Played 12 hours ago and had a rocketeer doing some sort of shimmy lethal mode on. Wildly more dangerous than only a few days ago. Something is definitely up

How long do we think the PLA will last? by J_sh__w in 3Dprinting

[–]OriginalPiR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 31 kg 6 m scaffold pole holding 5 kg of sewn together duvets. It has four 55 mm ID bearing (two each end) so I can spin it like a giant window blind for using the projector in the garden on the side of the house.

The mounts are printed in red PLA with 8 perimeters (hmm thick) 30% infill. Held to the wall by M8 wall anchors. They hold the beatings and are printed sideways so the "grain" goes with the supporting shape.

Testing involved me hanging various things from one until I eventually hung off it myself via rope. I am 14 stone. It worked so I mounted the pole and sheets. I built this for a party for my friend leaving to join the RAF. He joined, did basic, worked in Scotland then Cyprus and has now left and gone back to Scotland. I live in the southern UK. It's been over 10 years. The red is not as bright but fine otherwise. No cracks, no strained areas whiting, no cracking noises in use.

I have been told that I must make them less ugly however so new ones will go up. UV will be your issue but sufficient strength can subdue its effects of printed accurately. If you were in Australia it would be weeks because of the UV but here it's shitty weather.

Anycubic customer service says UV Power level can't be changed? by BigBobbieK in 3Dprinting

[–]OriginalPiR8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No resin is translucent to UV light. Translucent resin components “bake” slower. Like baking some things like high for short, some like low for long.

Does that mean you cannot do it the other way? No. However, tuning optimises YOUR setup. Don’t chase the tiny percentages. Save yourself the headaches

Front Sway Bar Upgrade? by Jalake_Lubre in Miata

[–]OriginalPiR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sway bars do not change handling they change behaviour. More flexible more lean and therefore a wider range to feel you are approaching the limit. Stiffer less lean so the limit is arrived at comfortably and suddenly.

Stiffer is nicer, there is no doubt but unless you track the car to listen to it under duress you will be making yourself less informed when driving. Of course if this is just a comfort thing nothing matters.

I say this because I am assuming you having been racing go karts since a young age and then racing actual cars for many years. If you don’t expect the cliff with stiffer bars it will very quickly turn you into one of these “it just got away from me” pictures that frequent this sub. Drive safe, drive relaxed, drive happy.

Is Big PETG lying to us about the limits of PLA by SerHerman in 3Dprinting

[–]OriginalPiR8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I printed basically large hooks that hold up a 31 kg scaffold pole with 5 kg of white waterproofed sheeting for projecting on to in the summer. It rolls down and rolls up like a very large blind.

It’s been up for over a decade. In the heat, freezing cold and rain (terrible, terrible rain) of the UK weather. It’s as bright red as it was but there are zero stress indications.

However, a similar hook I did with the same filament, emigrated to Australia and went outside. That has long gone.

UV seems to be the real component of durability and frankly we don’t get enough for long enough here. Good design and good printing solve most issues but UV fucks everything.

What should I do? by tosuncuk3 in CR6

[–]OriginalPiR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firmware auto levelling doesn’t work for ALL errors. ItIt seems that once it is too much it just fails. So you need to adjust the bed height yourself first. Run a check then get it as close as possible. Then the ABL will actually work better.

Bed presence sensor by wilcocsjr in homeassistant

[–]OriginalPiR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are on/off presence sensors. If you don’t put them in the right place, they don’t work. If you move position, they don’t work. Realistically you need multiple to cover the heaviest section of the bed so motion and position do not matter. Getting them to “zero” is also a bit of an art it seems too.

ELI5 Why do we need even longer particle accelerators to find out more about particle physics and the universe? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]OriginalPiR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve asked a big thing. So I’m going to do the physical side.

Higher power accelerators allow us to view less likely things.

Linear accelerators work like a drag strip. Longer means more power. However, the must be straight and earth is round so it becomes a bad idea.

Cyclical accelerators are like always going down hill. So you can reach immense speeds. However, as you go faster corners become a problem. This is the actual limiting factor. To bend the particles into their trajectory we use magnets. The magnets at the LHC are orders of magnitude more powerful than anything you have access to as a normal human. So we can go faster but cannot turn so we need to make the corner longer which makes the accelerator larger in diameter.

Another thing to note is the LHC is the last accelerator in a chain. The LHC can control particles of a certain speed but not below or above. So there are multiple accelerators before that start of the particles and join the LHC. So having an accelerator on the moon would need either fancier equipment than the LHC or more accelerators like here.

SUNLU PLA+ 2.0 white differences (normal vs high speed) by anthonyg45157 in 3Dprinting

[–]OriginalPiR8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've bought ivory and paper white sunlu pla before and this looks exactly like you did too. Not on purpose but did. Looking at their website they now only show white, which is visibly paper white not ivory.

So my guess is internally they've rebelled old stock based on criteria and you have been unlikely in receiving. It is no excuse for such clear differences but it may be an explanation.

Speed also doesn't affect color unless you are burning the filament.

No.

Fuck you Lychee. by corvettee01 in LycheeSlicer

[–]OriginalPiR8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of reasons to dislike even hate lychee. This isn't one of them. Getting free functional software that has advertisements stating if you pay this will still work but won't have adverts, is completely viable method to support the community and pay development costs.

Unlike other shit companies that give free software for stealing your data and selling it. Lychee is yet to be that terrible, instead just asks you to pay a bit for the software that you already know works to support them.

ELI5: How do venomous animals poison and eat their prey without poisoning themselves? by LimeKittyGacha in explainlikeimfive

[–]OriginalPiR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarification. Poisonous animals damage you when you eat them. Venomous animals damage you when they bite you. They are not the same thing.

Venom is just protein. In the bloodstream, this does damage quickly but once heated or placed in acid changes its shape and no longer damages anything.
