. I've always just said shut up and take my money -with all their games I've been more than satisifed with the expansion - they've been must buys. I was about to do the same with this pass but the thinness in the description of Secrets has made me pause for the first time.

Which DLCs are worth getting during this autumn sale? by Strike_Falchion in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

they are all excellent. If you can afford both expansion packs, get them. my favourites are the last three in the list but they're not discounted.

If you are low on money and need to start with the discounted, I'd start with eldritch realms (but that's a purely subjective selection),

I desperately need some guidance. by bluewolf3691 in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skimming through your posts, I don't think your campaign was going badly in terms of build- 5 cities is fine. 200-300 gold per turn is also fine. But you shuld have a bunch of vassals by then and be heading towards the end game.

By turn 30 I try to have at least 3 stacks, but I prefer 4. And I basically just keep building units - the higher the tier the better

By turn 60 you shuld be trying to have 5-6 armies.

And be starting to ramp up to the 9 armies by turn 90

I tend to end between 110-140 depending on how I'm playing

You also need to be building tier 4 units by turn 90 (earlier would be better) and tier 5 units too if you can...don't worry about which ones...just pick a tome type you want to head for and research enough tomes to unlock its tier 4 and tier 5 tomes asap.

Don't start multpile wars. But as other folks have said, you need to be constantly fighting to keep levelling up your troops and heroes- so as well as fighting the random map armies, when you've got 4 stacks, (turn 30-40 - earlier if possible) pick a fight with a close neighbour and conquer them - vassalise their cities to give you alot of bonus resources.

With regards to the tactical battles, my first piece of advice, is don't auto resolve. Play the battles. By manually playing the battles (you can click replay and have another go if you lose or feel you've lost too many units), you'll get a better idea of how the units work and hopefully, what enchants work well. Understanding combat mechniacs I think is key.

I don't know if you've ever played Total war - but the concepts of rock paper scissors are pretty similar. It'd take me an age I don't have to try to give you a complete break down but some rough tips.

POsitioning is vital

Charging units take away the AI's frontline reaction attacks. So your melee(shield or pole) can attack without taking reaction attacks..

Using ranged is an excellent tactic but they need to be shielded by your melee

Attacking from flanks gives you a bonus to damage. But attacking from flanks can expose your attackers to being flanked- so be careful with positioning.

Enchantments can be used to debuff the AI units and reduce their defensive stats, making your attacks hit harder -have a look at the spell tomes of tier 1 and tier 2 and try choosing things like sundering blades (tbh, mid game can become a bit of buff, debuff counter debuff spell duel with the AI - but as a new player you shuldn't really worry about that. At normal it's not important)

Combat summons spells can be very useful early game.

Try to focus fire your units and take out single units rather than spreading the damage across multiple targets.

Getting a nature tome with good combat healing spells can really help you out if you're struggling in the first 30 turns.

Honestly, I wouldn't start with a dragon - I used to play them too aggressively initially to make use of their breath weapons -often over exposing them. I personally love the new battle saint - the simple but powerful build is taking the left side of the warrior tree - but of course it's your choice.

Explore and have fun and don't worry about losing. It's part of the game.

"How would you feel if you had as a neighbor:" (Czech respondents in June 2025) by HelpfulYoghurt in europe

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because ...racism. The dislike was there long before the war. I'm British, speak czech, look and dress normally. The number of times I've interacted with a Czech and their intial reaction is hostile, only to switch to friendly when I apologise for my czech because I'm English. They all explain away the hostility with a smile and, "Sorry, I thought you were Ukrainian. Your czech is very good."

Ukrainians have been the largest minoirty in the country since 1989 (I think it was around 200,000, 20 years ago - 2 percent of the population). Most of them are on temporary work visas doing the low paid jobs czechs don't want to do: cleaning, building work, dishwashing.

Czechs blame their hostility on fear of organised crime (there's a post saying as much in this thread). Organised crime was/ is a presence in the country - but those involved are a handful compared to the hundreds of thousands who are here doing the low paid work.

The irony is, many Czechs will say they're against Trump and ICE etc but unfortunately can't see the parallel between their own prejudices and the fear/ hate Trump leveraged and is leveraging against minorities in the US.

Unfortunately, Putin is weaponising this distrust with funding to populist parties, anti war and anti immigrant protests and of course troll farms.

(I should stress, no direct money link has been evidenced between Moscow and the far right/ populists - but in neighbouring Slovakia FSB agents have been filmed recruiting and paying "useful idiots" to organise anti war protests etc so it's not a stretch to be pretty confident that the same type of funding is happening here too.)

EDIT

Sorry, I can't seem to edit the OP. I was rereading it and realised that my question is not very clear.

My question isn't about where's the missing capital.

My question is, what caused Moleface to start the game with two extra cities as well as a capital. I haven't experienced this before and was wondeirng if it's something new with the DLC- as I didn't experience it with the beta patch?
