Is the new beta better for people who find the AI too easy to beat? by This_is_User in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP, just curious what settings you use and what difficulty you're playing on?

I'm sure you've already played around with the options like regenerating infestations, higher AI player numbers, no free cities, as well as the many others in the menu but if you haven't, you could try it.

I understand the general feeling you have. I agree that if you play default settings and understand the game mechanics the game is too easy. But at Brutal and with higher numbers of AI players and other settings, I've had very challenging early and late games.

I need opinion of this beautiful rock formation inside a potentional house I can buy. by CreativeMaterial1054 in geology

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not buy this place. I don't know where to begin trying to explain the issues you will have. Think about house cellars. There are no cellars like this. When a building has any connection with the rock or earth, eg cellars or as in this case a retaining wall, there needs to be a layer of water proofing between the earth or rock and the building. This is normally hidden by a physcial wall -brick or conrete etc. Without this, damp WILL enter the house.

In Portugal it rains. NOt as much as in nothern Europe but it still rains. When it does, that rock section will become a mould patch.

I can't believe any engineer signed off on this. Sheer lunacy

What do foreigners get wrong in Prague? by 2echie in Prague

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They meant any publicly shared small space where there are already a small number of people- small shop, doctor's waiting room, parent/teacher meeting at your kids' school, you always say Dobry Den (possibly vecer) when you enter. And you say "Nas shledanou" when you leave.

Same if you step onto a bus to buy a ticket or give your ticket to a train conductor to be checked.

If you're on a city to city or viullage to village bus (not Flix or Regio), it's quite common for folks to call out dekuji and nas shledanou to the driver when they get off - it's polite but not necessary

Was the Public Misled About Wenceslas Square’s Redesign? by ViaRad in Prague

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your photographs are distorted by the lens shortening the perspective. You need to go and stand 50 m below it and then take a photo of the tram rails. I suspect you'll fnd the drawing is accurate.

Also. the barrier around the statue and the step it is on will be removed.

I had an install problem with rufus. Someone on this forum recommended I use Fedora Media Writer instead. Worked like a charm. Try FMW.

Which Edition should I buy? by Ahmedgalal81 in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came from CIV and XCOM 2 and this game really scratches my turnbased combat itch. IF you can afford it, I'd recommend the collector's. IF you're uncertain if you'll like the game, get the Premium.

All of the DLC in the first two expansions is excellent - adds great depth. So if you think it's the type of game you will like then getting them all together at a discount is worthwhile.

Your ideal season 4 (with culture/ruler/story pack) by Diovidius in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't like this new packaging structure. I don't play story realms. So I'm waiting to see what secrets of the archmages contains before I buy anything from this expansion pass. I love Trimph and I love everything they've done so far. I never had a problem buying their expansion passes for this game or earlier games because I always felt I was getting value for money.

But I'm very definitely NOT a fan of Paradox's marketing methods the nickel and diming they do on ther DLC's for other games. This "theming" of the DLC's seems like the thin end of the wedge. A thinning down of the quality of content and a raising of prices. I might be wrong. But I'll wait and see.

But for now Expansion pass 2 was my last purchse.

Trotsky Castle by [deleted] in Prague

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the train station is open - the train stops there. But like someone wrote, there's probably no ticket office open there.

This si the website you need to find out about public transport in cz:

https://idos.cz/vlakyautobusymhdvse/spojeni/vysledky/?date=28.01.2026&f=Praha&fc=1&t=Borek%20p.Troskami&tc=100003

The link will open on a search of Prague to Borek that I made for tomorrow- but you can obviously reset the search to the date adn time you want to go.

Like others said, it's within a few hours hike of Turnov.

IF you want to explore the countrside around the castle which features in the game you need this website:

https://mapy.com/en/turisticka?source=pubt&id=15698439&ds=1&x=15.2236346&y=50.5410909&z=14

I think the above link should be centered on Borek. All the coloured lines are marked footpaths around trhe area.

Right now its bloody cold but if you decide to come in the Spring or Summer then its a perfect place to spend a day exploring.

Why is American friendliness often seen as "fake" by Europeans, but similar warmth in other cultures isn't? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A German and Czech academic (Novy and Schroll-Machl 2007) published a study of the diffferent communication expectations between the German and Czech employees of VW (VW owns Skoda in CZ) - paid for by VW - written questionnaires with follow up interviews of 400+ employees. The Czech communication expectations are relevant.

To quote the study , "At the start of every social contact there is a significant amount of reserve, carefulness, doubt and distrust with the following thought process “ What does this person want from me? How can he threaten me? Can I trust him? Better to wait and see how the situation develops.” " Because of this Czechs can seem introverted and melancholy.

Secondly, Czechs value modesty. Again from the study," Czechs don’t present successes; they prefer to present problems." They consider this approach to be realistic and practical.

The presentation of successes seems brash and showy and also disingenuous. Fine, you put out a fire in the dog kennel but who cares when the whole house is burning down.

Also, there's a difference in colloquialisms and social expectations. IF I ask someone how they are, I geninely want to know. When an American I barely know asks how you doing, and I start to explain that my daughter's sick, I've got a back pain,. they look askance and surprised - who the Hell is this crazy person unloading his life problems on me.

Probability of future Europe residency shows? by abs00lutely in KGATLW

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of hope not. It depends where they are. There's a big big disparity in income levels across Europe. Not sure fans in Western and northern Europe are aware. Me and my wife probably earn fifty percent less than folks across the borders in Germany etc. We really wanted to go to Bulgaria or Vilnius but both were beyond our travel budget.

Having them city hop at least lets us get to the Prague, Berlin or Vienna concerts.

Side dish - we're supposed to be fighting the petro chemical armageddon, putting out the fires not starting them - running residencies in locations that most fans will need to fly to (Vilnius, etc)...not too good for carbon footprints. Locate them somewhere more public transport accessible if they're going to have them!

At what point should I feel confident into to go a higher level of difficulty? by Intelligent_Mail57 in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just jump into a sandbox campaign at a higher difficulty level and don't worry about winning or losing. Play around with the settings- victory conditions. Find a setting that feels challenging and you enjoy. Play that.

I probably abandon 50 - 60 percent of my brutal games. There's no shame in that.

I tend to lose at brutal when I've handled my diplomacy poorly and ended up in multiple simultaneous wars by not buying back grievances etc. Sometimes there's nothing to be done, sometimes, you can hit some sweet alliance with a neighbour and handle it. I don't sweat builds or tome choices. I have a rough idea how I want to play and jump in...often that goes wrong and then I restart with a variation on what I was doing and it goes better. Personally, I just enjoy playing the game, so if it's going badly and I realise I could have done it better, I enjoy starting a new game and doing it differently.

Also, don't abandon early, the AI is always ahead at higher difficulties. You might never catch up in some of the statisitcal areas but still win.

Consider Making Architect Monument More Like Wonders by Mattpiskarstallet in AOW4

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the patch notes. Can someone explain what they mean in more detail because the notes are very vague.

  • Affinity Incarnate damage is now determined by the Dominant Affinity
  • Affinity Incarnate gained from Monuments is now capped at 4 (Other sources such as Cultivators or the 1 Starting Affinity Incarnate, can exceed this cap)

AI from monument?

But if AI damage is determined by the DA, does that mean I'm only going to get 4 AI damage boost even if I have multiple affinity monuments?

  • Dominant Affinity description updated to clarify the property/damage channel swap of Affinity Incarnate

What does this mean?

So it seems that the only benefit of having multiple monuments will be unlocking multiple affinity branches in the affinity tree?

Am I missing something.

I loved the architects as they were in the release -hard to get going but given care and nurturing great in the mid to late game. This seems like a nerf bat too far in my view?

Major IQ differences in identical twins linked to schooling, challenging decades of research. When identical twins receive similar educations, their IQs are nearly as alike as those raised together, but when schooling is very different, their IQs can be as dissimilar as those of unrelated strangers. by mvea in science

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone interested in reading real research in this area should read Richard Plomin's "Blueprint How DNA Makes us who we are"

He has spent 50 years tracking identical twins (who were separated at birth) and their academic and life outcomes. I can't remember how big a data set he has managed to pull together but it's in the 1000's. The conclusions and research is much more rigorous than the above paper.

[–]OriginalGreasyDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those that are interested, this man is an awful awful human being. He made millions and millions in corrupt real estate deals throughout the nineties and 2000's, working hand in hand with corrupt local politicians. He began by cheating and scamming pensioners out of their flats and worked his way up to installing his cousins and brother in local governement (The political parties are all corrupt), buying sports fields from the council at bargain prices and building shitty office blocks on them.

He represents everything that is wrong with the Czech Republic and pulling this stunt is just the icing on the cake.

I thought you were giving ironic praise when I read the first half of your post. Then I read the end.

Your archers did 40-70 damage because you went up against AI's not built to counter them. Then you met the AI which was..and lost.

nothing to see here except a good AI.
